i need to install a freebsd box. i haven't used bsd in ages... i used to be a hardcore addict but their lack of virtualization support (7 years ago) drew me into the linux world
morfin
i am not limited now and can even install php56
jtreminio
ubuntu doesn't use git
morfin
what a heck is PHPDbg?
jtreminio
alternative to xdebug
morfin
oh
Bad_Advice_Cat
It's gonna be awesome.
PHPDBG that is.
Scott0_
what's the best way to get plaintext columns of data that line up?
__adrian
monospaced font

Scott0_
is there something other than the tab which can do that?
__adrian
spaces
Scott0_
im using a monospaced font, but some lines have different length data
__adrian
so count them :)
find the length of the longest line, and padd the others to match.

Hey guys! Running into an issue where apache is dying without any error, there are no errors in the access / error logs. It only appears to occur when inside a wordpress theme, if the code is in the wp-config I get an printed exception on the screen. But if the error is in the layout php straigt dies, no further processing and no output anywhere. Any random ideas? #wordpress is being dead silent.

Scott0_
is there any library or resource I can feed my data into and get the right format?
and here I thought a text email would be easier :P
__adrian
i don't know. it's pretty simple not sure there's a big need for writing a library
Scott0_
__adrian: writing something to do that vs having something that does it already
__adrian
do you understand the process I described? give it a try.
Scott0_
doesn't matter if you consider it simple
nah ill just use html instead
its not worth it
__adrian
ok.
Scott0_
with your attitude, why do you use php at all?
__adrian
?
Scott0_
its full of functions which save you time from having to create your own
__adrian
yeah. like mb_strlen() and strpad()
Scott0_
there are plenty of php functions which are simple to recreate
but that doesn't invalidate their usefulness
__adrian
i don't disagree ...? i was encouraging you to try them
Scott0_
ok well iw as asking for something already made I guess
__adrian
but if you don't think it's worth it, i'm cool with that too
ah.

Scott0_
I thought that was implied
but its ok, that ship has sailed
__adrian
this isn't a "give me code" kind of place. it's a "we'll help you learn" kind of place.
Scott0_
not looking for give code away
__adrian
but if i had known of a library, i would have pointed you towards it.
Scott0_
although that's what php is
__adrian
just don't happen to
Scott0_
its premade functions
which is given away
so... yeah
ill figure it out
__adrian
ok

So no ideas on php turning into a puff of smoke :) ?
__adrian
smoke?? sounds exciting
blackley1
Haha it just dies!
Literally puff into smoke I swear!
__adrian
wait, reading. php, or apache?
blackley1
Im unsure....
Apache doesnt log anything... Php doesnt print anything.
But the page just comes to a dead hault at ANY exception in the layout.
__adrian
well, if you request the page again, is apache still running?
blackley1
Outside the layout errors are disaplayed properly.
Yes apache does not die like that!
I can continue to request pages / navigate properly
__adrian
ok, you say there are errors displayed on the screen?
blackley1
There are, if I make a test page. Or make a syntax error in wp-config.php
But if im in my layout, or any wp-plugin. Nothing.
Instant death.
__adrian
ok, so no errors. do you see *anything*? or blank page?
blackley1
I see the whole page up to the syntax error... I have echo "1"; before the error and I see 1 printed. But the echo "2"; after the error is not printed. Nothing else on the page is sent to the client.
Eg nothing *after the error
__adrian
in your php.ini file, double-check your settings for !+error reporting
php-bot
in your php.ini file, double-check your settings for, Set 'error_reporting' to -1 and 'display_errors' to 1 in your php.ini and be sure to restart your webserver/fastcgi-listeners. This is more reliable than using ini_set() and error_reporting() in the script, which will fail if there are parse errors. See http://php.net/errorfunc.configuration for more.
__adrian
(even if you already have. just humor me. can't hurt to double-check)
blackley1
I will :) Been there a few times today.
1 sec
__adrian
k
blackley1
Idiot checking here: /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini
__adrian
do you have error_log set?
second sanity check: is that the php.ini you're actually loading?
blackley1
How would I check that ?
__adrian
<?php phpinfo();
look for "loaded configuration file"
you say you've narrowed the problem down to a theme file? are there any "@"s in the code (e.g., before function calls, etc.)?
blackley1
Uh no any exception will do it... I can literally type <?php PHP WHYYYYYY ?> and I get no errors...
__adrian
if you don't get anything from parse errors, then it's your ini settings. bet it's a different file.
though it could always be something dumb some wp theme dev did. they do that.
blackley1
Here are my relavant php.ini
http://pastebin.com/u2uED8Jt
I coded the WP Theme from the ground up... Nothing janky I can remember :)
Looking up php info now.
__adrian
do you have an error_log directive set (this sets the path to your error log file)?
blackley1
Where would that be set?
__adrian
in your php.ini
blackley1
Okay let me check...
PHP is loading "/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini "
so thats the ini I am changing.
__adrian
if it's not set, they would typically be logged whereever apache logs errors.
but a lot of things might affect that
blackley1
error_log was not set.
__adrian
did you say you've narrowed down the line where the error occurs?
blackley1
Any error will do it.
I can make it fail wherever.
__adrian
you're sure you restarted the server after changing your ini file?
