answer is, you have to do it with oracle shutdown.

Hi
Anyone who tried implementing oracle rac under the container
Junior
hello!
i am using rman to backup my database. the thing is that now i have several backups starting with 20150329 and up to 20150801 (1 every month) that are on dist but do not show up in RMAN -> list backup summary. can i safely delete them?
GenteelBen
Better ask the Senior.
(I don't know.)
petteja
Junior: if they are not known to rman, you can run "catalog start with '/path/to/backups'" to catalog them
and then set up retention policies in rman
Junior
petteja they were "known", as rman did those, but i don't know the reason why it kept the files there
i have a backup on 20150329 (if i recall well here i have installed the db) , 20150401 , 20150501 , 20150601 , 20150701
petteja
it wont delete anything unless you specify retention policy
or delete the backups yourself
Junior
in the rman script i have 2> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 31 DAYS;
http://pastebin.com/72a1DVX3
this is the "backup script"
this is my first backup script, i might have missed importand points,as it was done with examples combined of what i have found using google
petteja it keeps the first date of the month to use in incremenal backups? or any ideeas?
thanks!
petteja
you never do level 0 backup?

Junior
i'm using expdp to do a full backup daily
petteja
expdp isn't backup ;)
but, if you dont do level 0 backup, it will probably never delete the level 1 backups
if you have large data volues, impdp will take ages
Junior
@expdp %1/%2@%DB_NAME% directory=EXPORT_DIR dumpfile=exp_%DB_NAME%_%%U.dmp logfile=exp_%DB_NAME%.log VERSION=11.2 parallel=8 reuse_dumpfiles=y SCHEMAS=%1%
petteja, level 0, no, because i use that batch
petteja around 4 hours, planning to keep install a new machine to replicate data, but that's another story
but now back to my question, can i safely detele those backups?
i cannot find them in rman
petteja
maybe you shold try to run "restore database validate". to make sure you actually have av valid backup
Junior
done 5 minutes ago 'delete backup completed before 'sysdate-20'' and several backups were deleted
petteja, just to be 100% sure -> RESTORE DATABASE VALIDATE; will just validate, won't do anything else, right?
petteja
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
"The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files."
Junior
ran it
petteja
should give you an indication
Junior
nothing critical
http://pastebin.com/e68j3hkM
petteja
oh, you do image copies. didnt see that. then you can probably delete the old backups. if they dont show in list backup summary
probably best to move them
first
Junior
petteja i've ran atleast 3 time list backup summary and looked, copied the output to a text file and searched in it
petteja
i only use compressed backupset
okay
Junior
the first backup is on 18-AUG-15 now (as i ran 'delete backup completed before 'sysdate-20'' )
ok, have to run now, thank you for your time, will comeback tomorrow :)
petteja
no problem. have fun :)
Junior
same to you :)
