Hullo.
Is the guy hacking on TorK around?
arma
you're looking for mwenge.
silver_hook
arma: Found him, thanks
Chad
is dr|z3d here?
I just wanted to know what the name of that Firefox addon was that helped with ssl certificates
its not on the addons site for firefox
phobos
it used to be petname
keb
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~perspectives/firefox.html
but not maintained
petname is here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/957
Chad
phobos, keb: it is supposed to help with certificates that firefox deems "invalid" but which are actually good.
this seems to be at least very similar to what I was looking for
keb
actually good in what sense
Chad
in the sense that they are valid
or are probably genuine

nsa
or: phobos committed revision 20991 (/projects/todo): exposing our operational underbelly a little bit at a time.
phobos
isn't that what oscp is for?
keb
you mean correct ip address, correct domain name, correct owner, correct time/date. but self-signed or not recognized cert authority
Chad
what is oscp
phobos
this is mostly #not-tor
in fact, all #not-tor
keb
*#nottor
dr|z3d
Actually, it's more #firefox on mozilla's server, but still. *chuckle*
Chad
dr|z3d: hello. I was in here about a month ago or longer and you recommended an addon for ssl certificates to check whether they were valid or not. Do you remember the name?
keb
wtf
this is still a #nottor topic
parkerfan88
hey guys.. someone wanna help out a newb? not sure how to use Tor
dr|z3d
parkerfan88: Have you visited the site and wiki pages linked in the channel topic?
parkerfan88
negative, will do that
don't you hate people that don't read the title ;)
dr|z3d
(Action) smiles.
gom
he;;p
hello
:P
I am new here
How are you all?
dr|z3d
gom: Do you have a Tor issue you can help with, perchance?
s/you/we
gom: Please /join #nottor
Conversational chat we don't "do" here. Sorry. :)
gom
I do not undertand
I do not have issue
if this a chat chaannel
oh I am sorry
I am sorry sir
thanks
parkerfan88
... don't be sorry lol
not that sorry at least
so.. what type of 'account' should i set up? i want to be able to send and receive videos/games
if it's an irc account you can only send like small files and pictures and stuff right?
keb
parkerfan88 tor is not about torrents or about exchanging files
dr|z3d
parkerfan88: Please, #nottor. Not here.
And, you want I2P, not Tor if you're looking to "swap files". :)

Don't rush!
phobos
these blog comments just get more angry/trollish over time
keb
that means there are more people reading it :)
phobos
and spammers
i just cleaned out 67 spam posts
keb
i think i will add a polipo/privoxy/null faq
gj038
hi. is there a way to specify a different datadir than ~/.tor
dr|z3d?
dr|z3d
gj038: Check your torrc.
(or use Vidalia).
gj038
cant use vidalia. have to do it with the torrc
nsa
or: [wiki] keb updated TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ - http://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ
keb
hmm is it expected to credit people for text lifted off their blog? 8)
this seems to need updating https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO/WebBrowsers
especially re: firefox and chrome
and to encourage people to test/develop the new torbrowsers
Premium
does tor return its new ip when you change its exit node
via
signal NEWNYM
actually I see the getinfo cmd
but the documentation is so confusing, seems like someone who native language isn't english wrote it
arma
premium: what do you mean "return its new ip"?
i assume you mean the ip address of the exit relay. but there are many other ip addresses that it "has" also.
Premium
I want to use GETINFO with the address param
arma
ah. to learn what ip address tor thinks it's running at?
Premium
how do I do this, cause "GETINFO" 1*(SP keyword) CRLF is confsing
yeah
arma
you are confusing the relay functionality with the client functionality. perhaps.
Premium
is it just GETINFO address crlf?
arma
yes
in this case
as for the parts that are confusing you,
you might find section 2.1 of control-spec.txt useful. it tells you which RFCs to look at.
i guess you are mistaking back english with precision. :)
erm. bad english, that is.
Premium
well it's just the wording thats confusing like GETINFO" 1*(SP
like wth is that
arma
yes. that "wording" is being exact. see the rfc.
think of it like a programming language, if that helps.
or think of it like math, if that helps.
or like perl, if that helps. :)
Premium
that returned my external ip
I was hoping for my external exit node ip
arma
you are confusing the relay functionality with the client functionality.
Premium
well the client chooses the relay path
so it can control it to give the external ip?
arma
there isn't quite such a thing as your external exit node ip. tor opens several circuits preemptively, and which one it chooses depends on properties of the request it's seeing.
what are you actually trying to do?
Premium
just get my current exit node ip without having to visit a site that gives it
which from what you're saying is what i'm gonna have to do
arma
that is one simple way to do it.
Premium
tor should really have that built in
arma
do you want to do this in some automated way? you are still describing a step in some bigger picture
and you haven't told us the bigger picture
Premium
if the client chooses the path then it knows what the end of that path is
i'm writing this in a program, lets you change tors exit node
now I wanna see what the current one is
mini controller
arma
getinfo circuit-status
those are the circuits that are around right now. tor will pick one when a new request comes in.
which one it picks depends on the request.
Premium
bunch of gibberish in hex
arma
do you know what an rfc is?
Premium
ok so external site visit'n it is, thanks for info
yup
keb
https://git.torproject.org/checkout/tor/master/doc/spec/control-spec.txt
arma
another wrinkle here is that by using the circuit you start the timer on its demise
which may not be what you mean to do.
Premium
where you think I was posting you the command from :P
keb
lol
the rfc documents can all be found at http://www.ietf.org/rfc.html
Premium
unfortunately it seems all exit nodes I get are german
guess germans took over
arma
did you want to pick an exit relay from another country? if so, you might like the 'exitnodes' config option.
the controller protocol is meant for people who consider precision in language good, not bad. :)
Premium
yeah that'd be nice, I might make my own controller, to replace vidilia
to do this stuff alot easier, as i'd imagine theres some people that like editing config files about as much as me, which is not at all
arma
makes sense. you can setconf the exitnodes config option, too.
nickm
(Action) enthusiastically awaits increased diversity in the set controller offerings.
arma
(if you do that, and that's what you wanted to do, then you never have to learn what tor's current "address" is)
Premium
well I want to make sure entry and exit nodes have different countries, if thats not already, and I have some other ideas in mind
basically make it all real easy for the user, i'm hoping tor's not limited itself, in thing I wanna do
cause i'm not allowed to release my own version of tor am I?
seeess
sure you are, you just have to follow the license
arma
actually, you are. it's free software. but you shouldn't call the thing that you release tor, since that would confuse people.
Premium
for instance having a filter at tors entry to filter out the users real ip would be nice, assuming they werent using end to end encryption
that's fine, my plans aren't to touch the tor's source right now, just make a controller
arma
what do you mean by a filter? and what do you mean by tors entry?
Premium
I mean the fake socks4/socks4a/socks5 server is acts as, filter any traffic that contains the users ip before its sent through tors network
for instance I think irc clients can connect externally and attempt to send your real ip on request even if you were using tor, not sure though
arma
hm. isn't that best done in the applications? there's a lot more sensitive info out there than your ip address. (have you looked at torbutton's design doc?)
Premium
yeah torbutton is nice, but onlyworks for browsers, but most other applications aren't really built for anonymity so they may send your ip anyway
arma
what if they send your username? or your real name? or your 2008 tax receipt that it found on your hard drive?
Premium
unlikely, depending on the programs purpose, theres a great deal who sending your ip when requested as it's part of there protocol
and ip is what the users trying to protect, the content is another issue
arma
if you find an irc client that does this, i bet a lot of people would be interested to learn that
Premium
mirc does actually
under local info it asks how to retrieve your ip and host, via asking the server or standard method, which i'm guessing is an external source
not being the irc server
arma
and it bypasses its proxy settings to do this?
Premium
idk I just tested older version, it gives me back a local 192.* ip when using local method connecting to the irc server using tor as my proxy
who knows on other machines
actually the method is called normal
not local

"memset(circ, 0xAA, memlen)" and "memset(conn, 0xAA, memlen)" theoretically incorrect. It should be "memset (mem, 0xAA, memlen)" instead.
acorn
I'm having a problem with the Tor IM Browser Bundle. When it tries to start firefox it says that a firefox process is already running and that I should try to close it or restart my computer. There is no firefox process in the task manager and restarting does help. I can start normal firefox fine.
*restarting does not help
dr|z3d
acorn: Locate your firefox profile, check for the presence of parent.lock therein, delete, start Firefox.
*your tbb firefox profile.
acorn
should I be trying to find the profile of the portable firefox? I don't see anything named parent.lock
dr|z3d
Yes. You need to locate your tbb profile dir. If it doesn't contain parent.lock, then something else is amiss.
acorn
I tried completely deleting tor browser and re-extracting it, restarting my computer.. no luck
dr|z3d
Can you launch tbb's firefox in safemode?
acorn
not sure how I'd do that
dr|z3d
Find the exe for tbb's firefox exe, create a shortcut link, and append -safe-mode to it.
"path_to_exe" -safe-mode
acorn
can't run it on its own, says firefox.exe cannot be found
oh sorry
tbb firefox
i'll try that
dfi
are there any statistics about the traffic that passes through the tor network? i wonder how much http-get traffic of actual web-sites (html/php + some images) actually passes through
and how much noise from filesharers, bigger downloads like warez etc
dr|z3d
dfi: There's no way to determine what passes through Tor, save monitoring at the exit nodes, which is strongly discouraged, so no.
acorn
I can run tbb-firefox.exe
but I can't run firefox through the tor launcher
dfi
dr|z3d: ok, i had exit node stats in mind
dr|z3d
dfi: http://torstatus.blutmagie.de for example?
That's about as good as it gets.
dfi
mhm, ic
acorn
seems strange that restarting and reinstalling doesn't fix it
dr|z3d
acorn: You might want to stick around until sjmurdoc1 appears..
phobos
which version of tbb?
acorn
I downloaded it yesterday, so the latest version
phobos
what's the actual version of the filename?
or it'll say at the bottom of the README file
acorn
1.2.9
phobos
odd
which windows?
acorn
windows 7
it worked before
phobos
of course, the one OS i don't have
