still looking for a forms 3.0/oracle 8+ documentaion. Could be interesting to see.

hi. where pfile is created if I don't give path to create pfile from spfile?
it seems there is no pfile in spfile dir
spfile is in dbs dir
does it mean I have some parameter not configured?

mator
hello

vmnew
mator: meant a setup with forms 3 working on oracle8 or higher
according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Forms SQL*Forms 3 works with DB 6, and here it works with 7.3.4. Trengo said he saw it working on 8 and even someone else said he saw it working on a higher version. Any records of that? I've been googling for 3 days now..
mator
vmnew, no one will invest their time in 10+ years old technology now
sorry I can't help
vmnew
mator: thanks. Dont mean for anyone to waste _any_ time, just hope that whoever has / had this setup, could provide some documentation on it.
" Each version of Oracle Forms can connect to numerous versions of the ORACLE database and is sold and released separately from the ORACLE Database. Oracle Forms is generally forward and backward compatible with the Oracle database - for example: Oracle Forms 9 can connect to at least Oracle 8,9, 10 and 11. The database versions listed here are the primary version that was available at the time of the Form release". Forms 3 is compaitble with 6 and 7, and perha

vmnew, it was a good idea to have character forms (i.e. non GUI), in time of DOS (5.0, 6.0, 6.x and possibly start of windows 3.x and windows 95)
like it was a big success for turbo-vision character API for building text applications
but in novadays almost all they were re-written to use GUI
ofcourse it is still possibly find oracle form character versions for critical mission applications where changes don't come in so fast, like flight control, banks and nuclear reactor control
but as time passes they are re-written with GUI anyway
as like there's still a lot of unix applications which use ncurses API
vmnew
right, to rewrite costs $$, which now we do not have a lot of. Just seeking a creative solution, like removing that oracle 7.3 and using 8+
mator
but support costs $$ too, so possibly it's costs less to re-write to a newer version than to support so old tech now
it's imminent anyway...
vmnew
right, but we're already getting support for the old oracle, it wont matter if we upgrade that, $$-wise.
Trengo
today, all hospitals and health care centers run forms3 apps here in portugal
these apps were developed and deployed around the time oracle9 came out
i almost went to work for them :P
vmnew
Trengo: cool. Any of that deployments documented online?
Trengo
vmnew no not really :)
vmnew
Trengo: k, thanks. If you happen to come to any P.O.C of forms3 and oracle 8 or 9, hit me up
Trengo
vmnew do you have forms3 running? :)
and install files?
mastro
I'm installing oracle, given the home /opt/oracle, can I move the oracle database data somewhere else? the actual data of the database in another path (say /home/oracle/sids/mySid)
vmnew
Trengo: nope, got it running but not the installation files/source :)
Trengo
vmnew you could try installing oracle8, 8 exp your 7DB, 8 imp into 8, and try running forms against it
vmnew
Trengo: I will, first I need some sort of documented proof that it is possible / has been done before. I don't have a whole lot of spare time / don't like to mess too much with that current forms3 ancient setup.
usn_work
vmnew, you are asking around forms for two days now - a whole bunch of things could have been tried since yesterday
vmnew
usn_work: right, thanks, just following protocol.
usn_work
I undersatnd ;)
Trengo
afaicr, you ran forms like forms30run MYFORM.bin user/password@SID
you could have tried it already 17 times by now :P

vmnew
Trengo: nice. Will try that when I get a chance to install 8
Trengo
if it works, export and import from 9
the real issue here, to me, is forms install
vmnew
I dont need to worry about that at the moment, I hope
Trengo
if you dont have the install files, and your machine dies (and it must be pretty old by now) what then?
vmnew
I got backups of everything as is
but yeah, that old setup sucks, known fact
Trengo
you dont have a support contract i take it
vmnew
I do, it's bundled with our oracle 10G and 11
Trengo
for the 7 DB+ forms3?
vmnew
I get support for that as well, yes. Not from Oracle directly but from a support company
Trengo
ask them for the install files?
its probably on old tape though :(
vmnew
dont have them. Oracle themselves dont have it, we asked.
Trengo
they do
vmnew
nope, it's a tweaked version (almost from scratch) of forms 3
brb
Trengo
if you had a support contract, they'd give you it
since you dont, they'll sell you it
tweaked? by oracle? heh
vmnew
they dont have my version, to give or sell. Tweaked for a certain language support. Yes, almost rewritten for that, by Oracle
Trengo
and they dont have it? man thats weird
and you dont have it either?
you didnt protect your huge investment (that couldn't have been cheap)?
you==your company
vmnew
nope. But the forms part isnt my problem now, we're going to upgrade that. I just need it to work with a higher db version than 7.3
yeah, long story with this company not protecting investments
brb
Trengo
people i know were in a similar position redid their forms with dev2k
against oracle9

ygip
how do I get the SID of my oracle db system?
steelnwool
probably findable in /etc/oratab
i'd guess its orcl
cmug
ps -eaf|grep pmon
ygip
windows server
found this Select distinct sid from V$mystat;
on the net
returns 131 :S
can that be right?
i think i got it using: select sys_context('userenv','db_name') from dual;
cmug
select instance_name from v$instance;

jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:KONVDB
thanks
usr90
hello everybody
do you know if i can mix java with oracle forms?
RJarett
depends on the version
but yes
usr90
mmh ok, but before that...
RJarett
forms and reports jinitiator is java
usr90
does anyone knows if there is an API for SAP RFCs?
RJarett
you totally fail at google
like hard core shouldnt have a job fail
usr90
sorry, i meant an Oracle forms RFC API
RJarett
why would there be a need for that?
usr90
i didn't fid anything on web
RJarett
Look in your SAP RFCSDK
http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/140877/0/
http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/en/data/pdf/BCFESDE3/BCFESDE3.pdf
the rfc api: http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/de/data/pdf/BCFESDE4/BCFESDE4.pdf
usr90
RJarrett, let me check that
RJarett
the rfc java class: http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/de/data/pdf/BCFESDEG/BCFESDEG.pdf
you can use the JCO for SAP
samples galore http://www.erpgenie.com/sap-technical/java/sap-java-connector-excample-1-simple-rfc-call
new versions are web call based APIs and anything can do webcalls
usr90
yes, that's why i'm asking about java and oracle forms
cause the external system is made with oracle forms
RJarett
yes forms for the last 10 years could access java classes
usr90
good, that's nice
RJarett
what version are you on?
usr90
ecc 6.0 in SAP, in oracle forms i'm not pretty sure right now, i think is 9i
RJarett
fyi: forms 9i was desupported 2 years ago
usr90
hi again RJarett, conn problems
you told me 9i is not supported anymore, however our client doesn't want to update, is a problem we have
RJarett
just hope you dont hit a bug, or need to call oracle about it
usr90
yes, i hope that too
so, you tell me that i can use java either in 9i?
RJarett
yes
usr90
oh and btw, i have to confirm that's actually the version we're using
so maybe is not 9i as i said
ok but would be as simple as "calling" a java class? or do i have to encapsule the class ?
RJarett
depends on the API
usr90
maybe in a java bean or something like that i mean
RJarett
do you even need it
usr90
wich API?
java api?
OF API?
RJarett
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/techlisting9i.html
the sap api
read all the pages there
usr90
ok i will, thanks
ygip
i have table with unique index on column1 which is a varchar2(16 byte). I have 7 million rows. i want to make query : select * from table order by column1, and i want it to finish as fast as possible
Right now it takes forever, I havent even let it finish yet
ok took 2 minutes
guess that is survivable
rizzo
ygip: it's goign to do a full table scan regardless of your index
usn_work
maybe you can save ordering time with your index
saving CPU fuel in this case
rizzo
I don't really think so
maybe. full table scan + sort vs index full scan + table lookup for each?
usn_work
you are right. the millions of table access by index rowid will kill the costs
rizzo
I'd make sure that you really need to be doing a regular full table scan of 7M rows
hali
7 million rows isn't that much on decent hardware though
rizzo
fastest way to do something is to not do it at all
ygip
I have 12gb memory, can I adjust how it so it stores certain important indexes in my memory instead?
usn_work
indexes won't help much here
rizzo
ygip: I don't think your index plays any part here
hali
oracle will/should cache the blocks in the table
ygip
becuase it's ordering?
rizzo
ygip: does your current query plan use the index?
usn_work
indexes are a side-access into the table. If you need the whole table, they are mostly useless
ygip
I tried doing explain and it just says explain done
it doenst use any indexes right now
usn_work
ygip
okay
avaia
hali: early happy birthday, before I forget
rizzo
suck up
/msg hali but me too I love you more
OHFUUUUUU
usn_work
wtf
hali
thanks
usn_work
some things better remain private ... :)
avaia
I am just doing my part to share the love
haters gonna hate
hali
(Action) is doing the lazy sucker dba role, running sql tuning advisories and clicking implement whatever
rizzo
nice
hope you have a license for that ;)
hali
i do actually
usn_work
hali, just install a recent release, it will do that by itself ;)
hali
on a test system, avg load has gone from 6.0 to 4.0 so far... with just me playing
this is 11gR2 :)
dsdel
hali: yes, have done macro setup with my g15 :D
for ultimate lazyness!
RJarett
ohh photo talk
hali
it ran on a slower 10gr2 box which had a load of about 0.5 ... 11gr2 box with x5600's run at avg 6
avaia
nooo, I think he means the keyboard
I have a g15, but it has a euro layout ><
hali
whats this g15?
ah
nerdalert keyboard
avaia
pretty much
dsdel
hali: yes, but check the 18 x 3 macro keys at the side
fully customizable :)
RJarett
heh i saw macro and thought you were about to talk about macro photos
bastards
dsdel
RJarett: lol
:D
usn_work
:)
dsdel
but most usefull the g15 is for sapgui and os/400 5250 terminal
avaia
backlit keys are nice
hali
who uses 5250 these days? :)
