If I generate a new private key for a Tor hidden service on a server...
Then can I move that private key file over to an entirely different server and that is what constitutes the specific .onion address?
Sebastian_
yes
the private key is the only thing you need to back up to still be able to claim the same .onion address
nike
Is the best way to generate a new private key file to modify the torrc file and restart tor?
arma
nike: or you can delete the old one and restart tor with the same torrc
Sebastian_
if you move the old key away, a new one is auto-generated
arma
right
moriatest has moved up to the 19th fastest tor relay.
alas, it's testing the old version of the ewma patch. time to restart i guess.

MrDudle
so
how do i go about getting tor to run after installing it?
Am on fedora.
Runa
MrDudle: have you checked that it's not already running?
MrDudle
Well, when I turn the tor button for firefox on
I am unable to view any website so I can't use the check section of tor
Would Vidalia help?
Runa
you need to have vidalia too
MrDudle
ah
this would be one of the problem
installing as we spea
s/spea/speak
Runa, ok now I have vidalia running and am connected to the tor network
but when i turn the tor button in firefox to on
i get
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.
Runa
MrDudle: do you have privoxy or polipo?
MrDudle
(Action) checks
privoxy
fixed it i think
i went to preferences on the tor button
and unchecked the polip
s/polip/polipo
Runa
MrDudle: does vidalia say that you're connected?
MrDudle
yes
now the check page says i am too
:D
Runa
great :)
MrDudle
I had never been able to get tor going on linux before. (I've gotten a bit better with linux.)
Runa, I can exit the Vidalia program and tor will still run right?
Runa
MrDudle: you need vidalia too
MrDudle
i have vidalia
i'm asking if i have to leave the vidalia program open or can i exit that window
Runa
MrDudle: I'm sure you can exit the window as long as that doesn't exit the program
MrDudle
k
Runa, does tor regularly time out on pages?
Runa
MrDudle: tor is known to be a bit slow, so yes, that can happen
MrDudle
k
Runa
you can choose 'new identity' in vidalia, that might help
mistertorify
hi
is noscript and adblock plus safe with tor?
what about showip?
this is for firefox addons

xtoaster
hi. its ok to use adblock and noscript with tor.
mistertorify
okay cool
setting up a custom profile for firefox
xtoaster what about showip?
it lets you know the ip of the webpage
it is useful so you can see if it is really their ips
xtoaster
its ok. but not sure if it will always work.
mistertorify
also for other uses
xtoaster
since tor is slower than normal internet. if show ip cant put up with that latency :-) it may fail.
mistertorify
so it won't leak my identity?
xtoaster
no i dont think so.
but but it will tell you the exit ip :)
mistertorify
you mean the tor exit ip
hmm
well I noticed it showed the site address
which you can still use that to do a reserve look up
what about cookie addons like cs lite?
xtoaster
oh. right then you'd better no use it at all.
mistertorify
I like cs lite because it makes it easy to add to exceptions for cookies
so I can have it setup to not allow cookies
xtoaster
if that plug in show the site ip. its most likely that it does local dns lookup.
mistertorify
it doesn't show the ip
it shows the address like google.com
no ips
it suppose to show ips
xtoaster
ok then maybe you can have a look at the error console to see if there is a clue, why it doenst show ip :-)
mistertorify
how do I view the error console?
I am using ubuntu
xtoaster
ah i mean firefox error console
tool>error console
mistertorify
ah okay
I don't see any errors for showip xtoaster
it just shows up as www.google.com no ips
so does it sound safe?
xtoaster
well. not sure
mistertorify
it usually will show ips somewhere
for google.com
xtoaster
if i were you. i will always be careful with those dns connected stuff
mistertorify
well I have two profiles open for firefox and the one with torenabled shows ips
whoops
I mean the one that shows ips is the one with tordisabled
xtoaster
:-) i have never use this addon before. I dont have the say. feel free to try.
mistertorify
it shows +5 ips for google in tordisabled firefox
it shows www.google.com for torenabled firefox
addons for firefox tor enabled is "showip, cs lite, noscript, adblockplus"
hmm
maybe I should ask the author
of showip
well it also ha ubuntu firefox modifications for add-on also
but that just disables update for firefox and changes homepage to ubuntu's google page
what should I look for xtoaster would like a pastebin of firefox's error console?
xtoaster
? - pastbin of firefox's error console
mistertorify
you never used a pastebin before? xtoaster
it is what online people use for debugging code
but it is also used for sending large texts over irc without flooding the channel
well any protocol for chatting really
http://pastebin.ca/
I like to use that one
cause I like to view it in raw mode
from the site
well when I disable tor showip turns from the www.google.com to none
xtoaster you use ubuntu or some linux distro?
tr3nt_
hello.. if i choose to use my own fonts in firefox in advanced and unchech the box "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" - will this leak any information through tor? (Ubuntu)
mistertorify
hmm
are you wanting to use different fonts because of other language fonts not coming up? tr3nt_
tr3nt_
no..
mistertorify
hmm
tr3nt_
just want to change from serif to theminus
mistertorify
why do you want to use that feature?
tr3nt_
Terminus
because serif is a very ugly font
mistertorify
isee
I like readablefonts
serifs is readable to me so i don't care
well I mean there is some fonts hard on the eyes
well to me they are
I am not sure if that would leak info tr3nt_
well it doesn't need to contact the site again to change the font tr3nt_
it would probably just convert the font that got downloaded in the cache of firefox
but I am not 100% sure
that is what I would think would happen
torist
:)
xtoaster
oh hi. sorry i am not a native speaker :) so sometimes i have difficulty in understanding the sentence. hopefully it doesnt happen quite often.
torifythenet
how are you tr3nt_
what are you saying sorry to xtoaster?
xtoaster
its ok the modify the fonts. they will not affect language settings. the language code is passed in your user-agent
torifythenet
to the pastebin thing?
xtoaster
ah. yah.
tr3nt_
ok, thanks.
torifythenet
well it seems that sites don't always based if off of that info
like as you can see when you use google sometimes it will be in another language
I mean your browsers preferred language
hmm
xtoaster
hm that depends. some site determine your language by your ip, some by lang code in useragent, some by langcode in lang code header, some by javascript browser language property and some by os language property.
alot :-)
torifythenet
I see
hmm
well I know there is tons of ways they can do it
what about refcontrol xtoaster for firefox addon
it is like cs lite but for refer headers
http referer headers
xtoaster
uh, that could help you cover your track, by hiding the referer.
torifythenet
yeah
it is gpl
:)
well sometimes you have to use http referer headers for some sites for security like banking sites so I use that addon for such sites
cause it is a pain to have to do it through a window and copy and pasting all the info
xtoaster
normally disabling the cross-site referers is enough :)
torifythenet
how do you do that? xtoaster
xtoaster
just create a rule with block+3rdparty only :)
torifythenet
I see
that is an addon for firefox? xtoaster
xtoaster
? is it in refcontrol :)
and most likely its the default setting.
torifythenet
it blocks all by default
whoops
no it doesn't
but it is easy to configure
xtoaster
oh. than you need to modify that default. some site use referer to block links stealers
torifythenet
well I mean it doesn't block referer headers by default
you just have to change it to block
xtoaster
hm right :)
torifythenet
but then you can change referer headers for the sites you are at by clicking on it and select options it should popup a window that says the sites address at the top and options for the site below
« prev 1 2 next »
