gladier
hey is anyone around that can help an oracle noob configure their tnsnames correctly?
RJarett
netca
gladier
i know that much :) my issue is that when i go to sqlplus user/pass@SID i get aORA-12514
RJarett
its not user/pass@SID its @connectstring
plus did you start the listener on the db server?
connect string doesnt have to be the sid name
it can be anything
gladier
listener is started
RJarett
and the instance is registered to it?
tnsping localhost
tnsping connectsting
try those
gladier
tnsping localhost and tnsping orcl work fine
if i do a lsnrctl status i can see service orcl.business.ad is registered
RJarett
is this XE?
gladier
nope

RJarett
orcl.business.ad?
Instance ORCL status READY x handlers?
gladier
yep
RJarett
grep names $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.ora
pastebin yoru whole sqlnet.ora
its worrying that you have orcl.business.ad but your only connecting via the SID and im betting there is no ORCL= in your tnsnames.ora
gladier
part of what i think is getting my confused is that i have an asm instance in here too
http://pastebin.com/0yVFbByn
RJarett: ^
RJarett
darazabbix.business.ad resolves via dns?
host = should probably be the IP for best results
gladier
its the local machine name, so its in /etc/hosts
ill be ack in a few hours
thanks
hmm back
Insolit
is there a way to obtain a list of fixes included in a patchset?
TheBonsai
print out all relevant metalink notes and read it
the problem is, they aalways say "the fixes from X, Y, Z plus the following: ..."
so you have to do a manual recursive collection
this sucks, i know
Insolit
ok thanks

can i use exp to export data across ssh?
mator
jay321, not that I know via stdout, but you can try to use pipe: http://waltsilva.wordpress.com/2007/10/08/piping-output-of-oracle-export-to-a-remote-machine/
jay321
'k
DiscordianUK
You could use sshfs if it's on linux
mator
aye, :)
somehow I forgot about it
DiscordianUK
sshfs has it's uses
mator
this is what I call linux agility, i.e. able to use various techs to accomplish task
this way linux will beat everyone
not that I'm a bit fan of linux, just use it on a bunch of servers and my workstation

to get a full exp dump,e.g. with all the schemas, is it necessary to be dba, or can i use a user with full permissions?
packets
I would expect that you would only need exp_full_database role...

Hi
how is a function better than a procedure ?
Frq
i'm trying to build up a software and it has a database. i have a few types of employees (manager, technician, human resources etc. / they extend employee class in my java code ). Now on database side shall i create a table for "employee" only or all emplyee types needs to be created on database? ( their attributes are same but methods different)
dolved
solved*

jay321
i want a full export, (exp cmd), can I just specify FULL=y? does GRANTS=y or OWNER=foo make any sense ?
e.g. or are the latter two redundant?
DiscordianUK
Done as which oracle user?
jay321
yeah i dont know that part. im trying to figure out if sysdba is the one to use
i tried exp '/ as sysdba'@FOOSID but that didnt work
RJarett
why would you exp as sysdba?\
jay321
i dont know how to do it
RJarett
plus exp is deprecated in 10g/11g
jay321
yeah im in oracle 9
RJarett
ok
jay321
do i use dba?
RJarett
or the user its in
DiscordianUK
I suspect system is the user you need
RJarett
do you want to full or single schema?
DiscordianUK
You do know system's password?
jay321
full schema
i can sqlplus '/ as sysdba'
RJarett
full schema wasnt an option
you mean everything in 1 schema
or full database
jay321
ah 'full'
DiscordianUK
the whole db then
jay321
yes
DiscordianUK
exp system/manager is what I'd do with your system user's password of course
RJarett
though you shouldnt export as system either.
jay321
is 'system' and 'manager' something i need to fill in?
RJarett
use a dba account
DiscordianUK
(Action) is admonished
jay321
if i do exp dba/passwd ... said, 'ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist'
RJarett
did you set your ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID env variable?
jay321
ORACLE_HOME is set. ORACLE_SID was 'DEFAULT'. i export ORACLE_SID=FOOSID, that works, but for not for dba account
i dont have the dba account password as i see
however i can login as / as sysdba, can i then discover the user with system privs ?
RJarett
log in as sysdba then just make a new account grant it dba privs
use that to export
jay321
can i view the current accounts and see which have dba privs? i would like to not create new accounts
RJarett
yes
jay321
when i try selects after connecting as sysdba, it said, ORACLE not available, even when i set the ORACLE_SID ?
RJarett
on the OS: ps -ef | grep smon
do you see any processes listed?
jay321
yes
... well i just used a lower user privileged user, and exported that schema
ill have to confer with the dba dude on monday to see about the full export
thanks for all the help
