hello
Ramen

how can I tell if my oracle is 32 bit or 64 bit
?
RJarett
file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
Ramen
i'm on a winfag box...
no file
RJarett
cygwin
i highly doubt you would have been smart enough to download a 64bit app if you are on windows
are you even sure your windows is 64bit?
select distinct address from v$sql where rownum<2;
8 or 16 chars?
or select * from v$version;
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit

anyone else has problems with job scheduler external jobs?
its allways the same script executed
it seems like sometimes $ORACLE_HOME doenst get set in the env
and i have no idea why
any ideas?
i set it using export ORACLE_HOME=/foo before using that variable anywhere in the script
how could it possibly sometimes not set that?
that goes beyond my understanding
anyone has similar problems?

Hi all,
I have got a little trouble when I want to install Oracle Client 10.2 on AIX 5.3. I try to install with a response file and silent mode. But after installation complete, I haven't got sqlplus and proc in the bin directory. I think I should add into the response file some stuff but I don't know how ! Maybe in this variable =>OPTIONAL_CONFIG_TOOLS ?
mgolisch
progzfr: i doubt the client installer touches your environemt configuration
that might be undesired

read the oracle concepts book if you're just getting started

hi. generating table DDL with DBMS_METADATA from sqlplus has a strange effect: it's wrapped at 80 characters regardless the LINESIZE setting from sqlplus. any hints?
found it. column format...

I am completely new to oracle. I installed the 11g enterprise software on a test machine, and am trying to get a remote client to connect to it. It appears as though oracle is bound to the address 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0 though. How do I allow remote connections to the oracle server?
RJarett
look for your listener.ora
see what you set it up with
squinky86
RJarett: I have no listener.ora. I see some listener.ora sample files in c:\oracle\11.2.0\dbhome_1\hs\admin, though
RJarett
did you configure your listener?
do you see a listener process running?
lsnrctl status
you should pickup a intro to oracle or beginners guide book
every bookstore will have them
and they are available in ebook format
squinky86
RJarett: I agree - I got tasked with creating an oracle database and no one in my group knows what to do.

RJarett
why do you need it?
you realize how expensive oracle is right?
especially enterprise edition, and the oem web gui
squinky86
Yep - a subcontractor just got fired, and that's what the database is in.
RJarett
hundreds of $K
squinky86
ok, lsnrctl shows a lot of data. The database that was set up has "Instance 'mydb', status READY, has 2 handler(s) for this service....
RJarett
ok
so its listening
from your other box, tnsping the ip of the db box
first thing you should do is make sure you are properly licensed for oracle
in case the consultant just came in and loaded it
see how large the db is. if its small you can use something free like oracle xe
if itsnot a major db, you can use standard/standard one
squinky86
RJarett: I'm trying to find tnsping - I installed the .net connection provider...
RJarett: It's a big one. We already know this is going to cost a fortune. It's almost worth hiring someone who knows what they're doing.
RJarett: tnsping wasn't installed with the client. There is no tnsping.exe in my client's installation directory.
zasz
hey oo
RJarett: i created a couple audits and I verified that they're working, where can i view what audits have been created on the db
i configured auditing on a few objects and i want to see the view or such which shows what objects are being audited
squinky86
RJarett: I did find the listener.ora file. I'm reading up on the documentation for listeners now.

Alright, I've made some progress. I'm trying to start with 10g XE and work my way up. I installed 10g XE on our server, and from the server, I can run "CONNECT USER/pass@our.server.address:1522/XE" and it will connect just fine. However, when I run the same connect command from a remote computer, it waits a little bit and gives me ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred
Any thoughts on what I should look at to resolve this issue?
RJarett
wtf are you using CONNECT USER/pass@our.server.address:1522/XE ?
it isnt sqlserver
you need to edit the tnsnames.ora on the remote client, and make an entry for the server
squinky86
testing the connection from SQL*Plus... I couldn't get the local machine to connect, so I called up the client and ran those commands manually.
RJarett: Thanks. I'll look into the tnsnames.ora thing.
RJarett
if sqlplus doesnt work, you will get no help with 3rd party stuff
on local, when you connect without a connect string that is valid, it uses the BEQUETH protocol to do a local memory attach to the db
remote, itll always go tcp
if you have a oracle client installed on the remote box, there is sometimes a netca tool to help you make a connect string
but you really should pickup an intro to oracle book
or hire someone who has touched oracle
squinky86
RJarett: I did. And the 2 Day DBA pdf.
RJarett
lovely...
all this should be answered in it
squinky86
RJarett: He's starting Monday. Problem is, client needs this tomorrow.
RJarett
then pay someone for a rush job
what is "this" that the client needs?
and how much is it worth?
im leaving for vegas this weekend and can use gambling money if you want to retain my services to fix this
Ramen
if I have multiple oracle homes .. how does a program figure out what tnsname file to use?
RJarett
TNS_ADMIN=/path/to/master
or it uses it from its home
you can never have more than 1 active at a time
Ramen
o thanks
