does anyone know of a plsql function or procedure to handle importing a csv - like LOAD DATA INFILE - but that will accept a bound clob or such as the data source ?
uberjar
is oracle going to put the JRE behind a pay-wall like it's doing with all it's other formerly free software ?
dsdel
is mysql still free or is it not? :P
uberjar
for now..
haha
dsdel
ye you need to pay now for opensolaris on cd, but the project itself is still free
uberjar
no it's not
you can't download it for free
you have to buy a $90 support contract
each week oracle puts something else behind a pay wall
dsdel
http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Main/downloads

uberjar
this week it was firmware
"In a somewhat surprising move (and without any notification to customers), Oracle shut down public access to firmware downloads. I learned this the hard way when I contacted Oracle customer service almost two weeks ago. Yes, it took 13 days for me to get access to the firmware download for systems under the standard warranty (i.e. less than a year old)."
oh I'm sorry.. I stand corrected
I thought they were charging for that download
dsdel
no, for the cd shipping you have to pay
you are nearly paying for every cd shipping atm - but yes it is a little bit expensive for just 'shipping cd'
and no - I don't want to defend oracle :)
I love the oracle database - more I am not using from oracle (mysql naturally on webservers)
but mysql is fu*ked database and in general no one should use it when there is something free like pgsql
trying to switch currentl hehe
f}y
er
}y
uberjar
what do you think about the new wave of "no sql" dbs ?
dsdel
lol mei charmapping failed :D
in times there are ORM for nearly every language - nothing :>
uberjar
for most web apps I've worked on I don't generally need realtional features
I just need a big acid hashmap in the sky
I don't even need transactions most of the time.
dsdel
no you don't - but you need always performance
uberjar
yep
dsdel
and this is one of the biggest lacks of mysql - for small data ok it is nice but getting into problem starting up from some 100mb
uberjar
you need good performance at a small scale and a large scale
right
you end up having to disable all of mysql's features
dsdel
and recovery... nearly not existing :D
uberjar
I'm growing found of these new distributed databases
based around amazon's dynamo
they do enough for me to get by at small scale... and then at large scale they're incredible
the one I like the most is a project called Riak
dsdel
i'm not very into this currently
:)
uberjar
yeah it's uh brand new stuff.. just for fun.,. I don't get to work with it on the job =/
but I see lots of potential
I think oracle's database niche is shrinking
same with mysql.
hopefully this won't cause oracle to do anything too stupid
dsdel
hehe

EEST morning!
dsdel
hi cofeineSunshine
needa get to work - later

ygip
If i have nvarchar2 field as primary key will my table be arranged like a dictionary according to this field?
usn_work
huh?
tables are never ordered
new rows will be inserted wherever the DB will find space for it

ygip
arent they ordered on disk according to primary key?
ok
usn_work
there is a "index organized table" available
but the usability of a varchar as PK is limited
ygip
yea, I agree varchar as PK is not exactly not notch, but it's how they made this. Making a conversion from this system and want to be able to resume the etl operation if something breaks down. So basically something like this SELECT * FROM TABLE ORDER BY pk_varchar_field ,
and resuming would be something like SELECT * FROM TABLE WHERE pk_varchar_field > 'stored_checkpoint_value' ORDER BY pk_varchar_field
is it even possible to use '>' operator on varchar field?
usn_work
yes
but there are NLS dependent rules for their resolution
ygip
umh didnt get that, you mean it isnt accurate unless i configure it?
usn_work
nope, but you have to make sure to have 100% the same NLS environment to get the same results
think about language/region dependent sort orders etc.
ygip
ahh I'll have that in mind
I think source qand destination systems are completely alike comfigurationwise
usn_work
I can't afford jsut "thinking" this ;) I usually have to check
ygip
Wel basically, I am inserting into a new table and the old system I am importing from will not change. I wont need to do any select (hopefully) on the destination. So most important is just that my selects on the source system are consistent
KeiKurono
can i redirect standard error to a file when using @script.sql; command
?
usn_work
one of my DB servers is rather idle on CPU, RAM usage and disk IO. But if I want to have a new session (dedicated server) I have to wait about 50 seconds for a prompt / response
any idea where to look for a cause?
mh, looks like the listener...
Trengo
listener? i thought it was dedicated
usn_work
and?
how to get a dedicated session without a listener?
shared server is with dispatcher
but a IPC session is slow too - so it can't be the listener
sh*t
Trengo
linux? solaris?
usn_work
AIX
5.3
64bit
we are far below any process- or session limit as well
33 sessions connected, over 800 are possible
hali
usn_work: something as simple as name lookups?
usn_work
mh, maybe - but for IPC connects like "sqlplus / as sysdba"?
KeiKurono
they keep sendind me stuff like varchar2(100 char).. is that legal at least?
usn_work
hali, you are right
one of two DNS servers is dead
thanks alot for the hint
question is, why does it affect the IPC stuff?
Trengo
remove it from /etc/resolv.conf and it shouldnt, at all
usn_work
yeah, that's what I did :P
Trengo
check if you have localhost/127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts
usn_work
it's there
thanks alot for the hint
question is, why does it affect the IPC stuff?
Trengo
i dont know aix, does it use nsswitch?
it shouldn't, at all
usn_work
I don't know where to configure the "nsswitch" functions in AIX, but it seems as if the system would prefer HOSTS entries over DNS
Trengo
in /etc/nsswitch.conf if its there
there's a line says hosts: files dns
usn_work
would have been to easy
hali
usn_work: populating the machine value in v$session as well
usn_work
uh
but a good source for what has to be in /etc/hosts ;) great
dsdel
RA-01519: error while processing file '?/rdbms/admin/dtxnspc.bsq' near line 5
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-19502: write error on file "/opt/oracle/archdb/system/archdb_undo_02.dbf",

n1!
i love customers which forget a '0' when partitionating...
usn_work
:)
mator
dsdel, can you please explain?
dsdel
mator: this error comes up when there is not enough disk space
mator: the customer done a 50gb partition instead of 500 and I didn't check :)
cmug
Omg, Grid Control 11g!
mator
dsdel, k, thanks :)
dsdel
mator: but I was first like 'WTF?' :D
Viper-7
any ‘gurus’ around? getting a phantom ora-600 :/
Trengo
call support
Viper-7
just doing some after hours research
dsdel
Viper-7: check the alertlog- there is soemthing like:
ora-00600 occured blafoobla [number] [number]...
Viper-7
[3][1][][][][][]
dsdel
the first [number] can indicated you into the direction of the problem
Viper-7
is about the best ive gotten from it so far
dsdel
only 3? :D
Viper-7
haha
dsdel
check metalink/google for 600 [3] thing
Viper-7
i swear i’ve isolated it to a heavily called query possibly affected by a bug fixed in 10.1.0.2 with CONNECT BY, and we’re running 10.1.0.1...
but im not the DBA, and i’d love something to back up this hunch heh, as they arent keen on disrupting the live database anytime soon
glen1
how do I unlock the secret tony stark feature?
freakolowsky
lo
one quickie ... been googling, but can't get a clean solution ... i need a list of non-system usernames from dba_users ... any ideas about what that query would look like?
stede
is there an errorlog-file for the instantclient? always my website has a insert/delete query, the httpd stops working :-/
how can i set the field "last number" in a sequence?
RJarett
what do you want it to do when it hits that #?
alter sequence foo maxvalue ########## [no]cycle;
Viper-7
RJarett: what does it do on nocycle ? o.O
RJarett
Specify NOCYCLE to indicate that the sequence cannot generate more values after reaching its maximum or minimum value. This is the default.
Specify CYCLE to indicate that the sequence continues to generate values after reaching either its maximum or minimum value. After an ascending sequence reaches its maximum value, it generates its minimum value. After a descending sequence reaches its minimum, it generates its maximum value.
Viper-7
so generate errors i guess
RJarett
yep
Viper-7
RJarett: how good are you on internals?
RJarett
pretty good
Viper-7
im getting a phantom ora-600 [3][1][][], seems to crop up under heavy db load, trying to track it down
RJarett
pastebin the full error and the trc generated at the time
im pushing hundreds of gb of change/processing a night. not one i see regularly
Viper-7
theres a bug fixed in 10.1.0.2 in CONNECT BY that supposedly throws the error, and we’re running 10.1.0.1 heh
we’re nothing close to that.
RJarett
yeah .1 is pretty bad
its really nothing to upgrade to .4
well i cant say that but its better than the alternative
we had alot of issues with .1
we are on .3 and .4 for the most part
Viper-7
i’m not the DBA, but i need proof to convince them to take the live database offline for the upgrade
RJarett
make a copy of it
upgrade the copy
see how it does
Viper-7
we’ve looked at every log we can find and cant get any more detail, trying to find out exactly what i need to get to get that proof heh
well its hard to simulate the kind of load we get
RJarett
well the easy thing to tell them is... "we were unsupported by oracle within 4 months of installing .1 because it was so bad and buggy"
Viper-7
“we’ve been running it for a long time now and never had any problem” was the offical response i got from the ex-uni professor oracle expert guru dba today
RJarett
ohh god
Viper-7
im convinced its load related, but i need proof :’(
RJarett
Uni professors w/ databases are typically the biggest dumbfu*ks in the world
Viper-7
tell me about it
RJarett
no real experience outside of their cj date book
Viper-7
i took the job for the chance to get paid to learn oracle
i’ve learned bugger all :/
stede
RJarett: this done the job: alter sequence .. increment by ..
ty
Viper-7
so what was that log file you were talking about ?
trc ?
RJarett
cd $ORACLE_HOME/../../admin/$ORACLE_SID/bdump/ ; ls -ltra *.trc | tail 10
Viper-7
oh, i didnt mention that our live clientbase (700+ sites, 300+ concurrency 24/7) is going down for up to 40 mins 3-4 times a day from this issue :/
RJarett
you can upgrade in less time than 40min
Viper-7
can you tell me roughly how long the update will take ?
heh
dsdel
hmm can anyone tell me why emca -config dbcontrol db runs on an error null [ORA-01219: database not open: queries allowed on fixed tables/views only] at dbsnmp user specification when the database is up and running?
Viper-7
and cheers for the path
dsdel
tnsping / sqlplus / as sysdba and so on work correctly
RJarett
but you can lose your data really fast with with crashes like that
dsdel
oraenv seems to fit also perfectly
RJarett
sysdba can log into a restricted or unopened DB
your database is mounted but not open i bet
dsdel
RJarett: ye but it tells you - i can login with sysdba and user
RJarett
log in as sysdba, alter database open;
« prev 1 2 3 4 next »
