kaner
arma: but thanks for reviewing commits. its always better if four eyes check things
arma
if it works, no need to change it
i just figured i've found enough typos on python code that nobody notices until it breaks on an edge case three months later
kaner
no, i changed it. this is just at the line break of 80 columns at we all know how much python like correct formatting -- so to avoid possible future bugs i mean
-1s/like/likes/
on a different note, split downloads are working
i used the 'rename ex_RENAME to exe' approach since sina seemed okay with it
arma
right. that seems more likely to work than .ex_
good thing we have actual users involved

kaner
all that is left to do is split up the strings in constants.py to smaller strings and add some hints about split downloads and get those translated
yup
nsa
or: runa committed revision 21275 (/translation/trunk/projects/website): even more po files
Runa
there, I'm done poking pootle for tonight
kaner
ok, testing the last ~200 lines of change on gettor2 seem ok. i'll install on gettor now
This
is there a way to send traffic from applications that dont have built-in proxy support through tor (windows)
darrob
This: you might find info on that in the wiki. assuming that it will be hard to do with windows maybe this helps, for example: https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TransparentProxy
This
darrob: apparently that guide only mentions linux/bsd :(
it seems theres many ways for those OS
not sure for windows exactly
sahal
This: http://www.freecap.ru/eng/?p=whatis -- there's no documentation on how to use it with tor though
This
hmm
sahal
This: it's one of the things for volunteers to do: https://www.torproject.org/volunteer.html.en
This: if you get it to work, you could write soemthing up
and help out others
This
yeah
maybe if i just put the proxy to 127.0.0.1:9050
not sure though
i'd like to figure that out definitely..
if i do ill let people know
sahal
good luck
post it on the wiki

Bugz
I've got Tor up and running fine on normal sites, but every .onion site I get gives me a privoxy error;
Privoxy was unable to socks4a-forward your request http://*******.onion through localhost: SOCKS request rejected or failed.
any ideas?
This
doesnt onion use dns, so you need sockv5?
not sure
i dont believe sockv4a support DNS
Bugz
I don't think it's a config issue, I'm using torbutton so it's pretty much all handed automatically
This
ah
i have a question for you, lol
Bugz
handled*
shoot
This
okay so how do i get tor to proxy applications traffic when the applications dont support proxies
on windows
ive heard of things like freecap and sockschain but is ther a way to get them to work with tor
sorry for your question i dont know the answer, thatwas my only guess :/
phobos
you could try torvm

Bugz
well, if it makes you feel any better, I have no idea the answer to yours lol
phobos
torproject.org/torvm
freecap should also work
Bugz
Pretty much any vm should work pretty easily
This
what do you mean vm/torvm?
and how do i configure freecap to work through tor
phobos
https://torproject.org/torvm
it's also possible the .onion site you're trying to reach isn't up
Bugz
A virtual machine, think of it like a computer within a computer. It has to have it's own network connection, in most cases it's tunneled through your NIC and then your standard internet connection, but you should be able to send it through tor
And you have the bonus of a vm being pretty easy to wipe clean
I checked a few different ones, but it's possible. Is there any onion site that has solid uptime to test with?
This
so am i supposed to install torvm on a virtual machine?
or on my host computer
and it just proxies all traffic throughtor automatically i guess?
phobos
yes
no
err
crossed answers
Bugz
lol
This
confused
phobos
torvm acts like a network card for tor
it redirects all traffic through tor
This
ok
phobos
it's rough, but it works
This
no matter what port, etc, just everything
any traffic
coool
and i install this on my physical machine then
phobos
we should rename it to something easier to understand
This
thats a good idea
phobos
like tornic or torvpn or something
it's still a work in progress, so we'd rather get it working than worry about the naming of it
This
right
thats pretty sweet though
im confused about the whole "user account' thing they mention
is that within the QEMU vm?
or do they modify your host computer's accounts
i havent used qemu so thats why am confused
i have vmware but its different
do i just need the network installer, I already have vidalia-privoxy-tor bundle installed
phobos
pretend you're installinga network card
using the bundle installer is easier
eut
anyone know if there is an effort to create a python/java based node that could be run on appspot?
just thought it would be interesting to take advantage of the free bandwidth
lokkju_wrk
eut, while there is an effort to create a pure java based tor client/server, I have my doubts about if it could be made to work within the security restraints in place
eut
lokkju_wrk, can you point me to the effort you are talking about? i've found onioncoffee and silvertunnel but they seem to be client only
assuming the implementation doesn't rely heavily on external libs it would probably not be too terribly difficult to run within the restrictions
ehh.. maybe not. cant originate network connections :/
arma
eut: we have somebody working on a tor client in java currently. once that's done, hidden services, relaying, etc could conceivably be next.

kenobi
evdns_server_request_format_response() with dnsname_to_labels() wrongly implements part of rfc1035 about logic for sets of TC bit.
" Messages carried by UDP are restricted to 512 bytes (not counting the IP or UDP headers). Longer messages are truncated and the TC bit is set in the header"
TC bits should be sets only if lenght of all message via UDP was more than 512 bytes. Not alone lables or names.
for now TC bit sets for wrongly lengthed labels, which stricly limits for 63, but those means transmited error not signaling truncate bit.
arma
do you have a patch? :)
(Action) will transcribe to the bug tracker for nickm to look at later
(does this affect anything in practice, or is it just a theoretical correctness issue?)
kenobi
I do not have patch, because it's should be designed for future tcp transport too, so it's slightly hard for patch by one line.
arma
patches can be 100 lines too
kenobi
It's can be exploit via exotic attack, if reverse lookup was controled by attacker and exit relay was too. And resolv.conf contained ISP's DNS.
arma
what would the attack achieve, in that case?
kenobi
ip address of ISP's DNS
arma
ok. i'll make it into a flyspray entry. anything else i should add, for somebody who looks at it later?
https://bugs.torproject.org/flyspray/index.php?do=details&id=1181
kenobi
possible some examples for fixes of it via netfilter or flushing of resolv.conf. I recall TorVM drops dns via tcp as example.
arma
i fear i know very little about dns implementations. so many ways to lose your anonymity. :(

or: runa committed revision 21276 (/translation/trunk/projects/website/es): spanish translations
or: runa committed revision 21277 (/translation/trunk/projects/website/ru): more translations
arma
runa: are these translations coming via pootle?
Runa
arma: no, just existing translations that I've converted
arma
ok
i'm looking forward to the day :)
Runa
yep, it's going to be a lot better when everyone is translating the website via pootle :)
I'll just start adding more languages and converting the existing translations (as well as email the translators and let them know what's happening)
arma
are these languages right now where people shouldn't be editing the wml?
if so, we should try to make that a lot clearer
or is the current plan just to fold in whatever changes they make into the po, for now, if they make any
Runa
it's not the end of the world if they do edit the wml, but I can't promise that I'll be able to convert that translation into a .po file
the polish and german translator have both receieved emails about the move to pootle, so :)
arma
ok. we'll see how that goes then. great.

Kfree
hello
arma
hey
Goldstein
anyone use adium with tor?
Runa
Goldstein: I found a post on a forum saying that adium doesn't have socks4/5 support.
Goldstein
good find
i think i might have gotten it to work briefly with http proxying set
Runa
hm.. some other people say that it does work
Goldstein
it gives multiple options
but most o fthe time, it says error conecting too much
but i dont think that's so
i think it is a proxy issue
You have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Wait ten minutes and try again. If you continue to try, you will need to wait even longer.
shahn
maybe it is working, after all, and your exit node is popular, so many people use it to try and log in
Goldstein
i thought the route changed every ten minutes
wow, just worked
so do peeps here use tor for their browser?
where does tor keep it's control password?
misc
in the configfile ?
Goldstein
where
misc
mhh, maybe I am wrong :/
i do not fin it
HashedControlPassword
Goldstein
ok, i only see a hashed control password
yep
misc
the password is not in clear text
Goldstein
so basically if vidalia crashes and you want to restart, you have to restart tor and break all your connections
misc
why ?
vidalia do not use the password, but a control socket
Goldstein
if it crashes, it needs the password to reestablish control
gouki
Tor mentioned on NCIS :)
G-Lo
gouki: wich episode?
misc
agthe one where they found a dead body at the beggining of the episode
gouki
G-Lo, Random on Purpose, S01 Episode 09. but it's NCIS LA.
G-Lo
thanks
gouki
np
The show got a fan just because of that :)
phobos
let me guess, tor was used by some criminal
gouki
phobos, hehe. "He used Onion Router to hide where he is posting from, but I'm pretty sure he is in LA".
Something along those lines.
