are there any OpenSource or Freeware tools to generate an ER diagram from an existing database ?

Anyone here running a production oracle instance on vmware?

how do I remove any storage settings on a table with an alter table command?
flobian
Hi,
my db server (9i and 10g DBs) is running 774 days now. Now I restartet listener and no service is registered any more.
TNS-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
how can i get listener working correctly again?
ygip
I have this definition in create table "STORAGE(INITIAL 419430400 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT)" How do I "undo" this initial storage space so it doesnt allocate as much when I run an exp?
on this table
TheBonsai
flobian: try ALTER SYSTEM REGISTER;
vmnew
what is the oldest oracle db version that can be installed on linux? 7.3/8?
ygip
does anyone know how to set the quotes for export query parameter correctly in powershell? I've tried numerous things such as exp ... query="""where col > 'value'""" but on e.g. this i get error multiple values not allowed. Same error when I use one " instead of 3
corpsicle
in a connection string for oracle rac, does it matter if the service name has a space before it ?
TheBonsai
should not (if you're talking about TNSNAMES syntax, SERVICE_NAME = ...)

hi, i do insert into table select * from table@dblink; now i get ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype, how to avoid this, as im using select clause which seems to be allowed
m0rph3us
hi all, how can I increase the command history buffer in sqlplus?
I've been working with sqlplus and the 'l' command always give me the las command issued
flobian
TheBonsai:thanks. But it does not work. Reason: there where "old" processes of tnslsnr running. And they does not allow registering. I had to kill all tnslsnr processes and start listener again.
m0rph3us
I want to do 'l 3' in order to give me the antepenultimate command
flobian
TheBonsai:afterwards it worked as usual.
mator
m0rph3us, afaik sqlplus have buffer only for 1 command
m0rph3us
mator: thanks, I've been looking for it in google but I don't find any answer
mator: but, if you issue the command 'l 2' the command result is 'line number not valid'
mator: so I suppose that 'l' command can receive line number params
mator
m0rph3us, i've no idea, check sqlplus manual
usn_work
good afternoon ;)
mator
hello usb
usn =)
usn_work
:)
(Action) is no hot pluggable device
nots
hi. Any ideas why lsnrctl reload takes forever?

usn_work
does starting/stopping it work faster?
nots
no
stop is hung some 15min already
usn_work
can you take "lsnrctl status"?
nots
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXTPROC1)))
that is last line and it is first line after banner
usn_work
if all of those hang, maybe something with network connectivity is broken. Sometimes out of sockets
or localhost is not resolvable anymore
or the hostname listener has been configured for
something like that
did you try to kill and restart the process?
nots
kill with linux kill command? I'm not there jet to use force
usn_work
I don't understand
killing the listener with kill -9 does not make worse anything now
it does not work at all I'd guess
nots
ok, I was afraid it does make worse
ok, I kill -9 pid of lsnrctl stop
usn_work
no
nots
is it safe to kill tnslsnr or I have better option?
usn_work
kill -9 <pid of tnslsnr>
nots
ok
usn_work
after that, start it with lsnrctl start
maybe you want to move its log away first
(on some platforms a listener log >2GB may cause trouble)
nots
ok, done. It started and handler status is ready
usn_work
does the db register successfully?
nots
it was blocked before but nothing in network/log/listener.log
vmnew
repost. Is there an Oracle DB 7.3.4 for linux?
Trengo
dont think so
mator
vmnew, 7.3.x was non-officially supported by linux via sco emulation, read more at http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Oracle-7-HOWTO.html
vmnew, i think oracle released it's first release for linux as 8.x database version
DiscordianUK
I used V7 using iBCS2
8 was the first linux release
Trengo
8.0 and then 8i
DiscordianUK
Indeed
The good old character mode installer
Trengo
yeah
dont remember if i still have that 8.0.4 cd somewhere
RJarett
did i just join in on a history lesson?
mator
:)
vmnew
mator: where can I get that sco emulation?
RJarett
what was the discussion on?
vmnew
RJarett: oracle 7.3.4 on gnu/linux
DiscordianUK
Long since gobe vmnew
gone
RJarett
use an old redhat version with abi/ibcs
but why would you want to?
DiscordianUK
Indeed
vmnew
RJarett: I will, first I need the 7.3.4 installation files
DiscordianUK
It's gone like SCO itself
RJarett
why?
Dispend your thoughts on how you think you need to do this and explain the end result
More than likely we can craft a better solution
vmnew
RJarett: it's a long and complicated story, atm using Oracle 7.3.4 on a Sun Sparc (Solaris 7). That can't go atm, due to some old topology and such, again, long story. I do want to try and move it onto a linux machine
RJarett
ATM as in the network stack?
vmnew
no. atm as in "at the moment"
RJarett
oh
linux is a bad choice for this
vmnew
why?
RJarett
there was no 7.3.4 for linux
and we could never get it working right under ibcs when i was at oracle
which is why they started with a later version of 8.0
vmnew
I see
damnit, thought I found a creative solution here
hehe
RJarett
beleive me, im using abi/ibcs to run some crazy sh*t
like 15-20 year old sco apps on a 10 year old copy of rh 6.0
but it just is missing core functions for a db
vmnew
.. :(
thanks
RJarett
plus there was never a 7.3.4 for solaris intel i dont think
i dont remember one
but why do you feel it wont work on a different version?
even 8.0
vmnew
it's not a feeling, it's a fact. Has to do with very old Forms 3.0 (Sql*Forms 3.0) programs and such
its complicated
RJarett
if you can get your hands on 8.0.6 for solaris intel, you can hack that to work on solaris 10 in its own zone
but i bet it would be easier to rewrite the app in a scripted web language than pull this off
vmnew
maybe. We'll see
thanks
RJarett
and remember forms 3 was made for oracle 6
good luck with that one ;)
but i wouldnt trust 3 to work in 8.0
it all gets very iffy
vmnew
yeah
they tried it here
guess we'll just get a newer Sun Sparc, which is fully supported and such. Worry about that oraclde 7 migration later. Thought I could come up with something fancy as the platform for 7
usn_work
Just did run into Bug 7648406 - Child cursors not shared for "table_..." cursors when NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS = CHAR
Setting it back to BYTE is not possible, any ideas?
Trengo
i had forms3 running against oracle 7 and 8
not sure about 8i
RJarett
you sure it was 3 and not 4.5?
Trengo
pretty sure
i never did any forms4+
only touched up a couple
but iirc, forms had a DB part that had to be installed
at least product registration or something like that
dddh
to download patchset from metalink for some specific architecture people need just any valid license or database is licensed for exactly that version and architecture?
sorry for offtopic
vmnew
Trengo: oracle 8 with forms 3? anything in the docs about that? might be just what I need
brb, looking as well
Trengo
im pretty sure there's forms3 apps running today against newer than 8
usn_work
TheBonsai, are your folks still running the old forms applications? And do you have one of them on 9 as well?
I know them to run on 8i, but I am not sure about 9i
TheBonsai
usn_work: yes/no. the financial suite is also forms, but a closed prod
(on 9i)
Trengo
financials forms3?
thats apps9? 10?
TheBonsai
no idea, not my area, sorry
dogmeat
i started a 'create materialized view' sql yesterday morning, and it's been running over 24 hours. is there any way to see how close it is to being done?
RJarett
not really
did you test the sql for it prior to create mview?
you can see how much temp space is being taken and compare it to the original object
dogmeat
it's part of a restore step
RJarett
but are you sure it didnt time out or run out of space?
dogmeat
no
i can see from the process list it is still running
i see ora errors in the alert log, 'ORA-00354: corrupt redo log block header'
how can i see how much temp space is being taken?
i dont know that it has not timed out, but i can see that there's still plenty of disk space left (131G). i can see from the process list that oracle is in 'D' state e.g. disk wait
i can hear the disk trashing
s/trashing/thrashing

i started the create mtv as user foo (not sys), can i see this create statement in the running sql?
serge4
hello?
FINALLY
this working finally?
anyone out there that can offer up some oracle db conversion advice?
RJarett
more details needed
Trengo
serge4 you probably hadn't synchronized yet
serge4
i had an existing db converted to oracle from my sql running on a coldfusion application
RJarett
Thank you for taking the plunge into Oracle. As a new oracle use, you may have many questions.
serge4
and all of the ?s
all of the TMs are showing up as upside down question marks now
RJarett
The first and more important is... forget everything you ever learned about databases from mysql. Mysql makes people morons.
serge4
ok
RJarett
Second, if you ever used autoincrement in mysql, it just is sh*tty design and doesnt work in real databases
serge4
so i'm wondering if i need to change the character encoding or something?
RJarett
Yeah
NLS (internationalization)
serge4
i had to use the oracle developers tools to convert from mysql to oracle... do i have to redo everything?
RJarett
maybe
serge4
how do i do this and is it a pain
RJarett
what was the from and to db charactersets?
serge4
i don't know... i'm sort of the middle guy trying to resolve some problems and figure stuff out so i can get the job done and not just play the not my problem game
trying to just understand whats involved in doing this so i can see if it's really as big a deal as its being made out to be
and if in fact the character encoding is the problem. stuff like registered marks are showing up but are encoded like ®
the tms are ¿
this helpful or no
???
RJarett
lol
serge4
what
RJarett
working as intended
those are html codes dude
