hi
f00li5h
is ther a way to have sql develoepr display results of a query pivoted?
so that i have rows right to left, and columns top to bottom?
Xgc
f00li5h: SQL Developer can be used on a monitor that's rotated 90 degrees.
f00li5h
I think you may have misunderstood the question.
Xgc
The SQL language doesn't quite support that concept, unless you wish to dynamically build your statement based on the # of rows found.
f00li5h
I want the *tool* to display the table pivoted.
i don't want to do sql crazyness, i want the application to show me the results in a different way
RJarett
11g has pivot built in
fool dont expect it to
f00li5h
why not?
mysql and pg manage it, in their command line sql shells
Xgc
f00li5h: I don't believe it does, currently.

f00li5h
select * from items \G
RJarett
you and your mysql and pg can go fu*k yourself
f00li5h
silly of me to expect software to have useful features
RJarett
i have hundred billion row tables. i should expect my sql app to do something really stupid for me
which would destroy the box its running on
f00li5h
it's just *display*
it does not change the query at all...
Xgc
f00li5h: MySQL does not do what you describe.
f00li5h
sure it does.
RJarett
go away and use mysql
query output should not be changed like that
it changes what the data means
Xgc
f00li5h: The form you're describing '\G' is just single values per line of the output, not rows shown right to left. Each row is shown in a separate paragraph, in a sense.
RJarett
he just wants row as a table output?
Xgc
[20:48] <f00li5h> so that i have rows right to left, and columns top to bottom?
f00li5h
http://paste.scsys.co.uk/44898
it's the same with one row ...
Xgc
f00li5h: Right. There are no rows right to left in that form.
f00li5h
yes, you are technically right...
Xgc: that's why it's "like", not the same as...
also, sql developer is a GUI application, so it's fair to expect it to be more grapical
RJarett
dude, seriously. shut the fu*k up
f00li5h
RJarett: go have a coffee... or get laid or something.
RJarett
you want a bubbly interface that hides stupidity, connect excel to access
f00li5h
i just want to control how my results are displayed ...
but thanks for the help
RJarett
sql developer. not sql changed from what you ran
Xgc
f00li5h: It's really not a report building tool.

RJarett
there is a way to make oracle print how you want
f00li5h
it's not a report, it's a select * from ... where pk= ...
Xgc
It can be done procedurally, but I'm sure he just wants some button to push.
f00li5h
yes, a button.
RJarett
its a rather simple plsql
f00li5h
the print_table procedure I found online is 126 lines ...
i'd not call that simple...
RJarett
well, one mans simple is another dumbasses hard
stfu
use the pivot function, or print_table
or do use another db or tool to connect to it
sql developer is just a tool for people not smart enough to use sqlplus
f00li5h
well, sqlplus's output is bullsh*t for this table too
i get 3 terminals worth of headings... with data splashed randomly between them
RJarett
omfg
you are dumb
hey, im a moron and i cant change my column formats.
I cant change line length. or wrapping
if its not click and slide its too complex
f00li5h
you're right, it's totally unreasonable to expect a helpful user interface on a database tool
RJarett
#1 its free. #2 there are MANY ways to get what you want. #3 they all change what you actually queried. and #4 the key to a query is to preserve the data returned. what you want does not
go bi**h to ANSI and tell them to change the sql spec.
f00li5h
i want the same data, *displayed* a different way
that's all i'm asking for
RJarett
sql developer is not a report generation tool
f00li5h
it's *still* not a report
zasz
RJarett has issues f00li5h
f00li5h
zasz: get out! you have to be kidding me...
zasz
lol
arrogance seems to be a pretty common trait in oracle people
jay321
how can i assign dba permissions to a user?
nm found it
mgolisch
ORA-04030: Zu wenig Prozessspeicher fur Versuch 800 Bytes zuzuweisen (kgsp-heap,kglss)
PSP0 (ospid: 15250): terminating the instance due to error 4030
what does that mean?
not enough memory?
happened to have some other oracle processes die with similar messages, i wonder what is wrong
dammit
i dont understand why i get those ora 04030/04031
something must be configured wrong or so
deebo
in plain sql (not pl/sql) how do i create a cursor as a select query?
like `var my_cursor refcursor;`, how do i select into that cursor
usn_work
~> oerr ora 4031
04031, 00000, "unable to allocate %s bytes of shared memory (\"%s\",\"%s\",\"%s\",\"%s\")"
/ *Cause: More shared memory is needed than was allocated in the shared
/ pool.
/ *Action: If the shared pool is out of memory, either use the
/ DBMS_SHARED_POOL package to pin large packages,
/ reduce your use of shared memory, or increase the amount of
/ available shared memory by increasing the value of the
/ initialization parameters SHARED_POOL_RESERVED_SIZE and
/ SHARED_POOL_SIZE.
/ If the large pool is out of memory, increase the initialization
/ parameter LARGE_POOL_SIZE.
mgolisch!
mgolisch
i have automatic memory management enabled
is that the problem?
usn_work
not for itself, but you can specify a minimum for a pool in automatic mode as well
but first you have to find out WHAT's to small
monitor the pools, find the culprit first
mgolisch
Shared Pool 3584
Buffer Cache 768
Large Pool 128
this seems to be quite low values
i told the automatic memory management to use up to 50gb
guess ill have to read into that whole memory management stuff a bit more to understand this better

Using Oracle 10G on a stand alone server with 8GB Ram, using local disks for the db. DB is about 150GB. We got a whole virtualization based on vmware (ent+ license) plan to move most of our servers to ESX's. What are the drawbacks of moving my stand alone 10G into that same storage and making it a vm?
usn_work
What OS do you use, vmnew
vmnew
rhel4
usn_work
A general drawback is the bad IO performance of vmdk's. If possible, map in your LUNs directly
On Linux, keep your time drifting under control
vmnew
got it.
usn_work
To be sure, do a test series on VM, virtualization won't be faster than native hardware. :)
A real hypervisor is better tahn VMware, like Xen/Oracle VM
mator
usn_work, what is oracle vm?
morning
usn_work
they have about 10% CPU/RAM performance panlty, but way better IO behaviour. But it's an infrastructure decision
mator, it's Xen by Oracle
vmnew, VM "plays jackstraws" with ressources ;) Dynamically re-scheduling CPU and RAM. This has impact. But to be sure, test it, maybe on a smaller machine, develop a feeling for the platform first.
vmnew
k, will do... 'cause there is no doubt that the benefits are great. ie, no hardware issues, better connectivity with other servers (same storage/switch) and such
usn_work
yeah, no discussion about that
Do you have a choice, or do you have to use VMware? Did you consider Xen?
stede
how to move mount-points of fk-connections in data-modeler? it puts 2-3 connections on one point o_O
vmnew
usn_work: vmware, that choice is above me
usn_work
Maybe you want to look at Oracle VM as well, depends on what you want to run on other virtual machines
vmnew
k, thanks
usn_work

mgolisch
is there any explanation for sporadic slowness?
queries take forever to execute all out of sudden
if i reboot my cluster nodes it works again
usn_work
mgolisch, does the execution plan change?
http://www.usn-it.de/index.php/2010/03/08/oracle-how-to-create-a-good-execution-plan/
mgolisch
iam looking into that currently
its just that everything seems to take forever
and the cpus are mostly idle
i see no iowait either or high load on the storage
mator
vmstat / iostat
mgolisch
and i have another weird problem
o2net kills one of my nodes regularaly
mator
mgolisch, move off from o2net ?
mgolisch
it seems to be related to one application one user started, hard to believe that some sql query could make one of the nodes not respond to the heartbeat anymore
usn_work
BAAG
Battle Agains Any Guess
"believe" is not the question
mgolisch
mator: you mean not to use ocfs?
stede
i import some data from csv file, there is one row wich has dat type "varchar(1 char)" and i can't import "a" from the csv-file. sqldeveloper tells me, that there is not enough space in the target col. why? another row with "varchar(4 char)" and can import "abcd" without problems ?! whats wrong?
mgolisch
we currently use it to store exported data and csv files to be imported, thought about maybe just mounting a nfs share on both nodes on that mountpoint and see if it works better that way without ocfs2
mator
mgolisch, i thought that o2net is a network operator =)

Greetings gentlemen
I set up a listener.ora file , here it is : http://pastebin.com/eY26NzEq , (i'm really not used to oracle on windows), when i start "lsnrctl start" none service are started up, it seems the listener.ora file is not read
well i really don't understand , i used the Oracle Net assistant (just discovered that in the menu) and redefine a listener with that tool and now it works
stede

if i expand the col dataformat to voarchar(4 char) it works, but not below *confsed*
funny ... set to varchar(4) .. import data and then reset to varchar(1) works ... crazy
kingping
Hello folks
usn_work
hello
kingping
Do one need to write scripts for RHEL to run Oracle 11g on startup, like ones in init.d ?
usn_work
depends
kingping
like using $ emctl start dbconsole
usn_work
if you are using RAC or RAC one or such, you needn't
kingping
Newp, just a single instance and db.
usn_work
single instance, start $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart and dbshut
in a small init.d wrapping script
kingping
I see. Thanks.
Just heard there's also a Restarter app which probably comes with Grid.
Restarts abnormally terminated modules and an instance, kind of.
usn_work

hi, question: schema onwer is xxx, but owner of the table in that schema is yyy, now how do i find what and where is yyy, if its not a scheme?
RJarett
another person cant "own" a table in xxx schema
Reign1
CREATE OR REPLACE SYNONYM mpcs.rm FOR designmaster.rm; <--- i dont get what designmaster is as its not a schema
RJarett
synonym rm is owned by mpcs
it isnt in designmasters schema
it is just a pointer
designmaster is a schema
select * from dba_users
Reign1
ok, will try, as when i looked to users/roles list, i didnt find designmaster, thats why i asked this
RJarett
theres cases where oracle will let you create synonyms on crap that doesnt exist
but i bet this one does
Reign1
nope
designmaster is not in select * from dba_users
RJarett
sucks to be you ;)
Reign1
:)
RJarett
select owner, object_type from dba_objects where name = 'RM';
dogmeat
success story: installed Perl DBD::Oracle on CentOS release 4.2 (Final) x86_64 with Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
i ran the gamut of peculiar error messages from all kinds of misconfigurations, but nothing google did not have tech notes on
RJarett
interesting
dogmeat
RJarett, which?
i could write a really great how to guide
RJarett
too bad dozens of others already have
and you did it on an unsupported db
which there are even more guides on that version
zasz
9i ? ;/
RJarett
yes
dogmeat
no guides that i found specifically for this install. during the process many varieties of errors were encountered, and each in turn needed to be solved.
zasz
it's pretty easy to get 10g or 11g running on cent os 5.4
why didnt you do that
avaia
or install it on wine, that's the future
dogmeat
our production server is running the older version and has not been migrated. as a matter of course of running the business, the focus has been on $$ not keeping s/w up to date
