cythrawll
there is no such thing as "best"
smith007
does that googledork still help to upload php files
KimmoA1
cythrawll: I have tested many in the past. All seemed to be a mess.
smith007
?
cythrawll
it just what your need, skill levels are
FreeBSD is no different, choosing that over any linux distro
richardlynch
If one wanted to get seriously flamed by FreeBSD folks, one could even claim that in many ways FreeBSD is just another Linux distro... :-) :-) :-)
KimmoA1
FreeBSD is just "the best available" for servers... IMO. And it's an actual OS -- not a (perhaps good) kernel wrapped inside tons of software and weird means of installing/updating.
cobar
KimmoA1: is FreeBSD or DragonFlyBSD better, because it's pretty easy to argue that DF has better technical potential
KimmoA1
I wouldn't know about DragonFlyBSD :S

cythrawll
KimmoA1, FreeBSD is no different in that aspect
the kernel IS an OS
OpenBSD
or NETBSD
cobar
KimmoA1: oh so you're saying you might have to examine the different BSD's to know which one is "best" ;)
KimmoA1
cobar: They're not distros of the same OS...
cythrawll
no their not
they don't use the same kernel AT ALL
KimmoA1
My point is that "FreeBSD" refers to (basically) one thing. "Linux" could refer to any of the 500+ distros.
cobar
KimmoA1: DF very nearly is, it's a fork of FBSD 4.x
cythrawll
KimmoA1, that's not fair
try *BSD and Linux
KimmoA1
Why isn't it fair? :/
cythrawll
don't comapre FreeBSD with linux
cobar
KimmoA1: well, most linux software runs on most linux distros and 90% of users use either Ubuntu, Suse, or RHEL/Fedora
cythrawll
in that way, compare FreeBSD and Fedora Core
smith007
http://webstyle.ch nothing like free hosting there
why
?
cobar
one can simply say, i run Fedora Core 5 linux and it's pretty obvious what you're talking about
Master_Shake
KimmoA1, I agree. It did take a bout a year.
cobar
besides PC BSD is a distro of FBSD as well
Master_Shake
KimmoA1, It's allabout Ubuntu and Gentoo.
KimmoA1
Bah.
cobar
gentoo gives me the shakes, too much work for too little gain
KimmoA1
(Note that we're talking about servers only here.)
I wouldn't wanna run FreeBSD on a desktop... it feels wrong.
cythrawll
semantics

richardlynch
I would run FreeBSD on a desktop which is a development localhost server for building websites. :-)
cobar
when you get down to it, the OS doesn't matter nearly as much as what you do with it. i want to spend my time programming and getting work done, not admin'ing
KimmoA1
richardlynch: Any OS is good for that. ;)
richardlynch
Actually, I've run FreeBSD on desktops, and am happy with it. Laptops too, for that matter.
cythrawll
KimmoA1, except windows
richardlynch
No, I want my dev environment to MATCH my server, 100%
KimmoA1
Well... the slogan "The power to serve" feels kind of wrong if you use it for a non-server.
richardlynch
It is a server. It's just only got one user. :-)
cobar
and slogans matter more than functionality?
Master_Shake
cobar, Gentoo is good for people who want to build something from CVS every half day by typing emerge <crazy package>. Like Compiz junkies.
KimmoA1
It's about psychology for me...
cobar
Master_Shake: pretty much, i'm pretty happy with precompiled packages that generally just work. and i can handle compiling the 1 random thing that's not in my package archive
Master_Shake
KimmoA1, It still has the power to, you're just not using it in that case. Kind of like how are government had the power to stop the NSA from their illegal programs, but they didn't.
KimmoA1
:S :)
Xyphoid
mod_security is really interesting. man there's a lot of crap thrown at servers.
KimmoA1
"The power to serve... and act as a workstation!"
Master_Shake
cobar, Same reason I'm using Ubuntu on a 400 mhz PII.
cythrawll
mod_security rocks
cobar
Master_Shake: exactly
(Action) has been happy enough with FC that he hasn't had need to switch
richardlynch
I dunno about the "good" things in mod_security, but it's been a PITA twice for me, not letting me do what I want, when I know what I'm doing.
cythrawll
yeah i have the same experience with slackware
Xyphoid
the mod_security-php.conf they provide is pretty retarded
cythrawll
I've tried others, but im happy and comfortable with it
richardlynch
Oh, I don't SWITCH OSes. I just use different ones on different boxes.
Xyphoid
but otherwise I like it
KimmoA1
Very OT, but don't you find this cool? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2402971859076006049
cythrawll
I'd like to get a junk box to run random OSes sometime, like freeBSD and OpenBSD just for testing different things
KimmoA1
Cool 100 year old special effects... :S
Master_Shake
cythrawll, OpenBSD was nice.
jsoft
damn straight obsd is nice.
Master_Shake
cythrawll, For me . . (it _is_ nice).
jsoft
netbsd is nice too, for backend stuff
smith007
need help on this host http://webstyle.ch/
Master_Shake
So what's this I heard about NetBSD running on a toaster?
smith007
unable to find the free services
richardlynch
smith007: We're not here to do that for you...
Jymmm
smith007: Enough, this is NOT the place for that.
cythrawll
oh man
smith007
huh
is this proper
?
cythrawll
i just discovered a bag of gummy worms
me == win
Xyphoid
the acidic ones?
smith007
can any body help pls
i need this stuff
very urgent
cythrawll
thank you
jsoft
Master_Shake: yeah... some guy set it up on a toaster. I dont know the details, but they are on the netbsd.org site iirc.
cythrawll
#asp
er
jsoft
anyone noticed linux has shocking performance when it comes to IO? as in, if there is some sort of heavy IO going on, it slows to a crawl?
cythrawll
wow that's the smallest channel i've seen yet in freenode
Master_Shake
http://www.embeddedarm.com/news/netbsd_toaster.htm
richardlynch
jsoft: Using which disk format thingie?
#chiphp is smaller :-)
cythrawll
LFG to raid #ASP to kill racial leader.
jsoft
richardlynch: ext3
richardlynch
Oh. It was a rhetorical question, really... Though I'm sure others actually know which file systems work better/faster for which uses.
jsoft
Meh... im not going to use some random filesystem on a production box.
Gotta start migrating the boxes here to bsd.
richardlynch
I don't think one can consider ALL the other choices as "some random filesystem"...
jsoft
Yeah I know, but I would not trust them in production.
richardlynch
Well, SOME of them are certainly trustworthy, though possibly even slower. Reiser-fs springs to mind. :-) And, also, is the fs "tuned" for the file sizes? Partitions, block-sizes, etc?
Not that I actually understand all that, mind you, just know that it matters. :-)
PeterFA
I need a php fork bomb.
There's a bot that's recording everything we say in this channel, and I want to fork bomb it... it posts everything we say on the interweb...
So.. i'm thinking dropping a fork bomb in the code... since it might not be sophisticated to strip out php code :D
htns
Hello, is anybody here going to UT?
KimmoA1
UT?
jsoft
richardlynch: I dont know. I dont really think its a filesystem thing as much as it is a problem in the kernel.
htns
University of Texas at Austin
It's a bit offtopic, but I need to know
richardlynch
jsoft: Perhaps #linux could tell you if you are correct or not.
KimmoA1
Hrm...
cbchui
am i missing some configs ? Invalid command 'php_flag', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
KimmoA1
Sticky or unsticky signatures? :/
cbchui
i rememberd to load an extension but i forgot what is it
i am running on debian
mamay
is it possible to log E_ERROR level events via a custom error handler or anything similar in PHP5
PeterFA
No php fork bomb?
:(
richardlynch
mamy: http://php.net/set_error_handler
PeterFA: <?php fork();?>
PeterFA
Well, I just found out it's not logging anymore.
mamay
richardlynch: that does not handle E_ERROR
PeterFA
richardlynch, does that infinitely recurse?
richardlynch
PeterFA: I doubt it. I'm not writing one FOR you.
cythrawll
jsoft > reiserfs > ext3
coming from a reiser fanboi
PeterFA
richardlynch, I don't want to work hard to think of one... well... the bot isn't recording, so no big deal now.
cythrawll
and it is a filesystem thing
mamay
that's too bad, i'd much appreciate it if someone did
PeterFA
richardlynch, I wanted to be quick about it. Someone else who's a lot better is a lot faster than I am.
Stoner
anyone know where i can get a ready made registration page please?
richardlynch
mamay: If E_ERROR cannot be caught by it then you could maybe catch (some of) E_ERROR with http://php.net/ob_start Some compile-time errrors, however, will probably break out of that...
Pollita
Move reiserfs to the right hand of that equation and you might be right
richardlynch
Stoner: Did you Google for it? Cuz there's a million out there.
cythrawll
aww don't like reiserfs?
richardlynch
Keep in mind jsoft wants FASTER, not safer, more robust, nor more stable. At least, that's what he first said...
mamay
i'm not sure that catching it is possible with ob_start if the ob_start and E_ERROR are thrown from the same page running on apache
Pollita
ext3 for the win
cythrawll
i've had alot less stability issues with reiser than with ext3, reiser is one of those things that "just works" and it's much faster than ext3
Pollita
But I don't want to start a holy war
If it means that much to you..... we can say reiserfs is better
cythrawll
yay
<3
cheatersrealm
if I have a function in php, and I pass it a variable, does it do pass by refrence or pass by value?
Pollita
by-value (unless you tell it otherwise)
cheatersrealm
how can I make it by refrence?
Pollita
function passbyval($foo) { } function passbyref(&$foo) { }
jsoft
richardlynch: no, I want faster, but stable. I did mention it was on a PRODUCTION box, and I did mention my distrust of random filesystems, eg, I want something STABLE
