glaksmono
anyone here?
how do you get the first element of VARRAY?
RJarett
arrayname.FIRST? ;)
howsthat
glaksmono
hmm..
for some reason it gives me error..
RJarett
i := varrayname.FIRST;
glaksmono
RJarett: it says that it's invalid identifier :(
SELECT p.photo.id, pt.FIRST FROM photos2 p, TABLE(p.photo.tags) pt;
RJarett: same case with SELECT p.photo.id, p.photo.tags.FIRST FROM photos2 p;
RJarett
ahh i was using it as in plsql
i dont use them in sql
glaksmono
:(
RJarett: this one doesn't week working as well.. http://pastebin.com/FzpRAcqr
seems like there's something wrong with the ranking ORDER BY
helpppppppppppppp
how do you get the first element of ARRAY in SQL?
Ceendat
hey is does it make sense to monitor port 1521 to see if a db goes down?
r0
(Action) zzzzzzzz

Ceendat
if your bored, maybe you could help me out :x
oh..
RJarett
he denied

hi all. ive installed and successfully compiled ruby-oci8 on mac os x. im trying to connect to my database but i recieve the following error message: OCIError: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
im simply wanting to use the instant client. what is all this nonsense about configuring a listener?
RJarett
set your environment variables or add a tnsnames.ora file
you are passing the listener on the db server bad info about which db you want
multigrain
i have added my tnsnames.ora
RJarett
well something is wrong with it
multigrain
ill echo a censored version of it
*echo -> print
PROD = (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=SERVER_NAME)(Port= 1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=PROD)))
RJarett
prod is the REAL ORACLE_SID?
multigrain
umm, is that bad? im not the maintainer of this database. im simply a ruby developer that has been tasked with interfacing with some oracle stuff
RJarett
did you get that tnsnames.ora from the DBA?
you cant just make the sh*t up
and osx isnt really a well supported os
multigrain
i recieved it from another developer working with php-oci8
yah.
oracle has been not fun. (well, my limited understanding of it has been not fun)
RJarett
good
mysql makes people stupid
and im sure youre used to mysql
multigrain
haha yep
just give me a socket, a username and a password. i don't see a need for anything else
what if i just wanted to connect without setting up a tnsnames.ora. i have the user/pass/server/port/dbname. what else do i need?
RJarett
its a long ass specific connect string
multigrain
why cant i just use sqlplus USER/PASS@SERVER:PORT/NAME
that pulls the same error
RJarett
no kidding
dude, really shut the fu*k up
quit bi**hing
you are using a real database now
and i can just imagine how youll mess it up leaving connections and cursors around since you are used to mysql mentality
cmug
lol
multigrain
im sorry. i was mistaken. i thought users on here would either provide help or point me in the direction of resources that would help me. i didnt realize i was on #fu*kwad
cmug
you'r not
're

RJarett
www.oracle.com
thats the direction
otn.oracle.com thats even moer the direction
cmug
tahiti.oracle.com ? :)
multigrain
well thank you so much. it all makes sense now.
RJarett
theres so much information and samples and docs and information on the web about oracle
ruby devs are such sacks of crap
cmug
boohoo, now he sobs somewhere
Ceendat
anybody alive?
Dormir
I'm sure someone is
cmug
Define alive
Dormir
guess he's not alive enough to define it
Ceendat
I have a weird problem
our inhouse application relys on oracle
and I have to restart the tns listener alot
port 1521 usually stays up
not sure a good way to monitor this?
maybe just auto restart it at midnight?
Dormir
what errors do you get?
you shouldn't have to restart the listener like that
what OS?
TheBonsai
never seen this effect. and what version of oracle?
cmug
just when I thought the new restore method of creating new databases was the best thing in a long time, i realized what a pain it is to upgrade the created database afterwards. Blah
easier to do manual create database scripts with patched binaries
Ceendat
its oracle 10g dormir
TheBonsai
i asked about oracle version. HE asked about OS ;-)
Ceendat
oh
server 2008
and 10g :)
cmug
I have a listener that keeps segfaulting, but the 1521 port goes down with it
Ceendat
hm, what do you do, just restart the service?
cmug
yea
Ceendat
like when I go look at it
TheBonsai
w2k8 network stack has some quirks, maybe that's just yet another one
Ceendat
the service is still running
cmug
we have a script running every minute that starts the listener :D
TheBonsai
cmug: ouch :)
Ceendat
is the service still running when you restart it?
cmug
TheBonsai, tell me about it
TheBonsai
cmug: the adventure of oracle? no, i'm still not convinced this isn't just a bad dream :)
Ceendat
cmug, when you goto restart the service, does the service appear to still be running?
cmug
did he leave already
TheBonsai
Ping timeout: 252 seconds
cmug
Ah
TheBonsai
he asked you if your service continues to run once you restart it
cmug
yeah I saw that much
I ignore joins/parts
but I don't run windows so no, I don't have any services
and no, the lsnrctl process has segfaulted so it is not running either on my linux
TheBonsai
same here. the one windows 2008 database i have is an administrative mess :)
cmug
I have 50+ administrative mess databases
TheBonsai
hehe :)
a friend had an interesting problem with w2k3 recently. their software has a service that pools another server every 2 minutes. due to a configuration mistake, the IP of the other server was wrong. after about 2h the network stack was overloaded with connections that weren't cleaned up and the host got networkingly unresponsive
(not related, but an interesting bug)
dsdel
I would think more about a bug in the program with memory
you can DDoS an win2k3 server with IIS running for severall days if ye is correctly set up
I've mroe than once spawned several hundreds/thousands of ocnnections of a win2k3 server for testing purposes without any problem
TheBonsai
no, it was the OS in this case. the stack remembered the connections even after process termination (also: the process has enough other installations that don't show a mem leak or thelike)
dsdel
if the stack remembers the connection afer process termination - something wasn't given free from the program code
else hwo could the stack remember the connection?
cmug: ever thought about turning logging/tracing on for the listener?
TheBonsai
there are only a few system ressources that are not process bound, i.e. the process usually has to free "nothing". anyways, if everything worked like it should, it would have not been a bug
cmug
dsdel, we have it turned on
dsdel, even an SR created
dsdel
cmug: no error messages there/inside the eventlog?
cmug
Can't remember, I wasn't actively working on the problem
dsdel
32/64bit?
cmug
64
dsdel
tried to create a new listener on another port?
cmug
no
dsdel
2008 r1/r2?
cmug
linux
dsdel
strace'd the listener? if he segfaults every minute?
cmug
it doesn't segfault every minute, but our solution was to start it every minute
dsdel
I would - just for testing - add another listener and see if it is running nice
cmug
we should improve the script to see if it is up or not, and then start it
but we don't ahve time :)
breakfast now
dsdel
:)
TheBonsai
good argument :)
anyways, time for work. bye

hi huys
hi guys
develop a form using oracle 9i ,developer9isuite, WindowsXp.
it contains "item chart" called "pie_chart" related to a file drill2.ogd already created by devloper2000 R2.1 Graphics Builder;
the functioin OG.Open (:PARAMETER.PATH_OG_GRAPH || 'drill2.ogd', 'pie_chart', plist => pl);
is used to establish "Drill2.ogd" graph related to the "Pie_Chart" ... i verify all the paramters, the functions, the procedures
created, by runnig the form in debug mode.
All of the results and the values are expected and true... and no error messages or alerts are shown at form runtime ...
finaly the problem is, when i run the form the "Drill2.ogd" graph related to the "Pie_Chart" is not diplayed in the file " .fmx"
Any suggestions???? thanx
Dormir
any suggestions on how to do your homework?
haven't done forms in so long, I wouldn't be much help. I'd have to load it to remember what I did know

good morning #oracle

Hey, which logfile does Grid Control write to when it tries to access a target OS host and it claims my credentials fail? The credentials are 100% correct and from GC host ssh works just fine so I wonder what is the problem in OEM
well ok another problem solved by random restarts of agent processes
ygip
I get returned an integer when doing DBMS_METADATA.GET_XMl inside the tag TYPE_NUM for each column, where can i map these numbers to actual type names?
Sorrowful
hello
I was wondering how can I add a string to the results using sql?
hali
Sorrowful: yes, just concatinate it in?
Sorrowful: like select item_weight ||'Kg' from tableFoo;
Sorrowful
hali Thank you very much!

i want to query a db2 database from within an oracle db
is that possible?
seems to be possible
Sorrowful
how can I get the date like fith of january 2010 for example?
dsdel
Sorrowful: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=oracle+flashback+database+to+date
but you don't see it then you flash it back
even don't know if you can 'just only see them'
meteo1974
hi oracle's team... if all the required programs(function, procudure, package) have been done, how Developer9iAS load or read the graph file .ogd at run time?? is there any configuration?? my technical env(Oracle9i, Dev9iAs, dev2000 Graphics builder, Windows Xp ). 1ox
hali
to_date is probably all Sorrowful needs, no need for flashback?
Sorrowful
well I just want to change the day number to first - second etc..
how can I just change the day format? from numbers? I dont want the name of the day like DY
dsdel
Sorrowful: ah sorry totally misunderstood you :D
Sorrowful: http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/timesten/1121/doc/timesten.1121/e13070/ttsql247.htm tried getdate?
or to_date even
ah I should stop giving advises today, I'm kinda confused
Sorrowful
:/ I have a date column and I want to view it as 'First of 'Month' 'Year'
or second/third
http://www.techonthenet.com/oracle/functions/to_date.php
I couldnt find what im looking for in this table

hi oracle's team... if all the required programs(function, procudure, package) have been done succefully, how Developer9iAS load or read the graph file .ogd at run time?? is there any configuration?? my technical env(Oracle9i, Dev9iAs, dev2000 Graphics builder, Windows Xp ). 1ox alot

I've got a DB, that has excessively high CPU load. There is nearly no IO wait, and it's 99,78% non-parse CPU time. There's one statement top in Elapsed time (37%) and CPU time (51%), but it does not appear in top gets or top executions
The plan is superb, cost=5, but 100% CPU
RJarett
cant use plans anymore really
have you profiled this query?
usn_work
pardon?
there's no SQL profile for that query.
RJarett
create a sql tuning set on it and post the tuning report
usn_work
Sorry, but I don't have a tuning pack licensed
RJarett
ahh
usn_work
But why that statement on plans? I extracted it from cursor cache, the DB uses its child number
RJarett
11 or 10?
usn_work
11gR1
sytse
mm, found a nice, free, 572-page oracle 10 performance tuning guide on the net
I guess that would be good to read..
usn_work
tuning guides are always nice ;)
RJarett
usn_work: because explain plans as we see it are usually not what the db actually runs
usn_work
true, and this is why I am using execution plans
RJarett
which is why we need profiles
