is there any numbers on how many relays there are in the tor pool? :)
videludisto
tor rules
why is it that I get permissions denied a bunch of times on this one site but it doesn't happen all the time but it seems if I use tor it works all the time with no errors
wonder why that is... hmmm
keb

Rss
I asked before but didn't really get an answer, can I implement the tor protocol myself, and self it as part of closed source products?
sell rather, not standalone but in products
keb
the protocol is not patented, so you should be able to do so
but you'll be missing half the trust value of the tor network, which is in open source and implementation according to best practices from research results
Rss
thanks, and not really, if anything i'll be introducing a lot more people to TOR
which = more possible donators and relays
keb
then good luck to you
they might come after you for trademark abuse if you keep calling it TOR

Rss
I doubt donators would approve of there money going towards a case they would obviously lose, is waste of time and money
plus I doubt tors devs have time for that
keb
well there is a legal faq page with hints on how to play nice
http://www.torproject.org/eff/tor-legal-faq.html.en
http://www.torproject.org/trademark-faq.html.en
it doesnt say anything about an independent implementation of the spec
in fact i think the developers encourage that
though usually not closed source ones
it is possible that EFF lawyers are consulted at a reduced rate by the Tor Project ;)
phobos
Rss: tor is 3-clause bsd licensed
sve
why does my pidgin keep connecting or getting certificate verification requests from many servers after i connect to the main tor irc ?
phobos
did you connect to oftc over ssl?
Rss
<phobos> Rss: tor is 3-clause bsd licensed
that bad or good

keb
depends on your purpose. read and decide http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#ModifiedBSD
Rss
my purpose is to make money, a lot of it
tors infrastructure is in place
has userbase
pipe
morn
I'm going to hold a small Tor tutorial tomorrow, I wonder if I'm correct if I say that the bottleneck in the tor network is the number of exit-nodes?
Rss
tor has a lot of bottlenecks
for instance it doesn't take advantage of the new tls handshake bypass for repeat connects
it forces everything in 512 byte packets which some applications neither need or want so that's a lot of possible wasted bandwidth
which effects bandwidth providers speed as the pipes are more consumed
pipe
Ok, but this tutorial is for end-users that can't possibly know about that
I suppose what I really want to know is how hard I should try to convince them to become exit-nodes
Or if it's enough if people become relays
Rss
hard as you like, but keep in mind exit nodes are the most at risk
pipe
Yeah
Rss
and people have been raided for being exit nodes
computers seized
not to mention exit nodes banned everywhere
pipe
Yup, know the last part from experience
This is for members of the pirate party in Sweden, who are generally informed about integrity and censorship issues
Rss
well users who use p2p and other hide bandwidth protocol is a big bottleneck
tor auto changes path every few minutes which is another, more handshakin
ssl is obviously expensive

or: bogdro committed revision 21058 (/website/trunk/pl): Mainetance/polish translation update.

Sebastian_
pipe: If you want, I'd love to take some time to discuss the talk with you.
pipe
Sebastian_: I'd like that too, unfortunately I don't have that much time left. I'm busy the next ~20 hours, but if you're available tomorrow at around this hour it would be possible
Sebastian_
I might. Just ping
pipe
sure
Sebastian_
next time you do a talk, don't hesitate to ask tor-assistants or in here, but maybe with a little more time until the talk happens :)
pipe
yeah :)
On tuesday, the swedish government/military is starting up their new nationwide internet monitoring project
So on monday, one day before, we're teaching everyone interested about gpg, tor and i2p
mostly going to cover practical issues, what each software protects from and what it *doesn't* protect from, how to install it on various platforms and how to make sure that you're actually using it
Sebastian_
nice
How much time do you have for Tor?
merlijn
pipe: happen to have a link to what this monitoring project is all about?
pipe
I'm not sure if there are any good sources, but google for "FRA" and "sweden" :)
Sebastian_: Maybe an hour, but that includes time for helping everyone installing and playing with it
Sebastian_: nofra.se, google translate it ;)
Sorry for short answers, but I'm making food and should leave in 15 minutes
Sebastian_
pipe: no worries
an hour should be ok
merlijn
FRA is a law, which is bad enough - but I haven't read anything that will start monitoring all the traffic soon
Sebastian_
For windows users, the Tor Browser Bundle should just work
pipe: I'd recommend not focusing on setting up a relay yourself. That requires a bit more effort, and should only be done by people who actually care. Telling them that there are many ways to help out, and where to learn more, should be sufficient for your case
pipe
Sebastian_: Yeah, I'm just going to tell them that the possibility exist, that it's very helpful if they do, and that they can check out the website for all information
Sebastian_
I hear we have an IRC channel where helpful people might be around occasionally ;)
Rss
does tor block anything but 127.0.0.1?
Sebastian_
Rss: "block"?
Rss
my question is obviously too advanced for your feeble minds, i'll find help elsewere
pipe
Cool d00d
Sebastian_
we occasionally have unhelpful people in here, too. Or plain incompetent, like myself.
;)
pipe
well duh
it's irc
50% asperger syndrome etc
misc
well, i think rss was here to troll, but that's just me, i guess
udo
hello
I have a problem, can I ask here?
ever since upgrading to Fedora 12 I get circuit_testing_failed(): Our testing circuit (to see if your ORPort is reachable) has failed. I'll try again later.
but there is communication with the network and I am using a tor version that did work before
(just rebuilt for the newer openssl)
what should I check in the debug log?
Azeotrope
Does anyone knows why TorK closes unexpedlty when I click "Be from..." button? It happens on multiple linux distros.
darrob
i don't, but it sure sounds like a bug to me.
Azeotrope
Yes, but i don't know why. On slax there are prebuilt modules that aren't updated. AFAIK i used the module a while ago
and it worked just fine.
Sebastian_
udo: hey
udo: that sounds like a firewall issue
udo
Sebastian_, firewall is OK
9001 is reachanble from outside
Sebastian_
udo: can you give me IP and port, so I can check?
udo
I verified that with telnet
pindarots.xs4all.nl 9001
[info] connection_tls_continue_handshake(): tls error [misc error]. breaking connection. ?
Sebastian_
heh.
openssl version
what does that give you?
udo
OpenSSL 1.0.0-fips-beta4 10 Nov 2009
Fedora 12 standard
that is the only major change
kernel is same (didn't even boot yet)
Sebastian_
can you provide a full log from starting up until you see that warning?
udo
I guess so...
(lemme see)
Sebastian_
also, which Tor version?
Tors older than 0.2.1.21 (not yet released) / 0.2.2.6 don't work with the latest openssl version. Not sure about that beta version at all
udo
0.2.1.20
also tried with 0.2.2.6
(because of AccelName keyword)
Sebastian_
ok. Might be some new incompatibility with that beta version stuff. Or something else, without a full log this will be just guessing
udo
log is in progress
Sebastian_
great
udo
enabled debug, SIGHUP tor
Sebastian_
hrm, with full log I meant loglevel notice
but without omitting messages
sorry for the confusion
Colin2
why is my tor server http://tinyurl.com/yzkzs8v getting less than 10 connections per hour?
udo
http://pastebin.com/df59f8c0
sorry, it is at debug now
http://pastebin.com/ddeb9adc
without the debug lines
3 sites without nicknames, is that normal?
Sebastian_
can you restart your Tor? Not just hup it?
udo
sure. same logging?
Sebastian_
info or notice
debug will be very verbose
and I don't understand what you mean with sites without nicknames
udo
[debug] connection_read_to_buf(): tls error [misc error]. breaking (nickname not set, address
address omitted by me
Sebastian_
Colin2: hrm. Your relay has relatively low bandwidth, and hasn't been running for a long time. It should pick up some traffic after a few hours
udo
http://pastebin.com/d4b15cf68
Sebastian_
udo: hm. While looking at this more closely, this might be a new problem with that new openssl version
udo: please file a bug at https://bugs.torproject.org
udo
OK
so it is not me or my setup, just openssl
can you say what goes wrong?
Sebastian_
please mention any changes to the default torrc
udo
ok
Sebastian_
no, I can't sorry. I don't have much experience with openssl
udo
http://pastebin.com/d207e0dfb
not so much I think
besides the obvious higherup in the file
should I file a bug somewhere for this issue?
ah I see
davi
I am trying to connect to FreeNode via Tor, and now I am getting:
* *** Disconnecting you (syn (Facility Blocked))
What do you think about? Maybe I just need to complete the GPG signing service?
udo
https://bugs.torproject.org/flyspray/index.php?do=details&id=1158
enough details?
davi
reading
Oops, not for me
darrob
davi: Tor is blocked more often than not by Freenode. the GPG thing is pretty much obligatory if you want to connect to it regularly.
davi
thanks darrob. I and created a ticket providing them my IP, nicks, encrypted password, all in a gpg signed email with the pub gpg key included. I hope they reply soon
s/and/have/
darrob
don't get your hopes up. it seems to take weeks usually. if something happens at all that is.
Sebastian_
udo: please add your changes to torrc, and the tls errors
udo
I added a debug log
Sebastian_
ah I see
any torrc changes?
udo
added
this might impact the tor network quite a bit if it is openssl related
phobos
unsure this is ssl
since you can successfully make or connections to other servers
you seem to have a lot of config errors
udo
see the config
brb
phobos
if you unset HardwareAccel does it work?
udo
back...
phobos, what is wrong in my torrc, concluding from the logs?
CircuitBuildTimeBin is not in my torrc
at /etc/tor/torrc
or didn't you mean `config_assign_line(): Found unrecognized option 'CircuitBuildTimeBin'; saving it.` ?
phobos
if you unset HardwareAccel does it work?
udo
can try
tor restarted
phobos, no change with HardwareAccel hashed out
hmmz. it's talking OK: We have 1784 live routers and 0 old router descriptors.
but no real traffic yet
keb
you wont get much traffic with bandwidthrate 20KB anyway. try setting bandwidthburst 30KB or higher too
udo
http://pindarots.xs4all.nl/mrtg/tor.html
plenty of traffic
until fedora 12 came.
uSuRa
udo: how do you get those stats ?
udo
mrtg
uSuRa
udo: I figured that ..
