Ramen: hmm. your library path is set to the 32-bits libs, yet you try to run a 64 bit app?
Ramen
err probably lol google tells me I have a 32bit client... but doesn't tell me how to change to a 64 bit
I tried Oracle Database 11g Release 1 Client (11.1.0.6.0)
for Microsoft Windows (x64) ... it's a no go
but you'd figure it would of installed the 64 bit client when i installed the 64 bit oracle o.o
it's both on my dev machine

whats a cursor
TheBonsai
more or less a pointer into a result (or the combo of a result and your ability to use it) - form PL/SQL's point of view
maybe there's somebody with a better description :)
kanch
hey guys whats the difference between timestamps "with time zone" and "with local time zone"?
dsdel
local timezone -> the database timezone will be used
timezone -> you specify the timezone

kanch
dsdel, thanks

hi all
it's possible to see history of sqlplus command?
without spool command before
:P
dsdel
!list in linux IIRC
g10k
list return 'No buffer SQL'

hi everyone, i'm hoping someone can help. I created and manipulated a large table. Now the archivelogs are taking up all the disk space. I'm not worried about this table it can be dropped. I can connect using "sqlplus / as sysdba" (i had to clear some disk space). Every time I clear disk space, oracle eats it all up. Is it possible to stop oracle eating this space? If I drop the table, will oracle stop producing logs?
dsdel
_EVERY_ change to the database will be logged to archive logs
only this way the consisntency of the database after a crash/bad blocks/other problems can be made sure
naturally oracle will write always the disk space full as soon as it is free to achieve the consistency through archive logs
if you don't want to have archive logs created you have to turn off archive log mode
but never do this for productive systems, only when you are really really really sure what you do
but afaik you can't turn off archive logging for one table
andybe
it is currently a dev database
if I drop the table, I assume it will still try and write the logs to catch up?
hali
dropping it wont do any good
you'll just generate more undo and redo
andybe
ok, not what I want then :)
any suggestions on getting my database back? as fast as I clear disk space, it gets used up, the logs are not being backed up and cleared out either, because the disk is so full the backup agent cannot start and oracle is refusing connections
(sorry if i'm not making sense, i'm not a dba, so this is a bit new to me)
Symbi0nt
has oracle variable definitions which can be used inside script, which are not to much bound to pl/sql or sql+plus?
something like define foo = '2008-04-04'; ?
andybe
can I suspend the writing of the archivelogs and keep the database up, so I can run the backups?
hali
you can defer the log destination
andybe
sorry, what does that mean?
hali, what do you mean when you say "defer the log destination"?
hali
set the archive log destination to deferred
cant remember the exact syntax
andybe
ok, i see and that will "pause" the writing of the archivelogs?
so I can backup and clear the directory

anyone on SSO?

hypno
this is really starting to get to me. how in the world do you specify a hostname and port with this "Oracle Connect String"-thingy?
lozon
which oracle connect string?
do you have an example?
hypno
most examples use something like: "user/pass@instance", as if the precense of a network would be "odd".
lozon
I can show you my connection string for java, just a sec.

hypno
lozon: i am using OCILIB. i just want to specify the hostname and the port, along with username, instance, password...
lozon
yes, my string should give you an idea
sec, forgot where i stored it, lol
jdbc:oracle:thin:@myhost:1521:xe (no username in this)
the first part is the driver
jdbc:oracle:thin:username/password@myhost:1521:xe maybe?
hypno
username and password are separate in ocilib.
and the driver is of of course OCI beneath.
lozon
http://www.connectionstrings.com/oracle
I'm not sure on that, I just saw your problem and figured i would copy pasta my string. back to work, good luck hypno

anyone got a link to a oracle rac 11gr1 installation guide on RHEL 5 ?

prodigy
what linux and oracle versions are you running
are you working directly on the server with the oracle db or are you using ssh
geaaru
i'm using ssh to a redhat-5.2

is there anyone somewhat experienced on SSO and reverse proxying with ohs?
geaaru
i'm downloading new jdk because i have an exception with java-1.4.2

are you using windows on your pc if so download xming xserver and setup putty to forward x11

hali
geaaru: do you have your system hostname under 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts by any chance?
geaaru
it is a remote connection , not in localhost
hali
yes but on the oracle server itself
geaaru
in localhost connection works fine

I need help with Banner GUAABOT
The print window never shows up
Xgc
Slashy: You need to provide more detail.
Slashy
It's Sungard Banner?
Xgc
Slashy: No idea what that is. Did you get it from Oracle?
Slashy
Yes
At least Oracle is the meat behind the program
Xgc
I suspect you'll need to provide more detail. What does this have to do with the oracle database?
You probably should contact your software vendor, sungard.
Unless you can ask an Oracle related question.
zasz
or pain will be administered
sytse
are random oracles also allowed? :P
matelot_
hi Can I do this in SQLPlus script:: "define xtab = 'emp2' .... create table &xtab as select * from emp' ?
Xgc
matelot_: See uses of [execute immediate] and dynamic SQL generation.
mjt
but it will work just fine as is
in sqlplus that is
matelot_
Xgc, no, it has to be sqlplus script
mjt
Are there a way to get something like DUL _fast_, for a one-time db recovery?
s/Are/Is/
someone suggested to create a service request, but i never tried that so have no idea how to do that ;)
matelot_
in SQLplus script ".... create table &xtab as select * from emp' can I pass "xtab" as a parameter ?
mjt
yes
&1 &2 etc
define xtab &1
also see `set verify on/off'
matelot_
ah ok let me try "define xtab &1" thanks mjt
mjt
(or with equal sign.. i forgot)
hm. What _is_ a CSI ?
matelot_
ok
mjt
we've "oracle partner" status, for about 10 years, but never tried to submit a single SR so far :)
matelot_
Is there a way to stop/prevent SqlPlus from running "glogin.sql" ?
ganderson
matelot_: why do you need to? Is there a directive in the glogin.sql you don't want to run?
mjt
is there some page somewhere that explains how to get support? Like, what is a "CSI" (we've 3 of them), what's needed to get all necessary rights etc?
it's the first time in some 10 years when i really need help, but i dunno where to get it.
matelot_
ganderson: apparently, the FIRST paarameter "&1" seen by my script is this nonsense: "Files\oracle\instantclient\instantclient_10_2\sqlplus\admin\glogin.sql"
so I was just wondering if there is a switch to tell SqlPlus to not run the profile files
ganderson
matelot_: huh..not sure off the top of my head. iirc, it always runs the glogin.sql
toste
oi
is it possible to rollback many insert/update if they are linked by a single connection session?
mjt
hmm? like flashback?
toste
ie if an error happend during one of the insert's, can i just rollback everything during thoses inserts, since they used the same connection^
don't know the flashback concept
mjt
the data isn't comitted until you say 'commit' or exit
unless you commit after every statement
ganderson
matelot_: I'm not seeing anything about disabling/ignoring the glogin.sql on startup. Only thing I can think of is to see if you can edit the glogin.sql file to correct any issues you're having
mjt
(like set autocommit on)
toste
ohh nice, yeah, thats what i need, a commit not tied to a single call
but a bunch of them
mjt
read about transactions
matelot_
ganderson, that's fine I will just NOT refer to "&1" in my script thanks
toste
thanks mjt
