or: mikeperry committed revision 21089 (/translation/trunk/projects/torbutton):
or: Add new strings to templates. Update translated strings from
or: template.
arma
mikeperry: shall i update on the pootle side?
mikeperry
yes please
arma
done, i think
how do you generate the po files? runa had suggested that i use pootle to do that after svn updating to the new pot file
but having it automated, or at least command-line, sure seems better.
cristi
hy, I have a small problem with starting tor, can anyone help me? this is the log http://www.pastebin.ca/1697418
mikeperry
arma: I have a script that runs some magic gettext commands to convert my english firefox string files into templates. I then have some more magic that updates all the translated .po files from the fresh template, and some more magic that converts those back into firefox string format
arma
cristi: what OS? how are you starting tor?
mikeperry
arma: this is documented in tor's doc/translations.txt, though I have some updates to that now that torbutton is in git
cristi
arma: ubuntu 9.10. with vidalia

arma
cristi: ps auxw|grep tor
cristi
arma: http://www.pastebin.ca/1697432
arma
there it is, pid 2246. tor is already running.
when you apt-get install tor it makes tor start automatically
cristi
k let me kill it
arma
/etc/init.d/tor stop
(maybe preceded with sudo if you aren't already sudoed)
cristi
arma: damn, you were right, and i checked for that but with ps -e
arma: how do i make it not start by default
arma
mikeperry: oh hey, nice file. we should put the gettor info there too.
cristi: the rude way is to go into /etc/rc3.d and rm the S20tor symlink
cristi: there's probably some "run level manager" program that puts a nice interface on that
keb
in ubuntu the nice way is to rename it S80tor
er i mean K80tor
theres a readme in /etc/rc3.d which explains it
or /etc/rc2.d
arma
true. moria's default runlevel is 2. if you have x it'll be 3.
cristi
keb: so i should rename what to what? S20tor to K80tor?
arma
surely there's a program that does this and doesn't require you to learn about inittab :)
cristi
i know about inittab a bit
arma
on red hat it was... chkconfig i think
cristi
makes sence to change the s
keb
maybe. you can check Applications, System, Services
but tor may not have been installed there
in the gui thing
phobos
debian/ubuntu has update-rc.d
the correct way to not make it start by default is to edit /etc/defaults/tor
not rm symlinks
;)
keb
but that wont let it start at all
cristi
nice
thanks phobos
arma
oh hey. debian has an /etc/default/tor too
did you mean /etc/defaults/ for ubuntu?
cristi
arma: i have default not defaults

keb
yeah me too
arma
sounds good. yeah, edit that.
phobos
ubuntu is 90% debian
cristi
so true
uhm it seems like it's not connecting though
phobos
ubuntu is basically debian with lots of non-free software thrown in by default
cristi
lthough i get in the log that tor has oppened a circuit
arma
or conversely, debian is 110% ubuntu ;)
cristi: so far so good. so tor is working, and vidalia is working. did you install polipo or privoxy? and torbutton?
cristi
arma: yes but vidalia says that tor remains in the connecting status
keb
the first step is opening a circuit. now you can try connecting
vidalia almost always does that for me. i jsut click the start button again and it goes away
i think vidalia isnt waiting long enough for Tor to start
cristi
idk, should i paste the logs?
nvm, here they are http://pastebin.ca/1697456
however i can't get a new id or smth
keb
is Vidalia showing a green onion?
cristi
no
yellow
and status is Connecting to Tor
keb
click the connect to tor button again, it should work this time
cristi
you mean stop and then start again
keb
nope, just start
it should connect to a running instance
arma
what country are you in?
cristi
romania
keb: i don't have a connect to tor button lol
arma
hm. tor should work there. so a) tor said it established a circuit, but b) vidalia's onion is yellow?
cristi
arma: yes for both
arma
is your clock wrong?
keb
yeah i usually click the Start button again
cristi
keb: i tried to stop and then start again but it's the same
keb
hmm
cristi
back
so, any ideas? could it be the firewall or smth?
keb
if Tor says it opened a circuit it probably is fine
arma
what version of vidalia?
cristi
0.1.13
arma
does your tor work? from firefox i mean.
cristi
with tor button no
oh
actually it does lol
arma
are you using privoxy or polipo? did you edit its config file?
cristi
plipo
yes
as it was said on the site
it works
keb
if http://check.torproject.org works in firefox then its just a vidalia issue
cristi
just vidalia doesn't work
arma
ok. so your tor is working. but you want your vidalia working too? one option is to try using a newer vidalia. yours is 6 months out of date.
cristi
i guess
so i'll replace that
phobos
i bet it's the latest in repos though
arma
another option is to use your tor and be happy. :)
cristi
now, how can i make other applications use tor also?
arma: haha nice one
arma
see the torifyhowto on the wiki (linked from the faq)
keb
phobos yep latest in repo is 0.1.13-3
arma
i don't think updating to 0.1.15 will do much for you.
cristi
arma: why is that
arma
i looked over the changelogs. nothing to indicate a problem like the one you have.
keb
(Action) keeps forgetting to report that issue
arma
keb: yes, you should. i never experience it. are you using trunk?
keb
i download the tarball
phobos
vidalia 0.2.6 should be stable
keb
doesnt look liek they use the bug tracker, there are bugs in 0.0.10 listed as new
phobos
who is "they"?
keb
whoever updates it
phobos
are you talking about vidalia, tor, distro repo?
keb
vidalia
phobos
there are lots of bugs in trac which are actually support requests
link?
keb
https://trac.vidalia-project.net/report/1
phobos
i can update vidalia trac i think
or feature requests which amount to "I wish vidalia included a pony"
arma
no pony
keb
:(
but we do have a bikeshed
phobos
what color shall we paint it? ;)
misc
the pony or the bikeshed ?
phobos
yes
for those who haven't seen, http://paranoia.dubfire.net/2009/12/8-million-reasons-for-real-surveillance.html
nsa
or: [wiki] keb updated TheOnionRouter/GoodBadISPs - http://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/GoodBadISPs
cristi
thanks for the help! bye bye
keb
it would be nice if the "[Notice] Your application (using socks5 to port 80) gave Tor a hostname, which means Tor will do the DNS resolve for you. This is good." mentioned which application did that
sahal
tor doesn't keep track of what applications are using it
misc
how can we find the information ?
sahal
most like from that port though, it's probably a web browser
keb
hey i didnt say it would be easy to do ;)
but it would help figure out which apps need to be tamed
er, torify'd
misc
this could be useful indeed
but it soud quite complex
keb
well netstat can see process ports and process ids
misc
yes, but is this portable across os ?
( well, the idea is, but i fear to hit subtle bugs everywhere :/ )
sve
hi i keep getting server connections from *.oftc.net all the time, why is this ?
why not just sign on to the irc and no other connections ?
phobos
what are the connections? and you should ask some oftc admin
nsa
or: keb committed revision 21090 (/website/trunk/en): fix vidalia source link
sve
ok, like charm.oftc, larich.oftc etc
azerour
hi everybody
keb
hi
azerour
I don't know if I'm at the right place but I want to know if somebody successfully use "tortunnel" ?
I can't go further than "Connecting to exit node: 174.143.240.157:443
keb
azerour
yes thats it
ShanePancake
So in a little bit I am going to try and right a simple python script to create a single fixed circuit in the Tor network, so I can test my modified bridge's bandwidth compared to normal Tor?
-?
does this seem like the correct way to go about this? I am going to use TorCtl probably
azerour
have u tried tortunnel ?
keb
compiling
azerour
meanwhile, do u know if there's a way to use tor with one single hop ?
keb
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#VariablePathLength
ach. it wants to use my SIP port.
azerour
wep and u can't configure another port except 5060
th eonly solution to test it is to turn of your sip soft
keb
nah, i'll just recompile it
azerour
the only solution without recompiling of course
keb
damn. it works
mine got to the next step SSL Connection to node complete. Setting up circuit. and then i could use it to browse with firefox
this is bad news for exit node ops
azerour
ok tkx for the feedback
keb
np
ShanePancake
azerour, sorry I have not
azerour
the tool was created to test bad end nodes that use sslstrip & co
ShanePancake, ok tkx
ShanePancake
azerour I want to be able to do that to for some testing. (Single hop, specified router)
sve
was just following the discussion, so i guess there is no way to use 1 or 2 hops ?
azerour
yes we can
not using tor directly but there is a tool that imitate tor protocol and jump to the exit nodes
the tool was created for good doing, and like every pentest tool u can use it in both sides (white/black)
ShanePancake
I need it inside of Tor azerour, I know you can build circuits using tor controller, just not sure how
azerour
inside is just not possible unless you'r good in soft dev a modify the code source (https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#VariablePathLength)
what u can do with tor controller is changing the circuit whenever u want and u don't have to wait the timeout
ShanePancake, did the tool work for u too ?
sve
azerour: do you have the tool ? can you tell me where i can get it ? i saw the link above and read the pros and cons, but am interesting in getting tool
azerour
sve
saw the link, thanks
azerour
sve, can u post a feedback after testing ?
sve
i am going to have to download and compile, but sure if i am able to use it, i will
for tor itself i just got the debian package
i'll look and see if there is a package for this
what distro are you using ?
ShanePancake
oh cool, moxie marlinspike wrote that program. I thought I recognized the website, but the layout changed. I wonder if it works with bridges... it would be perfect
azerour
it works for u ShanePancake ?
ShanePancake
haven't tried yet, I will in a bit, but on a local Tor node
azerour, you realize it needs to be an Exit node right?
azerour
of course
