hi
archangle25
shutdown immediate isnt shutting down the DB. I was performing a recover database using backup controlfile, which seemed to return fine. its a test DB so no real drama. just want to shut it down so i can refresh it.
can i just kill all the processes and clone it again from the offline backups?
dsdel
archangle25: check the alertlog
archangle25
SHUTDOWN: waiting for active calls to complete. Theres nothin i care about running against this DB
should i just kill all the sessions?
dsdel
there was no immediate done
shutdown - was sent but not shutdown immediate
now you have to close/kill all open sql sessions
but don't kill your own :D you won't be able to login again hehe

please tell me , what's wrong?
mator
xiaoshen, line 93 of pastebin, dual doesn't have SQ_TRXLOGH.nextval
xiaoshen
can u help me from the beginning it said at line 5 is error
mator
fix what I told you first
xiaoshen
no no i have already solved it bymyself
missing semicolon
when creating a table
tryggvib
out of curiosity, if someone here knows OLAP, how many fact tables should one have... as many as needed?
or should one try to design the database around a single fact table?
ah... found my answer
abhi_nav
which is open office channel?
????
urgent
mator
abhi_nav, google.com -> openoffice irc channel
abhi_nav
:(
hali
nothing on irc is urgent ;)
abhi_nav
:'(
but then oo should have proper documentation on net, isnt it?
hali
yeah, they should have something like documentation.openoffice.org ... wouldn't that be great?
mator
(Action) & cat care - feeding
hali
plus im not sure how this relates to oracle
abhi_nav
ohhh this doesnt relates to oracle? what a joke? oracle is owner now, arent they?
hali
of staroffice yes
abhi_nav
and not of open office?
hali
anyway ^^
mod_cure
is there an auto increment atrribute when creating the primary key ?
zasz
no, you can use a sequence though

mod_cure
zasz, a trigger that gets the nextval ?
zasz
No, it's a sequence
it's a type of object
it's used for generating values. hit the documentation and read about it
mod_cure
k
wonder why oracle doesnt have the auto increment :)
zasz
it's used for exactly that
mod_cure
k
zasz, i see now. pretty neat
zasz
good
mod_cure
zasz, how long have u been using oracle ?
zasz
8 months or so
you?
mod_cure
less :)
hobby, want to learn it. we use MySQL at work. thought it would be good to learn another database
zasz
former sysadmin turned sql server dba turned oracle dba
still new to oracle but not new to the field
2nd OCP exam is on wednesday :)
mod_cure
:)
usn_work
hi folx
mod_cure
usn_work, how goes ?
usn_work
all sup )
prodcutnews
lol support for linuxes, none such for ORACLE database ...moew
none talks as openly [open hearted] as such of free linuxes, does earnings are more in oracle, so such red-tapism is maintained
Trengo
that wasnt really english was it?
prodcutnews
but short and sweet..
zasz
wait what
mod_cure
zasz, i assume most people have triggers setup with the sequence object to automate this process instead of the application layer.
zasz
do you understand how you use sequences
mod_cure
zasz, yes
zasz, surprise oracle doesnt have a auto increment attribute that maintains all this stuff for a table
instead of me setting up a trigger with sequence object etc
zasz
why would you use a trigger
INSERT INTO suppliers
(supplier_id, supplier_name)
VALUES
(supplier_seq.nextval, 'Kraft Foods');
that is not so bad
mod_cure
true
zasz
why would you use a trigger
mod_cure
i see your point
im use to mysql handling the auto increment for me
i never supplied a value for it
zasz
welcome to oracle
mod_cure
yep
lozon
I have a funny query question.
TheBonsai
wuahahahahahahaha
(sorry)
lozon
I want to use an aggregate function (MAX) and return another column. The don't want to group the column, I just want to return the value of the column where MAX(value) is the max.
I'm thinking I could use a sub-query, but I don't want to make it too complicated.
For example: select max(age), name from persons
zasz
yes just use an uncorrelated subquery
lozon
Hrm, was kinda hoping to stay away from subqueries, but it is an odd request.
zasz
why
an uncorrelated sub query is evaluated just once anyway
lozon
The overall query is much larger...but, uncorrelated will only run once if it makes no reference to the outer query?
zasz
i just said that
think about it, why would it evaluate more than once
the db needs to be read consistent so it can't change from the time the transaction starts till it finishes
lozon
if the outer query was a sub query =P
zasz
what sense would there be in re evaulated an uncorrelated subquery
lozon
*correlated subquery
The main query has a fairly large where clause, so in order to replicate that into a new sub query is kind of messy...was just hoping to bypass it.
zasz
heh
well, put it in a variable?
lozon
That was my other idea ;)
BLZbubba
testing
ok i have a question; after my oracle install, it seems that all of the files are in a group named "oinstall"
is there a problem if I rename the group to just "oracle" and get rid of oinstall altogether? e.g. will any oracle binaries be hard coded to look for oinstall?
some machines seem to have a "dba" group too
dddh
BLZbubba: "id oracle"
kaylee_work
hey, is there a way to change the current value of a sequence? (other than running through nextval a ton)?
BLZbubba
dddh: yeah but will there be any problems if i just groupdel oinstall?
and make the oracle user's primary group 'dba' ?
or is that something you choose at install time and cannot change later?
dddh
BLZbubba: yes, you can, but oracle user should be in dba, oper and oinstall groups
BLZbubba
even if the oinstall group doesn't exist?
or does it have to exist
dddh
kaylee_work: alter sequence your_sequence increment by 32768;
kaylee_work
but then won't it just increment by 32768 every time I hit nextval?
I was hoping there was something I could do to just one time set
dddh
kaylee_work: then "select your_sequence.nextval from dual;alter sequence your_sequence increment by 1;"
kaylee_work
oh well, I guess that will do
