Mmm good eating on a rabbit
jumperboy
RJarett: i have 2 addresses in my list
Zasz
not bad, quiet day. Friend from canada was visiting but he left this morning
jumperboy
in fact, i'm pretty sure i was able to connect when one server went down, and i was only using SID
Zasz
finished my 9i and 10g OCA... studying for the admin II exam now... easy stuff though
jumperboy
but i read in some forum that failover only works with SERVICE_NAME
Zasz
when you're doing it all day long anyway
you think you'll ever go in for your OCM? work says they will pay for mine but i think it will be a good 2 years or so before i am qualified
RJarett
nope. due to oracles tax and requirement for taking classes in order to test, i refuse to get certs
just took out another rabbit :)
DiscordianUK
another for the freezer

RJarett
yep
DiscordianUK
free food++
RJarett
Zasz oracle, vmware and a few other companies are like that. for easy low end certs, even some higher end like ocm, they force 1 or 2 classes on you which really dont even relate
Zasz
would your work pay for it
RJarett
why make them bother?
not like it would get me more money at this point
oracle is part of my job nowdays but it is not my main focus
Zasz
ocm's would make more than non ocm's generally speaking owuld they not
RJarett
if i wanted to be a fulltime consultant maybe
i think ill go for cissp and maybe a cisco voice cert in the next year or 2 if i bother with any
Zasz
i think i'd like to do that eventually. not even close to being there yet.
all i know is oracle consultants can make insane bank, and having x amount of clients supplying my income is better than one corporation
RJarett
wait till you have to travel 6 days a week
turning into an alcoholic since you have nothing to do but sit in the hotel bar all night
i hate doing just 1 thing
if you are an ocm, all you are doing is going into a place, trying to fix poorly written crap. or help them "plan" a new system
same thing all the time.
Zasz
probably good enough for me
lol
i'd be fine doing that for 300k
haha
RJarett
arguing online with jlewis and kyte and mile ault about little internals stupidity that doesnt really make a difference
you wont be making 300k
Zasz
shucks only 250?
RJarett
most i know of dont make more than 150
and alot being consultants have to eat alot of their costs for travel and such
Zasz
are any all that good? heh
uhhh
you bill the client for travel
wtf?
RJarett
and as a 1099 you pay for your own bennies
i prefer life on payroll
Zasz
if your consultant friends are paying for travel out of their own pockets they are not doing something right
RJarett
trying to smooze the right people for big projects
taking them out to dinner or crap like that. drinks
Zasz
you around 130 or so?
RJarett
yeah
brb have to try to kill a groundhog
grrr ran off
Zasz
leave the critters alone jerry

RJarett
they attack my garden i attack them
plus i picked up this pellet gun yesterday and i forgot how fun it was
i just killed a squirrel at like 80m
Zasz
lol
DiscordianUK
ooh never tried squirrel
RJarett
im amazed i got it

quick question. if I've got a variable insert_id NUMBER should something like this work? 'SELECT GroupName.ID into insert_id FROM GroupName WHERE GroupName.GroupName = 'Administrator';'
usn_work
good morning
A just really urgent question: It's 11gR2, opening lots of child cursors for one UPDATE statement. Its shareable, but not bind aware. After several minutes if have more than 1000 child cursors!
Due to that, I have huge CPU load from "cursor: mutex s" waits
Does anyone have an advice for me?
(Oracle SR already opened, but no answer yet)

Can anyone help me in getting the SQL developer client to access a VMWare Linux/Oracle instance?
Zasz
what's the problem?
dollarbang
The firefox ISqlplus is able to connect via 192.168.190.128:5560/isqlplus. I haven't figured out how to configure the new connection for SQL Developer.
Zasz
well, I've connected to oracle dbs with sql developer before and I don't remember having any issues
is there some information it's asking for that you're unsure of?
dollarbang
I'm a newbie to this Oracle world. So I don't know a connector from a listener (yet). I thought I understood why the IP address worked, but the connection setup for SQL Developer is different.
I would like to try and get the SQL developer to work instead of using the IE/Firefox interface.
For a connection Hostname: I'm putting in the ip address of the Linux/Oracle instance. for the port, where the firefox url has 5560. What would SQL Developer want for hostname/port
