is there a way to lock a table so that other sessions can't even read from a table?
access exclusive mode doesn't do it... maybe there's another way to attack this?
(background) - i'm trying to tune a refresh of a materialized view by turning atomic_refresh=>false
but I want other sessions to wait until the refresh is done

is there a preferred Oracle DBD to use for an RHEL5 system? I found a perl-DBD-Oracle-1.19-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
but i could grab a newer src rpm if this version is really obsolete
and a follow up question, is there an easy way to grab rpm's of the oracle dependencies?
libclntsh.so.10.1, libocijdbc10.so, libnnz10.so, etc
anyone? should i just find a non-RPM way to install these?
DiscordianUK
I didn't see the question
What rpms are you looking for
markl_
the main one I need is perl-DBD-Oracle
but it has lots of dependencies that aren't in the standard rpm repos
and i am not an oracle guru
DiscordianUK
Ahhh I don't believe that there's an RPM for perl-DBD-Oracle
markl_
there are a few
DiscordianUK
I had to build that myself on centOS 5.4
markl_
but they have dependencies on things like libclntsh.so.10.1, libocijdbc10.so, libnnz10.so
DiscordianUK
Those are in oracle's instantclient rpms

markl_
ok i should look for oracle-instantclient11.2 ?
DiscordianUK
oracle-instantclient-11.2 or something such yes
markl_
ok so i should probably skip this rpm, which is the newest oracle el5 rpm I found: perl-DBD-Oracle-1.19-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
DiscordianUK
Well if it works for you
yum localinstall perl-DBD-Oracle...rpm
markl_
well it has those version 10 dependencies and the site i found it on has it listed as "obsolete"
but maybe i can rebuild perl-DBD-Oracle-1.23-4.fc12.src.rpm
DiscordianUK
I suspect that as long as you stick to one version of Oracle's rpms it matters little
I just did the perl Makefile.PL thing in the end on CentOS VM
markl_
i am kind of anal, i try to use RPM's wherever possible
makes it really easy to duplicate a config to another box
DiscordianUK
which is unusual for me too I like it all to be packaged
markl_
make install is my sworn enemy :)
DiscordianUK
Mine normally
markl_
will the Basic instant client be good enough?
i can share my x86_64 rpms if this works
DiscordianUK
I can't remember I installed sqlplus too
markl_
ok
DiscordianUK
My centOS VM is i686 not x86_64
I use fedora on the desktop I house my VM on and that's all rpmed up
It's only a little VM with Oracle-XE and a few other databases
markl_
ok next issue
WARNING: I could not determine Oracle client version so I'll just
default to version 8.0.0.0. Some features of DBD::Oracle may not work.
should i install the sqlplus rpm to solve this?
hmm: Using Oracle in /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client64
sqlplus: error while loading shared libraries: libsqlplus.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
but the library is in /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client64/lib
TheBonsai
LD_LIBRARY_PATH comes to mind, but maybe ORACLE_HOME is enough
markl_
yes, LD_LIBRARY_PATH did it
i didn't think that it would respect that when doing an rpmbuild
i'm not sure if i'm glad that it did :)
DiscordianUK: ok got the src rpm if you want it :)
DiscordianUK
I'm fine thanks my VM works
It's all backed up ready for a reinstall if needed
it's a bit dirty but it's a small Oracle-XE appliance in 2G disk and 512Mb ram
which also runs my other DBMS as needed
which many will never have even heard of
is your Oracle 11g install an RPM?
markl_
what is oracle-xe ?
TheBonsai
a 10.2 database with limits, usable for free

markl_
Discordian: i used the instant client rpm
Discordian
excellent
markl_
the process that our Oracle guy goes through is absolutely insane though, do they make an easy el5 RPM install?
for the server
?
Discordian
I'm unaware of any rpms other than for Oracle-XE and the instantclient stuff
markl_
he has to launch a gui and load X just to install it
what are the limits on XE?
ok what's your other DBMS, you piqued my curiousity
Discordian
(Action) remembers doing that from london on a server in Tokyo
TheBonsai
database size, CPU usage, no enterprise features, no RAC, some more of this stuff
Discordian
reality/pick/openqm
markl_
i played with pick once like in the 80's, the others are definitely unknown to me
TheBonsai
and if your admin has no X on his workstation, he's a masochist :)
Discordian
(Action) ran pick dbmses for years
markl_
he has mac with an X server
Discordian
haha
markl_
but i usually try to install servers with no X at all
Discordian
OS X has X
markl_
so that makes it even more annoying for him :)
i was so pissed at Apple when they first released OSX because I was expecting it to use X for everything
hmm, oracle-xe sounds interesting
i'll have to try it
Discordian
it's i686 only
I know people using small Oracle-XE VMs for stuff
markl_
if our java devs use oracle-xe for a test database, will their code magicall work with a "real" oracle db?
magically
TheBonsai
markl_: the server doesn't need X (running)
what bugs me, at leas for a 10.2 client install i once automated, you even need a DISPLAY for a response file install
which is.... stupid :)
markl_
yep
TheBonsai
but well, the servers here have a standard install including an X base install, the rest is SSH and my X display
markl_
what is Oracle's OS like?
TheBonsai
a redhat with the red hat removed
markl_
with an rpm installer or do you have to go through the same process?
TheBonsai
no idea. that never was a pro or a con for me. it's easy to install
DiscordianUK
i always did non-Oracle-XE via the installer
which isn't rpm
it does need X generally
albert_kam
has anybody tried or heard of installing oracle9i on opensuse 11.2 x86_64 ? is this possible ?
cmug
One can ofcourse do a silent install too.
And, the X can be in a remote machine. You do X Forwarding with SSH
tvstebut
Hello
Hi, i'd like to get some information about how to secure connection on oracle 1521 port with SSL
DiscordianUK
I suggest reading http://www.easysoft.com/products/data_access/odbc_oracle_driver/security.html for info about that tvstebut
tvstebut
thank you DiscordianUK
DiscordianUK
and http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3850106/Secure-Sockets-Layer-and-Oracle-11g-Security.htm
tvstebut
Just a last question
Can I make a standard install, and applying security customization afterward
DiscordianUK
Yes sure
tvstebut
great you genius
DiscordianUK
(Action) has a small virtual machine with Oracle-XE running CentOS 5.4

hey guys, I have a table 'test', inside that table I have a 'update_date' date column, how do I delete all records that are older than 30 seconds?
hali
Techdeck: where update_date < sysdate - interval '30' second
