hi all^
i got ora out of memory error while creating a db what should i do?
XD
stede
is tehere a pl/sql method to select the lower value auf teh result of to queries(which returns one value each)?
cofeineSunshine
use SQL
union them and use MIN()
stede
ok
ty .. i will look for that
cofeineSunshine: and the "SELECT ... AS NAME.."-name of the first union query is used .. right?
cofeineSunshine
stede: no, it's a WITH clause
use UNION
ikonia
Hello dba's I'm curious to if any of you have ever tried rsync on a database in hotbackup mode to sync a database, I've got worries about it so I'm sticking with rman, but I am interested if anyone's done it or tried it
Trengo
i wouldnt even dream of it
rsyncing archived log files yes
ikonia
good to hear
Trengo
would you rsync log files?

ikonia
to be honest, never thought of using rsync for it until recently
mgolisch
hm
ocfs2 still killing my nodes:(
argh..
or rather only one
its allways the same node thats fenced
and i dont understand why
realy annoying
hali
dodgy nic?
dodgy hba?
mgolisch
this node doenst seem to respond to the heartbeat
atleast thats what i see in the surviving nodes logfile
Jun 21 10:10:58 prod2 kernel: o2net: connection to node prod1 (num 0) at 192.168.178.11:7777 has been idle for 30.0 seconds, shutting it down.
hali
dell r610/r710 running rhel5?
mgolisch
Product Name: PowerEdge R905
hali
there is a known NIC driver bug in pre rhel5 update 5 for those, broadcom problem where the nic stops forwarding traffic
doubt it's on r905 though
mgolisch
may it be because of the bond on the heartbeat interface? but then again why is it allways the same node
changed the switch allready
guess ill run top/iostat/netstat/whatever in the background, maybe that reveals something
hali
monitor failcount in the bond (/proc/net/bonding/bondX)
sysstat is always handy
just basic sar
mgolisch
but i cant realy imagine there could the that high load it wouldnt be able to respond on the nic
its 4x sixcore opterons
hali
doubtful, i had a r710 dropping interrrups to the nic the other day when we ran loadtests, r710 with 2x6-core x5660's i think... lost its NFS mounts to the netapp
mgolisch
also we share out the ocfs mount via samba, maybe samba does something strange
hali
samba does some weird locking sh*t (which you can switch off though)
but i wouldn't think that could make the node go down, unless it breaks the registery file and/or voting disk or something
mgolisch
oh and it ahs avahi installed, i wonder why
hypno
if anyone is running on mac: how do you run the (GUI) oracle enterprise manager?
the server is remote, i just need that client app to browse the database...
RJarett
fusion :P
hypno
fusion?
RJarett
vmware fusion
ganderson
hypno: which version of oracle?
RJarett
wait.gui oem? are you on 9i?

hypno
10g i think.
ganderson
I think 10G supports the web interface
hypno
the remote server have 10g solaris/sparc. i am on os x/intel.
ganderson: yeah, but it requires configuration which isnt done, and i have zero experience with that.
RJarett
ask your dba what port the web interface (emctl dbconsole) is on
ganderson
hypno: yea..if you have shell access to the database server, you could run: emctl start dbconsole
and then you could connect to it via web browser (generally https://serverHost:1158/em )
if you don't have shell access, then yea...I think you'll need to either get a windows machine or run a virtual machine with windows
hypno
i have done that, but it complains about missing property files and directories. is it sufficient to mkdir/touch relevant files only?
no, i have root access.
ganderson
hmm
what kind of files/directories is it complaining about?
RJarett
you need to install the whole repo
its an ordeal
hypno
/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dlx_hfd1/sysman/config/emd.properties
like that.
RJarett
pickup sql developer. free from oracle
its a simple java based tool.
depends what level of access you need
hypno
i just want to browse the database, look what is inside and the meta info about some tables, etc.
ganderson
oh
RJarett
sql developer
ganderson
then you could use SQL Developer
hypno
ie, oracle types, etc.
RJarett
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
hypno
Alright, ok. thanks guys. i'll have a look at that.
ganderson
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html
hypno ^
hypno: also, if you need to setup dbconsole in the future, give this a read --> http://www.akadia.com/services/ora_dbconsole.html
RJarett
the dbconsole needs to be licensed
ganderson
oh woop...that's right :x
RJarett
so if you dont have it setup, you probably didnt pay the mafia for the license
stede
how i can create a job on 0:01 each day (am) ... if i want to define a start date for a job oracle always adds the session TZ but it should use UTC which are used on the server
RJarett
if you did pay the insanely expensive pricing for it, you would have it working ;) or else you would have wasted ALOT of money
hypno
heh
RJarett
stede: cron ;)
ganderson
stede: ^
stede
lol ... or wake up ech day and call it manually :-P
sure
RJarett
i hate using dbms_job and dbms_scheduler
ganderson
(Action) has never used it, personally
hypno
i'm surprised everything is so easily available from oracle.
RJarett
hypno: they have more lawyers than your company has employees
hypno
arguably the top notch database in the world is just a download away?
RJarett
if they think they can get money from you, they will
hypno
heh
ganderson
hypno: yea...you could install the full blown oracle system with all the bells and whistles for free
RJarett
"for one time use prototyping, and can not be used for developing applications which will eb used in production"
ganderson
hypno: the second you use it for business, they'll come after ya if you haven't paid :P
RJarett
they come after you even when you do pay
their sales side is evil
hypno
yeah, but i mean, how many people dont use it without oracle not knowing?
RJarett
its good for them
like OS piracy
people learn it
they recommend it
they eventually get their company licensed
especially when they need support or something crashes
hypno
yeah, i guess.
matlab works in a similiar way too.
RJarett
i have to say, dbms_scheduler in 11g is pretty impressive. easier to pull off odd complex times than cron can do
like 2th tuesday after the first friday of each month.
screw matlab
i hope R puts them under
ganderson
(Action) snickers
RJarett
alot of peopel are working to get R better integrated into oracle. but all the effort has been to R and oracles datamodeler which is insanely expensive
and R connectivity via ODBC
Im working on R over OCI or JDBC
more complex datatypes
better performance
mgolisch
seems to be nic related
hypno
R, the stat langauge?
RJarett
yes
mgolisch
have a high number of droped rx pakets on the heartbeat interfaces
RJarett
In my perfect world, I would have R + JDBC or OCI + Oracle Spatial or ESRI SDE/IMS in perfect harmony
mgolisch
hali: you still there?
hali
aigh
hypno
RJarett: are you in the finance bizz?
RJarett
not exactly
we deal with some financial companies
Im in weather. Processing data against retail and energy data
hypno
i see.
RJarett
what about you?
hypno
i am a fluid dynamics student actually, heh.
but i do consulting on the side.
RJarett
ahh
mgolisch
hali: i seem to be dropping lots of pakets on the heartbeat nics, but not on the others
hali
dodgy cable?
RJarett
screwed up teaming?
mgolisch
it says rx_discard_fw in ethtool
so i asume the firmware drops them
RJarett
odd
mgolisch
maybe i should try updating the drivers
hali
mode=active-backup
hm
kingping
Hello folks
mgolisch
its bnx2 1.79
kingping
Oracle Database 11g is shipped with APEX, true/false ?
RJarett
theres a bug in the drivers of bnx i think
you running 2.6.25 or later?
hali
kingping: true, but it's unconfigured by default.. not a aprt of dbca
mgolisch
2.6.18-128.el5
RJarett
hmmm
mgolisch
its rhel 5.3
kingping
hali: aprt ?
hali
5.5 has the fix
kingping: part
mgolisch
uarghs but oracle is allready installed
hali
so?
RJarett
you can add it on
mgolisch
thats going to be a mess upgraing the os now
hali
you can still do an up2date
RJarett
just download the latest version
hali
or just do the driver separate
mgolisch
i might just try getting the nic module only
maybe that is enough
yeah ill try that
kingping
hali: Is it hard to configure, or it's better to have a different installation ?
Oh, I think I found that http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/install/apexinst/apexinst.htm
Thanks.
hali
kingping: not hard really
mgolisch
bnx2: eth0 NIC Copper Link is Up, 1000 Mbps full duplex, receive & transmit flow control ON << whats that recievw and transmit flow control?
it doesnt show up in the messages for the non heartbeat interfaces
maybe thats causing my problems?
anyways think iam going to update the driver first
thx so far
karlb
I'm running Oracle 11g on Windows and I am experiencing frequent but unreproducible crashes ("OracleServiceORCL terminated unexpectedly"). Nothing gets written to the alert log right before crashing and the problem occurs on two different machines. Does anyone have some hints where I can start looking for clues?
RJarett
trc files
karlb
RJarett: Thanks, there really are some .trc files with the crash timestamp. That should give me a point to start.
RJarett
pastebin the latest
karlb
RJarett, which of the trc files? The orcl_ora*?
RJarett
do you know how to look at the date on a file?
karlb
Yes, but there are multiple ones with the same date
I'm afraid they were generated on the startup after the crash...
RJarett
look through the list for anything before the crash
karlb
And the ones directly before also share the same date
RJarett
you cant see time?
go download cygwin
work in a real shell, not explorer
karlb
I'm have to work on the machine. I would have chosen Linux myself. But even explorer shows time (at least up to a minute)
RJarett
then you should be able to see what the trace was around the crash time
what do the event viewer logs show?
karlb
It looks like it wasn't modified right before the crash. Here's the latest trc, which doesn't seem to contain only startup info: http://karlb.pastebin.com/NWCd4Xwq
RJarett
i dont care about the latest
karlb
I'll try to get a good trc. That might take a few minutes.
RJarett
you can have services call a program when they crash
you should make it log something or bvetter time
