usn_work
TheBonsai, status is shutdown immediate
TheBonsai
usn_work: hehe. you prefer irc :)
usn_work
yes
gnah, downtime falls into backup window
nic to see all those errors
TheBonsai
down is down
backups are for whimps
zambaboo
TheBonsai: i had to reset to a previous incanration
TheBonsai: now this stuff works.
go figure.
TheBonsai
ah, so my very last guess was right
"* TheBonsai mumbles something about setting DBID and stuff, or another incarnation"
the very very last, as usual. GNAH
zambaboo
(Action) eats salt
markl_
is there an easy way to add Readline support to SQLPLUS ?
TheBonsai
google rlwrap

markl_
cool ty
TheBonsai
(and maybe there are already some nice oracle/sqlplus configs around)
usn_work
markl_, henplus is also neat
lots of jdbc voodoo, but nice
zambaboo
rlwrap works really nice for me
is there a way to speed things up with rman? this box has like 16gb of ram and 8 processors. and 15k rpm drives. why is this taking forever :/
usn_work
parallelize it
if you have enterpris edt.
TheBonsai
and take a coffee if you have std. edt.
markl_
rlwrap was sure easy
zambaboo
usn_work: naw i have se
markl_
i will google henplus too
zambaboo
rlwrap is cake to install
markl_
i really try to stay away from anything with Java in it, though
zambaboo
although i had to compile it
im looking at you, redhat, yes.
markl_
some apps are worth it. ty!
zambaboo
(Action) beats his head on the table. COME ON!
TheBonsai
compressed backup, no parallelism
take another coffee
(and don't forget to RECOVER after the restore ;) )
zambaboo
yeah this is just a test
im plugging this thing into bacula
TheBonsai
*shudder*
zambaboo
what?!
TheBonsai
i just imagined an unintended, bacula controlled database restore after some heavy failure scenario
zambaboo
nononono
none of that
just a restore job that pushes the backups and executes an rman script

TheBonsai
ah
zambaboo
i do need some coffee.
omg and all i ahve is this doc francisco crap!
Trengo
don francisco?
zambaboo
yeah its a preground
and its not good
usn_work
good night folks
deebo
can someone give a simple example about using a SYS_REFCURSOR as a parameter for a stored procedure call
i guess the principle is that it refers to a temporary table i create?
archangle25
is there a significance to the v$archive_dest column dest_id value of '1' ??
rtfm'ing "Assume that destination 1 points to the local archived redo log"
this correct? ^^
deebo
hmmm, is it really this simple: create table ....; insert into table values...; STORED_PROCEDURE.myproc(CURSOR(select * from table)); ?
KeiKurono
morning
usn_work
good morning
realHans
Hi. How long does it take for you to import a 10 gb .dmp file ? here it takes about 6 hours and I have a E6600, two 60Euro Desktop HDs ... and Redo files logging is off. Does this sound usual ?
(2 GB of Ram)
usn_work
what IO capabilities does your storage subsystem have?
do you have CPU in WAIT during import?
What's the CPU load?
hali
realHans: sounds very slow
realHans: 10gig imp should take about 30mins at most
realHans
hmm the CPU is at 3-5% in work during import ...
hali
importing from NFS?
realHans
I import from a file which is on the server ...
could it be a trigger is working even during the import process ?
mator
morning
usn_work
possible, but try do do abstract diagnosis, see what resource does limit you
check if its CPU, IO write, IO read ...
realHans
hmm sounds quite logic ...
I'll do it. Thank you ..
usn_work
np, come back with the results if you feel like it
realHans
ok ...
KeiKurono
from the manual "You can disable integrity constraints temporarily so that large amounts of data can be loaded without the overhead of constraint checking."
how do i do that?
i have to do alter table for all tables or there is a shortcut
usn_work
KeiKurono, you will have to disable each constraint
KeiKurono
i see..
datafile '/export/home/oracle/oradata/dap/system.dbf' size 200M autoextend on next 10M maxsize un limited
this will create the system tablespace right?
seems not..
(i can't use dbca since there is not enough space in the machine)
DiscordianUK
...
KeiKurono
what?
DiscordianUK
Are you still trying to create an Oracle instance? like about a week and half on?
KeiKurono
so what?
Sahilsk
Hi
I need php binding wid oracle 10g.does anyone know anything abt it? I m little confuse between oci_ and ora_
.
admin0
Hi, My current query is something like: $_names = qq[select NAMES from ADDRESS where ID='$id' and area='$area' ]; $names_ = $dbh->prepare($_names); $names_->execute;" I want to remove that $id and $area directly and use ? placeholders.. How do I do it ? is it $_names=qq[selct .. id=? and area=? , $undef, $id, $area ] ?
usn_work
Sahilsk, compile OCI8 support into php
you need an installed oracle client first, to have the libraries
should be lots about it in the webm, did not do it myself for years now
admin0, is it java?
Sahilsk
?
admin0
perl
Sahilsk
Thanks, culd u tell me, wat oci_ and ora_ meant for? Are they two diff. Binding available for php or wat?
usn_work
admin0, no clue how to use bind variables in perl
but this could be a keyword to search for
admin0
i got some help from the perl chat site
thanks sir
usn_work
Sahilsk, in what context ora_ and oci_?
Sahilsk
I read a tutorial on sm site about how to use bind variables 4 oracle. There they used ora_logon,ora_fetch,ora_close like function. I search the php site
And found totaly diff function starting wid oci_
usn_work
yeah, these are function calls for oci, to open cursors, work with them, parse statements, close them
Sahilsk
So, jst wondering are they two dif binding opti?ns wid oracle 4 php devel.
usn_work
this is hard bread to chew
Its a wild guess, I think that OCI_ functions are what you want, it's the oracle call interface.
ora_ might be much more basic
Sahilsk
So, these two are same thing. Great
Actually h want mysql_xyz alternative 4 oracle
Cant we simply transform mysql binding function to work wid oracle?
DiscordianUK
wid==with in English
realHans
usn_work: After I really disabled redo logging ;) The 10Gb import came down from 6 hours to 1.5 hours. And looking for HD load (wit perfmon.msi) ,I figured yout the HD load is nearly always at 100%. It seems I need a faster HD functionality ... :p Thanks again for the hint.
usn_work
realHans, no problem. Are you short with bandwidth or IO rate?
IO rate is improved by using more disks in a RAID
Sahilsk
Any way thanks guys. Usr_work
realHans
assuming the bandwith is rarly the limit (and I use no raid) its probably the IO rate ...
usn_work
ok, one disk will take about 100IOPS, might be too less
realHans
oO iops ...
lunch time. Time for my liver loaf buns :p
cmug
More spindles, *drool*
Damn metalink, half of the documents do not open again
lio_013
i get oracle enterprise linux >>>>>> can i open an oracle application that need jinitiator on it ???
hali
oracle enterprise linux is just a plain linux distro based on centos based on redhat
you probably need oracle application server
DiscordianUK
Err OEL has no relation to CentOS
It is based on RHEL though
hali
DiscordianUK: rpm -qa
you find centos references even in the rpm names
DiscordianUK
Interesting
I wonder if the CentOS people know that
dings
Is there a unit-testing framework any of you would recommend for pl/sql code?
karlb
Ich have an updatable view (with instead of triggers for update and insert), but when I try to use a merge statement to merge data into this view, I get an "invalid table name" error. Is merging into a view not supported, or am I doing something wrong? (using 11g)
deebo
when calling a stored procedure returning a SYS_REFCURSOR, can i somehow alias the fields?
similiar to select myField as myAliasedField from someTable;
karlb
deebo: Maybe you could use something like SELECT col1 AS foo FROM table(myfunc()) ?
balek
hi i have a question please i use oracle rac with two node i don't know why the node1 have both vip adress when i try to see if the rac oracle have a good configuration with cluvfy.bat stage -post crsinst -n node1,node2 it tell me crs is not installed on the node2 i don't know why the node2 is not on the cluster if you can help me please thanks
is it a coruption of the voting disk or other thanks
ygip
I get a maximum number of cursors exceeded error when running a lot of insert statements, are these cursors automatically assigned to each of my inserts or what is their purpose?
usn_work
ygip, how do you issue your inserts?
sql script, java, ...
RJarett
ygip: are you closing your resultsets and your cursors after using them?
and whats the database open_cursors setting?
ygip
insert into table(cols, ..) values(val1, ...) and a lot of them after each other. It's from MS BIDS C# script component
the oleDbCommand
RJarett
why arent you batching them?
ygip
to save time, this is a one time script
wont be running again
RJarett
and?
ygip
doesnt matter how long it takes
RJarett
its just as easy to do something right once
ygip
I thought about it and decided reached the conclusion that i would have to use less time on coding this if I just fired some inserts after each other. but if thats the problem i guess i'll have to batch them
RJarett
are you whatever.close() your call where whatever = new oleDbCommand?
ygip
i keep using the same command
RJarett
because if you arent its keeping them all open as individual things
usn_work
ygip, trouble is, that open cursors are limited, and without closing them, you will hit a session limit for them
ygip
just change statement
RJarett
it still makes a new cursor for every query
.net isnt known to be efficient or smart
ygip
OleDbCommand cant be closed, the connection can
RJarett
actually it can
ygip
oh?
RJarett
which function are you using to process the query?
ygip
Exenonquery
ExecuteNonQuery
then i set a new Commandtext
and keep doing that
RJarett
not really what i would do
ygip
okay, i assume it creates many cursors this way so i would gladly change it :) got any suggestion?
RJarett
so you have a crapload of insert statements?
how many?
ygip
4500 for one table, but there's like 20 tables
got 300 cursors configured for my user atm.
usn_work
that's default
ygip
ok
So the question is how i can release the cursor that each insert creates
I can see i insert exactly 300 before failing
I have another much bigger table where i can insert all rows, but i think thats becuase they time out faster than it traverses rows
RJarett
if you have all the inserts dump it to text and run it in sqlplus
hali
ygip: close() on the sql object
or whatever it is in c# bongo script
ygip
There is no close functionality on oleDbCommand, only on the connection itself :S
I can close readers and I do
But when executing a void query i cant close it as far as i can see
I solved it by constantly creating new oleDbCommand objects and calling dispose() manually to get them garbage collected. Apparently they clean up resources when they are disposed
and the GC disposes too slow
usn_work
batch them :)

asked in #java but thought id ask here: if I am inserting something into an oracle db from a java Prepared Statement, what do i have to do so funky characters get into the database? The fields are of type NVARCHAR2 and webpage encoding is UTF-8. Not sure what else to do.
#java didnt help so im all ears. ;)
KeiKurono
i guess you have to set the db charset to utf8 too
i don't understand this: http://www.pastie.org/909291
RJarett
not just utf8 many charsets can handle it
EMG_MEANS
KeiKurono
great, thanks
