Your target: You know a) that 10.2.0.5 will be there soon for solaris? b) that 10g goes out of premier support in July 2011?
DiscordianUK
Does that mean XE will be bumped
bekks
Yes _I_ do know....
usn
(to be exact, premier support ends in July 2010, but Oracle will give us 1 y extended support for free)
DiscordianUK, I hope this means that XE comes in 11g clothes
DiscordianUK
Me too
usn
but XE never has been supported, it was available under the technet terms
DiscordianUK
indeed
(Action) knows this
usn
we will see, XE 10gR2 is really usable
(Action) has to go
bekks, good luck
good CEDT night
bekks
thanks :)

hey guys
how could you do oracle benchmark ?
I can't find a common tool to do that

wtf @ oracle forms.. data blocks have an 'optimizer hint' property. I set the optimizer hint using the forms builder property dialog, it doesn't pass it along. I set it using set_block_property, and it does pass it along..? Weirdness..
usn_work
forms is weird by concept - works as designed ;)
sytse
;)
true
although weird is not always bad
mgolisch
hm how do i tell rman to restore a specified backup?
Zyclops
hey, how do id do SELECT IF column_a IS NULL column_b ELSE column_c AS something
hali
decode(col1,null,colb,colc) as something
Zyclops
ah decode
thanks :)
Trengo
NVL
Zyclops
Trengo.. in this case i really need decode.. since it's not NVL(column_b, column_c)
i.e. column_b can have something in it even if column_a doesnt
DoubleString
good afternoon

usn_work, hey :)

when i am inserting a blob into a table, it gets truncated, e.g. an image file with size 7050 will be truncated to 6144 bytes
i am using jdbc to send the blob
though, it is not a blob, but a binary stream

RJarett
erdal: http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Programming/java/jdbc/LOBS/BLOBFileExample.java
you have to bytechunk it up there
erdal
RJarett: thanks for the link
mod_cure
odd, never seen this error before. rlsqlplus / as sysdba
rlwrap-0.30: error: cannot read and write /home/oracle/.sqlplus_history: Read-only file system
any idea ?
very odd
erdal
did you make sure that .sqlplus_history is writable?
mod_cure
erdal, its always work. odd
erdal, doesnt seem to change the chmod change
usn_work
did you check the mount state
?
mod_cure
usn_work, no sir. new to oracle
usn_work
if the FS is mounted RO you will loose :)
mod_cure
RO ?
usn_work
the filesystem might be mounted reas only?
read
mod_cure
usn_work, ive never changed anything. let me reboot the centos box then
usn_work
no, just look
mod_cure
its my sandbox
usn_work, how ?
usn_work
just execute "mount" as root and paste the result somewhere
and tell us what the current directory is when you do rlwrap
mod_cure
usn_work, http://www.pastie.org/955251
usn_work, /home/oracle
usn_work
looks good
can you do "echo test >> /home/oracle/.sqlplus_history" ?
erdal
is it not possible to store an ascii stream in a blob using jdbc?
when calling PreparedStatement.setBinaryStream(textFileInputstream) the call will cause a deadlock...
mod_cure
usn_work, echo test >> /home/oracle/.sqlplus_history
ash: /home/oracle/.sqlplus_history: Read-only file system
bash
usn_work
maybe full?
df -h
mod_cure
usn_work
I simply don't know
erdal
RJarett: any ideas?
mod_cure
usn_work, going to reboot
usn_work
mounted rw, >300GB free, but a file not writable
mod_cure
something must have happen
usn_work
single bit turned :)
mod_cure
:)
usn_work, connect username/password@db does the '@db' reference the directive in listener or tsnames file ?
or is it saying the target database is the db instance ?
usn_work, ping :)
usn_work, have error in file system, its currently scanning it :(
RJarett
erdal: to oracle it doesnt care whats in the blob
it just cant handle indexing the blob with text based functions if you store it as a blob.
if it fails uploading its your java code, nothing else
erdal
RJarett: ok, thanks
usn_work
mod_cure, the connect is user/pass@tnsname
how you choose it, does not matter
can be HILLYBILLY for SID=john and service_name=gaga
mod_cure
usn_work, so if i do not pass the @tsnames then sqlplus will look for an enviornment variable name ORACLE_SID=database name ?
usn_work, SID=name of the database but whats service_name ?
usn_work
you are using BEQ / IPC connections then
mod_cure
think the default database name is ORCL so SID=ORCL but not sure about service_name
usn_work
service_name is a name of a service ;) The db can have this set as parameter, or by package. Its used to manage ressources, failover and so on
(think about two applications using different ressource manager plans)
BUT the same logon user/schema name
things like that
mod_cure
lost about SID & servicename .... SID is the name of the default database ORCL ?
RJarett
SID is a identifier, it can eb anything up to 8 chars you name the database
service name is a more complex naming structure that usually includes a domain (but doesn thaver to be valid) which is used if you use a mroe complex database location structure like jndi or ldap to discover and store db info
Since some companies have hundreds or thousands of DBs. there needed to be a more complex method of handling all them
usn_work
RJarett, where's the difference to DB_NAME then?
I was under the impression that SERVICE_NAME is about using ressources
RJarett
DB_NAME is only used within a DB or inter related DBs (links, streams, RAC etc)
DB_NAME isnt related to an OID/LDAP entry
usn_work
ok
mod_cure
(Action) hides
RJarett
do you know how much of a bi**h TNSNAMES.ora is in an enterprise environment?
usn_work
mod_cure, to keep it simple: SID has to be unique on your box. If you specify a SID, you can choose which DB on the host you want to talk to. Ok?
mod_cure
RJarett, im new but it seems like TNSAMES.ora is like host files on unix. seems like a bi**h to maintain
RJarett
yep
usn_work
If you specify a SERVICE_NAME, you don't care which DB you use, as long as it provides a service you need
ok?
mod_cure
usn_work, thanks
RJarett
not really service_name still is important like oracle_sid is
mod_cure
im lost about service_name, i will have to read a bit etc
RJarett
still has to be unique in your org and what the db you connect to thinks it is
usn_work
I'm using it for load balancing or failover scenarios
RJarett
mod_cure: on your local network whats the different between bobs-computer and bobs-computer.tinynetwork.com?
ON that network, theres no difference. you can call to just bobs-computer
well what if you are on a large network and theres 10 bobs-computer
mod_cure
service_names is kinda like dns ? it tells where the box is at ?
RJarett
it has a hint to it.
do you know anything about ldap?
mod_cure
no
RJarett
ok. within registrations in ldap, names are broken up into parts
organizational units, organizations, company names, etc
ou= o= cn= etc
thats why it looks alot like a domain name
mod_cure
k
RJarett
cn=ORCL,cn=OracleContect,dc=myorganization,dc=com would be ORCL.myorganization.com service name in the ldap world
where as on a local network or within TNSNAMEs you can connect right to ORCL
mod_cure
thanks

I need to generate a unique id to store in DB, for a unique token that i will send in email links... Whats the best way to generate one... Java side or automatically on oracle's side?
mod_cure
usn_work, i can log in now after the reboot. had errors in FS
its probably from my little girl that likes to turn off the computers :)
i now know .9% of oracle. it seems like a big learning curve
maybe .7% :)
RJarett
Do you know how to do regex commands in oracle?
Or theme and gist searches of data using uploaded audio files?
mod_cure
if i dont specify the @tnsames in the connect string in sqlplus then sqplus will use the ORACLE_SID env and try to connect to oracle locally ? since sqplus is on same box as oracle. i guess it will bypass the listener ?
RJarett
yes local (bequeth) unless you have a TWO_TASK variable set in the env
mgolisch
if i have multiple inc level0 backups and i restored to the older one thats in the backup catalog, why cant i restore to the newer one afterwards? is this because the backups scn is higher than my current states?
RJarett
because it doesnt know of the newerone in the older one and you reset your restore point
mgolisch
ah i see just wondered why that is
RJarett
restoring can really screw stuff up. even if you switch database to copy, and recover, it kills your ability to switch back to the previous you were just on
since it purges the backup values
mgolisch
hm, its not inproduction yet, just trying to understand rman better
