ech0s7
hi
i'm on linux, how can i do to know what port stay using oracle server ?
BigODBA
are you talking about oracle database or some other oracle product?
ech0s7
oracle database (oracle-xe)
i have started the daemon
but i would know the port used
zetan
lsnrctl status
emctl status dbconsole
netstat -a
will show you ports in use
typically oracle is listening on 1521 for db connections, 1158 or 5500 for EM
BigODBA
netstat -pn and grep for ora
or XE
ech0s7
ok thanks
BigODBA
if all you needed to know is listener port that is 1521 by default
ech0s7
ok thanks
1521 it's right
BigODBA
crazy me.......started wondering what is that you are really scouting for

teite
i love netstat -tulpen :p
BigODBA
teite: thats a good one
limited to tcp/udp and ones listening i suppose
teite
yep
jay321
i created the database, but i cannot sqlplus into it.
i started the listener, but dont see the database instance listed
BigODBA
how did you create the DB.....dbca or script?
jay321
script
i see the instance is running
e.g. from the process list
BigODBA
did you set up ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables
jay321
yes
BigODBA
os and db version?
also are you connecting locally or from a remote machine?
jay321
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 2)
rhel es release 4, update2. Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
locally
BigODBA
are you invoking sqlplus from oracle user session?
jay321
yes
BigODBA
try this at command prompt> sqlplus / as sysdba
jay321
yes, it works, gives SQL> prompt
i cannot select tname from tab tou
lkthomas
guys
does oracle standard edition 11g for trial version ?
for * got
BigODBA
jay321: You need to read about DBs schemas and tables......all that fundamentals
lkthomas
anyone know ?
BigODBA
just to assure your install is fine run this: select object_name from dba_objects where rownum < 10;
jay321
BigODBA, yes, i know :D. im just learning oracle. i saw i received "ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress", then saw from a search it said to, "alter database open;"
now it is open
BigODBA
ok.....thats good
please don't get me wrong......never wrong to learn or be a beginner

jay321
np thanks for the help
its running the import now
ttl
lkthomas
hmm
guys
any free tools to stress test oracle 11g ?
I am trying to benchmark my servers
no one here stress test machine before implement ?!
dsdel
sqlplus on linux is so fu*ked...
mator
dsdel, how it is different on solaris ? :)
dsdel
no clue - windows it is nice
mator
who would use windows for databases ? sic!
dsdel
http://nopaste.narf.at/show/67/
mator
:-D
dsdel
98% of our customers?
DiscordianUK
yeuww
dsdel
linux/solaris is much more expensive than windows :P
DiscordianUK
given linux is free I'm not seeing how that is so
dsdel
ahahaha
oracle only supports suse enterprise/redhat enterprise or its own unbreakable linux (which is based on redhat el)
so if you don't run an oracle database on an unsupported operating system (who would do this for productive databases??) you have to pay monthly/quarterly maintenance fees
for what? for updates ... which you get free on windows...
mator
so what the prices? how much windows OS/version costs?
dsdel
you pay in half of a year more for linux than for one windows server license
Trengo
but it is fully supported in solaris
dsdel
mator: if you buty windows with a server you get windows 2008 server r2 for mostly around 300-400 eur
Trengo
and aix
dsdel
Trengo: sun solaris also needs maintenance fees, also aix
Trengo
and other unix flavors
DiscordianUK
oracle on windows is appalling
dsdel
if you don't pay them you don't get ANY updates
Trengo
yes you do
dsdel
DiscordianUK: so what is so bad on oracle on windows?
Trengo
you get security updates for free
DiscordianUK
that it's windows
mator
dsdel, every support/updates are cost money, but taking into account how much oracle costs - i don't think OS matters
dsdel
Trengo: and for serious libc bugs or kinda like this
DiscordianUK: haha go get away :P that is an argument which even disqualifies you for that discussion
Trengo
dsdel definitly get a budget
(Action) agrees, windows sucks
dsdel
'ohhh it's bad it's windows - i jsut even don't know ANYTHING but it is bad cause it is windows'
Trengo: come on, then tell me your arguemnts...
Trengo
it sucks horribly
dsdel
Trengo: ARGUMENT :P
not just 'it sucks'
tell me - from tehcnical aspect - why it sucks?
mator
dsdel, it can't be properly backup'ed
i mean windows
dsdel
mator: o0?
mator
yes, it is
dsdel
we aren't on windows nt 4 anymore
since 2000 and especially now with 2003 with VSS you can even backup open files consistent
mator
what is VSS ?
Trengo
its windows. it wastes half its cycles in pointless loops
dsdel
volume shadow service...
Trengo
you cant run it without a gui
dsdel
Trengo: you can't install oracle on linux without a gui...
Trengo
which is absolutely idiotic for servers
dsdel really?
mator
dsdel, i don't see a technical aspect how you backup open files properly
Trengo
i wonder how i install mine then
dsdel
Trengo: ye, the oui needs a gui....
Trengo
dsdel you're grossly mistaken
dsdel
mator: check VSS
mator
dsdel, i don't need another ms explanation - give me a simple technical description how you can backup open files
and in safe manner
i.e. "properly'
dsdel
mator: lol you can't even give me a siple description why windows sucks so much
mator
consistent
dsdel
so I shall give you a simple description on VSS? which is incoporated into the filesystem and windows kernel?
if it would be so easy - it would have been here since ms dos.
mator
dsdel, doing a backup of open files doesn't seem to me a proper way to do things
dsdel
Trengo: does oracle support text based install?
mator
dsdel, you clarified that windows can do it in consistent way
dsdel
mator: ye but I don't go and explain you for the next hours how vss is working
mator
dsdel, yes, a simple description
fail
ok'ay next reason...
linux is easier to manage
unix in general
dsdel
mator
and one of the reasons, is GUI vs console
dsdel
mator: lol 'easier' :D
sure :P
mator
dsdel, ask everyone here, they will tell you
dsdel
yes because they have got the knowledge
mator
dsdel, you can't ignore a public opinion
dsdel
i'm grown up with linux - so it's easy i like it
and I love it server-side
but 50% of ppl out there haven't even heard of linux
70% even never used linux
mator: I don't thikn that it is a public opinition than linux is easier to use....
it's perhaps a channel opinion of a developer/administrative channel
where naturaly ppl know linux andk now how to administrate it
and as I told before - I love linux - but our customers choose windows based on costs and that their admins even don't know how to use ssh
DiscordianUK
I've run servers for many corporations including bbc.co.uk
dsdel
we're sap partner and we sell 1 of 10 licenses linux based - rest is windows
mator
dsdel, we don't talk about idiots which run windows server and run oracle server on it, we talk about professional people, so the bacis or even more advanced knowlegde of technology is a much
DiscordianUK
they were all linux or solaris
mator
s/much/must/
dsdel
DiscordianUK: it's a difference in the scope - if small/medium or large companies
DiscordianUK
a very large company
world famous the BBC
dsdel
mator: we started talking about that our customers are buying windows - then someoen jsut thrown outside that windows sucks without any real arguments
the next argument was from you that you blamed me for mentioning VSS
i've pasted you a link to vss description on wikipedia - you just even said anything more
the next argument from your point was that linux is easier to use - that is no technical aspect also
mator
dsdel, at large, our beeline brand (one of the 3 biggest ex-USSR countries GSM operator) is running windows, but this doesn't matter since there's a lot of other unix'es and linux
dsdel
DiscordianUK: luckily most huge companies don't run windows at database backend :)
mator: 20-11:13:26 < dsdel> DiscordianUK: it's a difference in the scope - if small/medium or large companies
mastro
Hi, can you point me to a weblogic (10) tutorial/guide/doc that explain for a beginner how to set up a distributed cluster? I mean.. 1 server = administration console, 1/2 server = managed servers... I got an idea on what to do but i couldn't find any practical guide on how to do it properly
mator
we are large
natinal wide carrier/operator
dsdel
so i jsut gotta go now - have to get some work doen. and I haven't heard any real technical argument up to now against windows :P
mator
in our deparment all oracle servers on linux
last week I was in bank, they have oracle on solaris
(it was my job apply interview)
dsdel, unix (tm) is easier to manage than windows - it is the fact
dsdel
mator: what is easier? :)
i've got 10 servers here (windows) and i'm managing them all through one server...
mator
but windows is more widespread
dsdel
through automatic deployment and enrollment policies
mator
dsdel, i can manage 100 .. x000th linux servers with 1 machine if they all the same, we don't talk on the topic
dsdel
but as I said before - gotta get some work done hehe
mator: let's talka gain perhaps tomorrow (i've got vacation)/on weekend
:)
mator
(it was my interview with CDN content delivery network/operator a month ago)
i'm almost never switch on my brain on fridays :)
vmnew
I've added a datafile to a tablespace with a wrong name so I've deleted it and added another with the correct info. Now, for some reason, my app looks for that old dbf and says "no such file" but when I try to readd that same dbf it says "file already a part of database". How can I readd it/ delete it for good?
dsdel
then you've got a nice job mator :)
mator
no
I'm looking for a new one now
dsdel
vmnew: did you remove the datafile with alter tablesspace drop datafile?
vmnew: check select name from v$datafile;
mator
no one wants me...
(except of this bank and CDN)
dsdel
mator: most companies try to save money everywhere they can... but good luck further!
mator
(but I've refused to go to them)
vmnew
dsdel: I may have foolishly deleted the file without alter tablespace...
dsdel: it exists in v$datafile
DiscordianUK
That was a bit silly then
dsdel
vmnew: try alter database drop datafile 'path-to-file'; if it is working
vmnew
how do I delete it from v$datafile?
k
dsdel
hopefully there been now data inside :)
vmnew
hmm, lets try something else, how do I make that path alive again?
ie, create the actual file?
logfile keywork expected? logfile=/path/to/file
?
