I am trying to use torify to scp a file, but I get an error
"Connection closed by 127.0.0.1"

(Action) thinking out loud, are there any irc proxies which would send your IRC connections through Tor
if not, would this be a useful service?
misc
i am sure irssi can do it
marlowe
misc: that's what I am thinking, use irssi as proxy for IRC connections which I wish to go through tor. This server would handle all my Tor connections.
fossiiil
arma: you're right...i don't know how long exactly, but it was 2-3 hours before new OR's data appeared on my machine with Tor client...
now our Tor network is having N+1 routers
;-)
marlowe
perfect, if I connect to an irssi-proxy running as usewithtor irssi all the connections through it will go out as tor connections
SwissTorExit
Happy Christamas to everyone :P

I'm trying to login to a server via SSH over Tor but after I enter the password it just gives an immediate error
Connection closed by 127.0.0.1
or Connection close by UNKOWN

SwissTorExit: hey. That message is actually nothing to worry about. It was relating to urras, a directory authority that hadn't upgraded. I suspect your node may have network issues?
SwissTorExit
hi Sebastian :P happy Xams
so strange that the bandwirch hace shutdown so much when it asked about it ... but thanks for your answer Sebastian
certainly other thing in same time :D
well all run well on my network but possible a little overload from my ISP
the both was on same time, that's why i asked :P
well i see that i have all flags for a relay, maybe i was less used a few moment
now are up and normal again
Sebastian
ok
great
SwissTorExit
it's just more instable yet but when you say that's is not related, i am happy :P
it is someone who have PM urras about the upgarde ?
Sebastian
urras has been upgraded
SwissTorExit
why it's always right now to say teh same error ?
Sebastian
what?
SwissTorExit
the 2 last warn are 30 min ago
and was the last days too
Sebastian
hrm
SwissTorExit
today i have 4 warn about it , 2 this morning and 2 30 min ago
Sebastian
hm yes
it appears that urras might still be running the old version
I've pinged the operator.
SwissTorExit
know you a bit about bsd ?
thanks Sebastian :P
i can't understand while the ntpd are always wrong
BSD can't give the true time , i will try to add npd, it's sure better as the original
i just found strange
7 min too late lol
Sebastian
mwenge: hey
mwenge: you're the TorK guy, right?
mwenge
sebastian: yup
Sebastian
ok, great. Just a quick question, for your controller, do you use or think about using the descriptions of config options that Tor returns when you query it for all available config options?
We're thinking about removing those descriptions from Tor, because no-one seems to use them, and they're outdated/partly wrong

mwenge
sebastian: the short answer is i don't query for available options :-)
Sebastian
ok
I thought so.
just trying to make sure we don't make any of our gui writers sad :)
mwenge
hehe
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: thanks for your report, it should be fixed for real this time
SwissTorExit
you are always welcome my friend :P
thanks to you to report again :D

Hi. I've just set up tor on my desktop and forwarded ORPort 9001. The log says: Self-testing indicates your ORPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent. Publishing server descriptor. But I cannot see any connections yet. Did I miss smth?
Sebastian
soa2ii: no. It takes a while for clients to notice you, about 2 hours after you've set it up, you should start seeing the first client connections.
soa2ii
Sebastian: Thanks. So I'll wait then.
Sebastian: Will it always take that long?
I mean I'm running TOR on my desktop which is normally shut down over night.
Sebastian
soa2ii: yes, it will unfortunately. To minimize overhead, Tor clients don't fetch the list of relays that often
soa2ii
Sebastian: So do I mainly help or confuse the TOR network with my "on-off-server"? :P
Sebastian
how long does it run? If it runs for 8 hours or more, you're helping.
soa2ii
Sebastian: Depends. Normally 8 hours i think
Sebastian
sounds good
Tor will automatically realize that your relay is one that goes down often, and your relay won't be used in circuits that usually require high uptime
soa2ii
Does TOR just initiate connections over the ORPort? I tried to set up QoS in my Router and backgrounded TCP Port 9001. If I monitor the traffic it seems not to be backgrounded & any ideas?
Sebastian
Tor will use other ports than the orport as the source port, of course
soa2ii
Sebastian: So can I somehow QoS TOR?
Sebastian
probably, I don't really work with qos, though
avar
I made a new munin plugin for Tor: http://munin.projects.linpro.no/wiki/plugin-tor_routers
http://noc.nix.is/nix.is/v.nix.is/tor_routers.html
murb
avar: neat
qbiort
avar: nice
Sebastian
avar: neat! If you want, it would be cool if you tracked individual flags as well, and also relay versions etc
avar: feel free to go wild :)
avar
Sebastian: What sort of flags?
I'm a tor noob :0
Sebastian
avar: the flags that the Tor directory authorities give out
see http://trunk.torstatus.kgprog.com/
Flags like stable, exit
avar
Sebastian: Can I get this information over the 9051 control port?
Sebastian
avar: I think so, you can get the entire consensus, right?
avar
consensus ? :)
Sebastian
do you know where your datadirectory is?
there is a file cached-consensus
Lunar^
avar: the consensus is all the routers in the tor network
Sebastian
avar: if you're serious about Tor hacking, you should read the specification
Lunar^
avar: at least all routers that the directory authorities agree on
avar
How do I access that file?
Lunar^
(hence the name)
avar
I'm not really serious, but I'll write a munin plugin for it if I can get that file :)
Lunar^
avar: /var/lib/tor on Debian systems
Sebastian
http://gitweb.torproject.org/tor/tor.git/tree/2ef988c0650989571a7da12494a8b66c398fb2c1:/doc/spec
avar
oh neat
B.t.w. it looks like my tor node dropped of the network yesterday with this in the log: Dec 25 15:37:32.389 [notice] Configured hibernation. This interval begins at 2009-12-01 12:00:00 and ends at 2010-01-01 12:00:00. We have no prior estimate for bandwidth, so we will start out awake and hibernate when we exhaust our quota.
I have this in my torrc:
AccountingStart month 1 12:00
AccountingMax 3 GB
But it can't have exceeded that at 100kB/s I think: http://noc.nix.is/nix.is/v.nix.is/index.html#tor
Or maybe it could have:)
Sebastian
you could have
100kB/s in both directions is ~700MB/hour
avar
ah:)
Yeah acc. to vnstat it could have reached that
This looks like what I'd get with GETINFO ns/all
Sebastian: http://noc.nix.is/nix.is/v.nix.is/tor_routers.html
just waiting for munin to update so I'll get some values there :)
Lunar^
I think some of those flags are mutually exclusives
Sebastian
avar: awesome!
