define "faster"?
without a where clause it wouldnt touch the index. it would know to full scan the table
you may get lucky with the where via a index fast full scan
respecting
the first one take about 5 minutes the second 9
RJarett
but you really need to learn to use explain plans and traces
since it answers all this for you
respecting
i have a problem must my database administrator add me some previliges to make an explain
RJarett
no
explain plan for select whatever

how do i do schema export from 9i to 10g directly? use 9i agent on 10g with some options?
drdimitri
Reign1: export you schema with exp and import it with imp. I don't see any other way - apart from using dblinks and writing a pl/sql program creating the objects and loading the tables.
Reign1
ok and another thing, i forgot what compress options for tablespace are on 10g, as on 11g its ok with compress for all operations, what about 10g?

Why are two dots being used in this code snippet?
l_largeFile &GLOBAL_SITE_SCHEMA_NAME..C_FILE_FILE%ROWTYPE;
This is in the declare section of a pl/sql script.

drdimitri: hi, yesterday we discussed the select :1 from... statement
i found that if i have a parameter in the select_list, it cannot be used again in a where clause. odd
so with oracle, i cannot write select :1... from... where ...=:1...
but i must write write select :1... from... where ...=:2...
and pass the parameter twice
drdimitri
hlavaty: correct but you can also write select :1 from table where col1=:1 - these are only placeholders :x would also be valid. You have to bind every placeholder.
hlavaty
drdimitri: well, select :1 from table where col1=:1 doesn't work i must write it as select :1 from table where col1=:2 and bind :1 :2 to the same value
drdimitri
Strange. I tried it in PL/SQL and it worked. Also in Java/JDBC where you only use ? instead of :1 :2
hlavaty
drdimitri: hmm, if you use ? only it probably binds the value for each occurence of ? i guess so it would be equivalent to the second form select :1... from... where ...=:2...
also, querying via oci/jdbc is probably more restrictive than using pl/sql where this problem doesn't exist?
drdimitri
I don't know. I've never used pure OCI
I'm using PL/SQL and java
hlavaty
i see, thanks for ideas!

hello all. if i have a query like select * from table where lower(name) like lower(p_name) where p_name contains a hyphen/dash character, how do i escape it?

For several weeks now I've noticed that downloading from download.oracle.com is very slow. I'm getting speeds from 7 - 30 kbps over a T1. Is there another oracle site to download software from?
RJarett
change the url from download-east to west or vice versa
chuckh1958
Either east or west just redirects to download.oracle.com
RJarett: Is there a link for paying customers to get better speeds on support.oracle.com? If so I have not found it. I'm trying to download the Weblogic server. Ran all night last night and then aborted after 50m.
Weblogic for Sparc that is.
RJarett
no
whats the url. ill test my speed to it
chuckh1958
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/wls_main.html
RJarett
yeah thats pretty bad
http://download-uk.oracle.com/otn/nt/middleware/11g/wls1033_oepe111150_win32.exe
add -uk
i get 1MB/sec
chuckh1958
Is there a link there for the sparc version?
RJarett
http://download-uk.oracle.com/otn/solaris/middleware/11g/wls1033_solaris32.bin but thats going slow too
so it may not be mirrored
interesting they are all on llnwd.net redirectors
even -uk
so i know its a load balancing director
just depends where it puts you
250KB/sec is the fastest i can get the solaris
but if you can wait an hour ill have it
it peaks at 300KB/s
400KB/s
stalled then back up

chuckh1958
Makes no differnece which URL I go to. They all redirect to download.oracle.com and use the same url for downloading the files. What exactly do I need for running 11g OEM besides the OEM download. Just the generic Weblogic download?
RJarett
you shouldnt need any weblogic for OEM
but i dunno
maybe they changed it
chuckh1958
I
RJarett
do you mean grid control?
chuckh1958
I'm using grid control not db console
yes
The prereq's say you need to have a db repository and weblogic instance running. But what does weblogic run on if I can download a "generic" one. Is it java?
RJarett
http://nafey1.blogspot.com/2010/04/oracle-grid-control-11g-installation.html
yes 11g GC looks like it needs weblogic server
chuckh1958
Is weblogic java based?
RJarett
been so long, i have no clue
chuckh1958
So the only platform specific thing I'd need is a JRE?
RJarett
do you have an FTP?
hlavaty
chuckh1958: yes weblogic runs on JVM
RJarett
what oracle charges for grid control is disgusting, so i tend to avoid it. and Ill just play with a copy every now and then to learn it every version. havent on 11 yet
chuckh1958
ok. I've been downloading a different wls binary. Maybe the generic one will be faster.
Nope. No faster. :(
RJarett
yeah mine dropped to 1kb/sec
if you have support you can call in and request a copy from the tapecut group if they are still around
chuckh1958
I'm going to open an SR to report the problem. It's amost like Oracle doesn't even know there is a problem.
