sry for the broadcasting. if someone publish the tut it would be n1. thanks again for ur help. gn8
arma
"n1"?
Sebastian
short for nice, I think
arma
in what language does 1 rhyme with ice?
merlijn
it translates to "nice one" for gamers, but it makes no sense in that context
arma
still, it's the best guess so far. thanks. :)
phobos
that's not much of a tutorial, basic security practice
i think the apache manual says to do the same
MarkUdy
if i wanted a way to do dns lookups through tor...where should i look? as in, all dns lookups come from tor
keb
use DNSPort option in torrc and set nameserver 127.0.0.1 in your system

arma
but note that tor is not a full dns server. it only knows how to answer a small subset of the overall dns protocol.
keb
sorry arma i was afk in the shower
re:wiki
MarkUdy
wow thx
i cant find documentation on DNSPort
dr|z3d
Add the line "DNSPort 53" minus quotes to your torrc.
MarkUdy
k
ah its in man tor
is torify just tsocks renamed?
Sebastian
no
it's a wrapper script around either tsocks or torsocks
torsocks is the recommended choice
but you need either
arma
markudy: it used to be "tsocks with a config file that pointed it to tor"
now it's that or torsocks, depending on which you've got
MarkUdy
ah cuz i installed tsocks and pointed it to tsocks-tor or whatever...is torsocks a seperate download?
my damn tsocks build was leaking dns apparently
ewww torsocks is hosted on google
(Action) shudders
are there any activities that can get you banned from tor?
arma
there are some activities that make you a horrible human being. and some that ruin the tor network for others.
(they overlap)
MarkUdy
ah
dr|z3d
In other words, Tor itself has no capacity for blacklisting clients. We prefer you don't push your p2p traffic over Tor. :)
MarkUdy
i dont do that crap
anything worth having is free imo
dr|z3d
And indeed use Tor in the way it was intended; not to circumvent "universal" laws.
MarkUdy
so what distros are the favorites around here
i use tor for privacy, but also to annoy at&t datamining
Sebastian
MarkUdy: we try to keep #tor to be ontopic. Come join us in #nottor :)
dr|z3d
Debian if flavor of the month. And #nottor for more conversational engagement, indeed. :)

arma
woo. now that i've not been travelling for a while, i can finally answer some mail. including trying to make or-talk a useful list again.
panama
hi
i can't work out how to get irssi to connect to hidden services using socat
can anyone help?
i'm on ubuntu karmic, if that helps
phobos
tried https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO/IrcSilc#Irssi ?
arma
the way i do hidden services with my irc is to set a mapaddress in my torrc. i map 10.0.0.10 to the .onion address, and then just connect to 10.0.0.10 in my irc client.

phobos
or that
panama
i hadn't tried using screen yet
dr|z3d
Check the wiki, it's quite helpful, panama.
panama
sorry, i'm a bit new :P
i don't know what i should do with the 'one liner' here: https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO/IrcSilc#Irssi
thanks, i've been looking at that wiki page for a while but no luck
arma, how would i do that?
nsa
or: ioerror committed revision 21021 (/projects/gettor/lib/gettor): Update the lang codes to match what we'd like to see internally.
panama
wait, the one liner goes in my torrc, right? sorry, i'm not lazy, just lost
agh. ok, arma, i tried your thing - put the mapaddress line in my torrc, then opened up torified irssi and typed /connect 10.0.0.10
and it says "SOCKS V4 connect rejected:"
help?
Sebastian
ShanePancake: ah, you're back. I'll be alive for 9 more minutes or so
ShanePancake
:)
I am not sure how to use conn/access
Sebastian
there should be no need for you to use jtorctl directly
puppetor should expose a newnym method now
ShanePancake
oh ok
gotcha :)
Sebastian
just have to deploy the new jtorctl with the new puppetor, else sadness
ShanePancake
I have them both, and things work, just trying to figure out how to use the newnym method with what I'm doing :)
Sebastian
well, you should have some test
and you'll have some ProxyNode instance
ShanePancake
what did you call the newnym method?
Sebastian
just call proxy.newnym()
ShanePancake
hmm not there
Sebastian
woot
sure you have the right branch?
ShanePancake
let me check
I think I just cloned it.. whoops
Sebastian
heh
git checkout shanepancake or whatever I named it
ShanePancake
hmm I started over. git clone url. get checkout shanepancake
when I try to check out "git checkout shanepancake" it's saying not matching any files known to git
Sebastian
pff, it's lying to you.
git remote -v?
(What I meant: what is the ouput of "git remote -v")
ShanePancake
origin git://git.torproject.org/~sebastian/git/puppetor
same thing happens with jtorctl
sve
is there a good website or link giving instructions on how to install tor as a relay on linux / debian ?
ShanePancake
that's pretty easy sve
Sebastian
ShanePancake: oh, you have no git experience? Sorry. I didn't give you the entire command
ShanePancake
you just need to look at torrc file in /etc/tor/
Sebastian
git checkout -b <coolbranchname> origin/shanepancake
ShanePancake
Sebastian I only know how to clone :X
phobos
sve: https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-relay.html.en
ShanePancake
that worked perfect Sebastian
Sebastian
ok
ShanePancake: happy to teach you more about git in #nottor when it isn't 3:15 am
ShanePancake
Sebastian: got it working some build errors
haha, thanks
Sebastian
heh. I wonder who wrote that sh*t.
can you fix them? I have no actual Java stuff installed here
ShanePancake
ahh unhandled IOException :)
well I can throw IOException I Think for that :)
the other one I'm not sure
Sebastian
what is it?
ShanePancake
"throw ex;"
unhandled puppetor exception
throws PuppetorEx..?
seems to do the trick
Sebastian
file and line would help
ShanePancake
ProxyNodeImpl.java:741
I just made them both throws those exceptions like the methods around them do
sve
phobos, that talks about using vidalia is there one that doesn't require vidalia ?
Sebastian
yeah, just catch them and do nothing or whatever. I'll fix it properly
ShanePancake
ok
the other one was at
Sebastian
they shouldn't happen anyways
it's ok, I have it
the diff is pretty short
ShanePancake
TorControlConnection.java:642
Sebastian
ah lol
heh
I had already fixed that one
but haven't pushed
ShanePancake
gotcha
Sebastian
"git fetch origin"
ShanePancake
mk
Sebastian
"git merge origin/shanepancake"
(both inside your jtorctl repo)
except not yet
now
ShanePancake
alright thanks
phobos
sve: at the bottom it includes cli directions
ShanePancake
I'll ping you how well it works so you can see in the morning if you'd like
Sebastian
sounds good
it might not work at all :)
ShanePancake
I am going to be gone for a week starting tomorrow, just fyi
haha we'll see :)
Sebastian
(if it doesn't, send a patch that fixes it :P)
ShanePancake
haha ok
Sebastian
enjoy your time off.
ShanePancake
:) sadly I will be writing on my thesis, not so much enjoyment
MarkUdy
lol NCIS just said onion routers
arma
fame, fortune!
well, fame. well, not even that, really.
MarkUdy
A TOOL OF TERRORISTS! AHHHH
arma
really?
MarkUdy
well a serial killer
meh too bad the nsa owns all the exit nodes, eh?
keb
they dont own mine. they may pwn it but i wouldnt be aware of that anyway
MarkUdy
lol
i dont run an exit node because i don't want to be called a pedo
keb
the trick is not to use that node for your own browsing
then you can be at "arms length" in a way
phobos
funny, I run an exit node so I won't be called anything
MarkUdy
i dunno i've heard stories about people running exit nodes being investigated for cp and then they can never shake that even if they are acquited
keb
are these stories widespread among your friends or do you have a specific reference
MarkUdy
i have no friends!
phobos
some countries have a fetish with child porn
MarkUdy
let me check my archive tho
phobos
where everyone is a pornogrpher until proven innocent
MarkUdy
well its like if you are publically investigated for drug distribution and you are found innocent, everyone still remembers you for that
keb
the law and police practice are quite different depending on the country
and even within that depending on how much education about tor has taken place
MarkUdy
yeah i dont have any specific case...i just thought it was common knowledge about tor exit nodes....maybe thats the fear mongering to stop people from running tor
every catholic church runs tor!
keb
where did you acquire this common knowledge from
MarkUdy
the interwebs circa 2007 who knows, i always fail to save the things i need to recall
keb
in that case will be good for your spirit to read up on current cases and best practices for running a node
http://www.torproject.org/faq-abuse.html.en#TypicalAbuses
http://www.torproject.org/eff/tor-legal-faq.html.en
MarkUdy
k thx
keb
MarkUdy
how does tor cope with people shutting down their nodes...like to play games and such....
i always shut down tor to play games online
keb
the network adjusts... your node will get less traffic for a while and not be listed as stable, depending on how often you do that
if you know how much bandwidth your game needs, you can use QoS in your router (if you have one) to prioritize or reserve bandwidth. you can also limit tor's use of bandwidth of course
using entries in torrc
MarkUdy
mostly latency
my isp is crap
StrangeCharm
should danish exits which don't either block the pirate bay in their exit policy, or use a custom dns server (and so advertise that they can reach tpb, but can't) bet the bad exit flag?
ShanePancake
I thought tpb was gone
oh I guess not.
MarkUdy
i heard they say to use opends
opendns or opennic to still get to it
StrangeCharm
the tracker was turned off, but the website is still there
keb
why would they block tpb, it is "legal" now
StrangeCharm
apparently, there's a court order
i just went tried to browse ti via tor, and was given a landing page saying that the isp was obliged to block tpb from their dns by a court order
keb
you wont get a "bad exit" flag for putting tpb ip address in your exit policy
StrangeCharm
should you get a bad exit flag if you can't reach tpb, but you don't advertise that?
that is, you advertise that you can reach it, but you can't
keb
"BadExit" if the router is believed to be useless as an exit node (because its ISP censors it, because it is behind a restrictive proxy, or for some similar reason).
https://git.torproject.org/checkout/tor/master/doc/spec/dir-spec.txt
StrangeCharm
so, would that qualify as isp censorship?
keb
MarkUdy we dont recommend using opendns because they dont fail when a name doesnt exist but rather they advertise to the user
in other words they hijack dns
dunno about opennic
StrangeCharm
well, you can always use the dns root servers
