hi .. my log buffer is set at 34922496 ... this database does around 2400 commits per second .. could this log buffer be the cause of the high disk i/o i have started to face ? maximum wait time is on log file sync

hi, if i wanna have 2 instances on 1 maschine, both are 10g2, must i have 2 separate oracle software installs or can i only make 2 different databases using same oracle_base/oracle_home?
KeiKurono
Reign1: of course the latter
Reign1
so since i create DBs using scripts (well i use dbca to generate them and then edit by my needs) i only need to edit them to fit second DBs needs and simply run and in several minutes will have second DB on same maschine, right?
KeiKurono
i'm not familiar with dbca, aniway i guess you'll need to set tsnames.ora, listener.ora and oracle_sid
Reign1
ofc, ok i got the point

I guess they copied their price list from Oracle

hi .. anyone awake :) ?
i used exp and moved my db from oracle 10gr2 to 11gr2 .. there is just 1 database in the server and just 11 tables .. not that big tables .. Now the database starts to get slow .. via enterprize manager, i see commit/log file sync taking a significant amount of time. The commit is around 2400 per minute .. Nothing on the application side has changed .. the commit used to be 2000-2500 on 10gr2 also .. moving on 11gr2, it suddenly seems
the cause of the issue .. I googled a bit, read a few pdfs on the subject and based on that, tried to decrease the redo log group and increase size also, but that has not helped .. Is there anything that I can do to check/fix this issue ? The server is on raid 10 with 15krpm disks .. cannot add more disk or ssd
wow .. long :D

admin0: may be your queries change their execution plan from 10g to 11g
admin0
good point
we had not kept a record of the plan while it was in 10g thouigh
annimart
if you kept a copy of your 10g you will have to use it
admin0
server retired, reformatted and reclaimed by the datacenter
annimart
ok^^
admin0
i will try to analyze the execution plan
annimart
you said that your most time event is commit /log sync ?
may be the disks where your logfiles are less speed than thoses used for the 10g db
admin0
both 10g and this 11gb are on raid 10, 300gb 15k rpm disk .. hdparm -tT gave better results here than on 10g
i will continue to do some tests and then ask here when i find something solid
away for 30 misn
mins
(Action) sends a big pizza to annimart
thanks

hdparm or sdparm?

Hi guys, I'm runnig a dataguard scenario on my lab, but now I hae Active dataguard enabled
and since I don't have an Active dataguard license for the production I want to disable it
what can I do to disable it
I've already stop redo apply, then mounted the standby DB and start redo apply with this:
ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
is there any command to disable active dataguard?

In Oracle 10.2.0.4 I have a table that contains about 200g of LOBs. I deleted hald of the rows, Will the LOB space be reused just like it would be in a normal tablespace before new extents are allocated?
s/hald/half/

yes

I have a question about specific point on DBCA on oracle documentation 11g :
In "2 day DBA" documentation Oracle write the following :
To start DBCA :
1 - Log on to your computer as a member of the administrative group that is authorized to install Oracle Database software and to create and run the database.
I've installed Oracle with user : oracle, group oinstall
I have a user "oraadm" belong to dba group but not oinstall: This user cannot run dbca.
Is that means that SYSDBA group should not create database ? This is the role of oinstall group ? Where is the limit (who do what) ?
zasz
What are you trying to accomplish
annimart
I trying to determine who do what on my server. Oracle(oinstall) Install software, oraadm(dba) is the DBA
my point of view is that oracle user don't have to create db
this is the job of oraadm
but oraadm cannot run dbca (it don't have permissions on files to run it)
zasz
I usually create databases with the user i installed oracle with, usually "oracle"
annimart
is your oracle user belong to dba group ?
zasz
do you understand the difference between OS authentication and oracle auth?

annimart
yep
zasz
my oracle user is a member of the os dba group
so I connect with OS auth, ie sqlplus / as sysdba
annimart
so your oracle user is "SYSDBA"
zasz
yep
annimart
this is the thing i don't want to. Oracle os user can be managed by 1 team, oraadm by another, for security reasons. My first team should not have access to data for example
in my installation oracle cannot logon as sysdba, only sysoper
but anyway i think that oracle role will be extend to "create databases"
create but not admin
zasz
why don't you create a role that has the privileges the team needs
then create users and assign the role to the users
Trengo
annimart which DB did you manage before? pgsql?
annimart
Oracle
for 10 years now
zasz: i don't want to manage role through home made database role
i don't want to mixed sysdba and sysoper operation, that's what oracle do with dbca
let' me explain
in my $OH/rdbms/lib (11g) i have a config.c
in it :
#define SS_DBA_GRP "dba"
#define SS_OPER_GRP "oinstall"
so : oracle is sysoper and sysoper can : start , shutdown, backup but cannot look in data and cannot create DB
oraadm is SYSDBA : can do all sysoper operation + CREATE DATABASE
DBCA cannot be run by oraadm (failed because of files permissions)
DBCA is run by oracle, you put SYS Password within it and DBCA is doing a "connect sys as sysdba" to create the DB
and put the password asked by
So oracle cheat

02 01i am putting together a worse case document and im curious, what happens if one of my tables run out of indexes, what is the procedure?
jfroebe
runs out of indexes? how many indexes do you need? ;-)
Bisu[Shield]
not important :), what do guys do if that happens?
there?
