what's wrong with TO_CHAR(dt.time||' 00:00:00', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'), where dt.time is actually a varchar that says "2010-10-02" (I know, that is a date and not the time. I didn't make the db)

Does anyone have any pros or cons for setting up oracle databases on Windows vs. Linux?
Ramen
no idea
can I do something like insert into test(f1,f2) values (seq.nextval, (select * from t2))
[yop]
i make a up, i need this file: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Y3j87NQxgnYJ:sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do%3Fassetkey%3Durn:cds:docid:1-21-140686-02-1+140686-02-1&cd=1&hl=fr&ct=clnk&client=mozilla but it's not possible with a free account oracle (it's a patch from sun os, who have changed this license)
(if a perso have access and can upload)
pm me if you can upload this
DiscordianUK
No one is gonna pirate that for you
Please do not offend us by asking]
[yop]
it's a blade computer at less than 100 euros, you think a person can pay for an account at sun ?
for me it's not "pirate"
s/sun/oracle/g
DiscordianUK
You are asking for someone to do something illegal
[yop]
yes but it's not for sharing the file over the net, it's for personal use, it's why i purpose to private me
DiscordianUK
I'd stop
If you mention this again I'll involve the freenode IRCOps

[yop]
you are an operator from oracle ? kick me if it's a large problem for you a question about sharing a patch, why you said "I'll involve the freenode IRCOps" i speak about oracle not freenode
Trengo
is he packeting you?
not likely is it

hi
sytse
whut, how can there be INTERMITTENT errors like 'OracleException: The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client' (from .NET code: Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleInit.Initialize() +288)
dsdel
if the provider is not compatible with the oracle client :D
sytse
um
no
because it does work most of the time
but sometimes, it doesn't
(that's what I meant with 'intermittent' of course)
dsdel
different databases you connect to? different oracle client/databases installed? perhaps an environment mixup?
xiaoshen
hi all^
i can't open my OEM , the web browser said the page can't b displayed, anyone can tellme what went wrong?
dsdel
xiaoshen: checked if it is started?
deebo
can i somehow easily swap a global temporary table to a regular table?
don't have the schema for it
xiaoshen
dsdel yea u r rite it's stopped, i have started it^
usn_work
g'morning
alostale
hi
when i try to obtain an oracle connection it always takes more than 30s
I can reproduce it with this java code
time = System.currentTimeMillis();
Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:oborcl", prop);
long connTime = System.currentTimeMillis() - time;
i've put ojdbc5_g.jar to get logs
everything with level FINEST
the problem is that the first line in that log is after this 30s
this means they are spent somewhere before calling the ojdbc
any idea of where it could be?
hali
reverse dns?
hm, localhost
mator
alostale, do you have localhost entry in /etc/hosts ?
alostale, and what in your /etc/nsswitch.conf
alostale
mator, let me check
hali
mdns4 is known to fu*k stuff like that up if you have that in nsswitch.conf, ubuntu typically does
alostale
mator, I have localhost i both files
mator
alostale, pastebin /etc/nsswitch.conf somewhere
and /etc/hosts too
alostale

mator, http://dpaste.com/206033/

hali
not sure if it's relevent or not, but having the listener listen on 127.1 is fairly bad practice, stick your hostname under the system ip and make put that in listener.ora
and in your connection string use the system ip
not localhost
mator
alostale, is it any faster if you change jdbc connection string @localhost to @127.0.0.1 ?
alostale
mator, let me check
mator
alostale, if not, then it's probably wrong configuration with your machine / listener
so try to follow hali advice
alostale
mator, changing localhost to ip doesn't change anything
I'll try hali approach, problem I'm not dba for that machine :(
thanks
balek
hi i have a question please i have a rac oracle i lost votink disk and i have not a backup of this disk is it easy to create a new voting disk and add . I use oracle windows 10 G thanks
mator
balek, it's not exactly clear from you description what is your problem, but usually voting disk do not have backups
balek
i have both ocr disk and voting disk on an ocfs partition i don't know how i can do for create a new physical disk on this partition
xvit
hi guys, I want to pass the OCA exams. I know there are 2 exams to take the certification, one is SQL fundamentals and second is Administration I. Can I take both exams in the same day? or if not and I pass the first exam, what is the deadline for the second exam ?
mator
balek, what happened with your old voting disk?
xvit, there's no oracle representatives on this channel (yet)
xvit
ok thanx
balek
mator : i lost my voting disk and when i type : crsctl check crs i have css appears heatly , cannot communicate with crs and cannot communicate with evm. i see the service crs is down
usn_work
balek, you asked this question days before, and I told you that if you lost your voting disk without having backed it up (what would have been advisable) you have to re-initialize the CRS
mator
balek, do you have still shared storage (raw partition or clustered filesystem ocfs/vxfs) working ?
balek
usn_work : i restore the ocr disk now just voting disk is not restore
mator
usn_work, what the idea to backup voting disk ? :)
usn_work
of course, since the voting disk does no automatic mackup in 10g
mator
usn_work, it's always possible to re-create new if old have been lost
usn_work
but it would have been good to do it manually
balek
mator : i try to recreate a new voting disk but it not want
mator
balek, I asked you a question
balek, second, read manuals on how to re-create your voting disk
usn_work
http://www.pythian.com/news/832/how-to-recreate-the-oracle-clusterware-voting-disk/
so tell me that this is easy
mator, the idea is to avoid all this crap
balek
mator : i read the documentation i try this crsctl add css votedisk b:\cdata\ora\voting - force after i see : crsctl query css votedisk i have : 0. 0 b:\cdata\ora\voting
but when i try to restart crs service it can't
sorry if it's not the good manipulation
mator
balek, I can't help with crs/css and voting disk troubleshooting behind this point, since I don't have RAC installed
balek
mator : ok no problem thanks
usn_work : if i add a new voting disk with crsctk add ... after it work no ?
usn_work
no
you need your node configuration
and this is LOST
you have to recreate it
re create. Create again. Understood this term?
the voting disk itself is just an empty structure, it has to be filled with nodes, etc.
balek
usn_work : yes ok i understand now the voting disk is the quorum the node1 and node2 can see it one is down no ?
both write on this disk to tell i am up no ?
usn_work
the quorum is made out of the presence in the voting disk and the heartbeat over interconnect
one heartbeat in the voting file, one over network
(at least)
its mainly used for grouping decisions, if you are splitting large clusters, for example 5 nodes splitted 2:3: Which part should survive?
(this decision is taken by workload, which is noted down to the voting disk for example)
balek, understood?
balek
usn_work : yes i understand now
very thanks for there informations
usn_work
how long is that RAC down now? 2 WEEKS?
so balek, do yourself a favour, and reinstall the clusterware, and take a backup next time
balek
usn_work : it's a test rac not the rac production i try to make a mirror of ocr, voting and asm on the test rac
usn_work : yes i try to delete the cluster and install but when i try to install i have more errors (when i deltee rac cluster with tool oracle it not delete all data on the server ) i can see the service is not delete on the registry database windows i can see more information of oracle i think on the windows the remove oracle rac is not very good
i think the best solution is to create a new windows server and install a new rac oracle test :)
usn_work
it should be easy to find how to remove oracle from Windows. Never did it, since I prefer Unixoid systems
mator
how it is possible to get lost voting disk (if it is not an operator error) anyway, if they usually sitting on a (shared) raid volumes...
balek, http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/ManualOracleUninstall.php
balek, there's a lot of guides online on google "oracle uninstallation guide windows" even from oracle.com site
usn_work
mator, it's easy: You can corrupt it, or drop your LUN on the SAN ...
and MY Test-RAC has only one Voting Disk as well
balek
mator : it's possible but i not use raid or backup for the test rac for the production yes but not the test
mator
usn_work, last time I've dropped our luns with veritas cluster voting disks, nodes still was working ok (and there's still was network inter-connect), but then attached them back without any problems :)
balek, it's strongly adviced to have voting disk location on a fail-safe/secure location, i.e. over some redudant raid configuraions
veritas cluster wants at least 3 or more luns for it's voting disks
usn_work
yeah, I don't think it's a problem to take it off and on, as long as no status changes happen in the cluster. Restarting one node might change this ;)
(Action) is out for lunch
balek
very thanks for your help i reinstall rac with the mator documentation
very thanks
stede
hi
mator
stede, hello
stede
what is a clean way to keep rows from a small table instead of deleting them (for history/log reasons)... write a trigger which copies the row into a history/log table and adds the current time?
because "instead of" triggers dont work on tables, either i can change the table while the trigger executes
milan
is there a way to see the values of bind variables that a specific cursor uses?
usn_work
hi milan - yes, perform a 10043 level 12 trace of this session
milan
um ok, i've never preformed a trace
usn_work
milan, http://www.usn-it.de/index.php/2009/08/12/oracle-tracing-of-another-session/
oops, 10046 level 12, typo I see
milan
i wonder if dba would be upset if i did that :)
hali
there is a view you can query as well
usn_work
hali, huh?
where? I need it
hali
v$sql_bind_capture
not sure if you can tie it to a session easily though
milan
that's neat
usn_work
cool stuff
hyphenex
ok, it appears I've stuffed everything up.. can anyone recommend a simple distro/release to have Oracle server installed with php & symfony all talking nice with as little effort as possible?
usn_work
hyphenex, all certified Linuxes should do, RHEL or SLES
hyphenex
SLES?
usn_work
suse linux enterprise server
hyphenex
but they cost money :P
usn_work
CentOS
its like RHEL
hyphenex
:) I was trying Ubuntu 10.04, but nothing has worked nice, so I gave up
usn_work
but without going for a certified platform like RHEL/CentOS or SLES you will have to build workarounds all day
Using uncertified platforms and complain?
hyphenex
CentOS is free and certified?
usn_work
Its free and uncertified, but 99,999% identical to CentOS.
Its free and uncertified, but 99,999% identical to RHEL
:)
hyphenex
ok, cool. I might go that. Thanks :)
usn_work
you're welcome
hyphenex
usn_work: and there's a nice guide! :P http://am3n.profusehost.net/index.php?id=45
usn_work
my bank account is ... :)
hyphenex
seriously thanks usn_work
usn_work

BLZbubba
hypno: sles == suse, kind of like a german red hat
you are definitely better off with centos or ubuntu imo
ah he's gone, doh
mgolisch
and as its owned by novell atm its not realy german anymore
usn_work
is it a problem to be a german product? ;)
from Linux point of view, SuSE is kind of PITA, I agree. But the combination with Oracle is realy good IMHO
BLZbubba
cool
how does it compare with oracle's distro or rhel? we use oracle on rhel here since it is "officially" supported
from what i understand
usn_work
RHEL and Oracle Linux is the same
even the red hat is still present
SLES is officially supported as well, RHEL and OEL too.
SuSE is different - they try to make configuration easier their own way. For many cases it works, for special ones you still have to touch the (standard) config files
but a mixture of config tools and editing the files manually may cause trouble in unexpected corners
BLZbubba, on the upside, there's lots of stuff for Oracle on SuSE on the net
Ramen
Oracle® Application ServerForms and Reports Services ... when it writes stuff out what user/pass does it use?
k0rupted
so I'm a little new to oracle, how can I move my database on disk? trying to find some documentation on it... hoping its as simple as it would be with mysql or postgres. Anyone be able to get me out? link?
Oracle XE btw...
RJarett
move it how?
k0rupted
my root is full, I need to move it to another drive
RJarett
shut it down
move it
rizzo
if you provide the same path
RJarett
startup mount
ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<old_full_path>' TO '<new_full_path>';
and do that for the temp files and all to
but if its a non windows os, you should just make a symlink
rizzo
if you can use the same path, you can symlink or just mount the new drive to where the old files were after you move them
k0rupted
yeah its centos
rizzo
then you don't need to rename them in the database
k0rupted
ok that works
thanks
rizzo
data file locations are stored in the controlfile
good luck
