Junior
yello ;)
agent47
hello :D
usn
good morning
iamtrying
Why this is not running now? http://pastebin.com/m3esMJE3
Whats the meaning of having irc room, if you dont answer? are you all spams or bots?
scizzo-
hehe
iamtrying: you should set the environment variables
you are trying to just get oracle started?
iamtrying
scizzo-: thats all? ok many thanks, i am new want to learn it, not finding my way.

scizzo-
oracle uses a different kind of way to get started
first of all you need to start the db system. this is done within oracle when you have logged in to oracle
iamtrying
its too difficult to start in CentOs, nothing works on this distro.
scizzo-
example: sqlplus system@[sid]
then type the password and then type: startup;
this will start the database system
iamtrying: actually centos is good it just takes time to learn
iamtrying: also most people here are probably from the US and so they are not awake
iamtrying
scizzo-: ok, i think i am trying too fast, many thanks
scizzo-
!startup
hmmm
wonder what happened to the uber bot that was in here
iamtrying
background mysql (made me handy cap).
scizzo-
iamtrying: hehe
iamtrying: I would suggest you drop how mysql works when thinking about mysql
iamtrying: umm oracle
iamtrying
ok
all i am now trying just oracle to start, and connect with Zend framework, and minimize uses of mysql (getting unpopular each second).
scizzo-
iamtrying: well learning oracle will help you when looking for jobs
iamtrying: so its not a waste of time
iamtrying
yes true, mysql and oracle users way of thinking is to different, enterprise vs kidds, getting always rejected. want to learn this time serious.
scizzo-
iamtrying: well there are loads of good documents to work with
iamtrying: and courses also online
iamtrying
i am following this one its ok? http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/tutorial/DBXETutorial/index.htm
scizzo-
never seen that one before
iamtrying
my target pl/sql gui/sqlplus , so i am getting that tutorial from here : http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/htdocs/102xelinsoft.html
scizzo-
well learning to start and stop the system is good at first... :)
iamtrying: so have patience
that is the best advice I can give you
once you have the em control center running you will find the power of oracle
iamtrying
scizzo-: yes, one thing i am trying to figure out now, is i can open http://localhost:5500/em but i am failed to start "sqlplus system@sid"
scizzo-
well its not system@sid
the sid is the session id
that is: orcl, bigcoolserver or whatever you named it
its the identifier for the database system
iamtrying
i named it "iamtrying" then it should be system@iamtrying
scizzo-
yes
if that does not work
then try: sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
iamtrying
scizzo-: i get this, http://pastebin.com/x2jheFdj

scizzo-
iamtrying: you should really check the env variables for the oracle user
iamtrying
this is my path: /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/bin , is it missing ORACLE_HOME ?
scizzo-
iamtrying: that is the path yes but you need the ORACLE_HOME and so on set also
otherwise the system will not know where to look for the settings and so on
iamtrying
i understand it, but where is the ORACLE_HOME file i should put the path?
scizzo-
no no
you have used linux and unix systems before?
iamtrying
little, now on centos.
scizzo-
hehe ok
environment variables are set to identify and to set certain settings in the system
telling the user/system where to find certain things
the oracle user needs to have a bunch of different kind of variables set to be able to find its settings and where to look for what
iamtrying
ok
scizzo-
iamtrying: you should really try to find a better howto on this
iamtrying
scizzo-: i did it, still same, http://pastebin.com/tPhHX5cc
scizzo-
iamtrying: that is not really correct I am afraid
the variables are not the same everywhere
iamtrying
ok, i am confused, let me google. thank you scizzo-
http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/tech/sql_plus/htdocs/faq101.html#A4828 i have sp1us.msb, it has world permission chmod -R 777 mesg/
ok now i found the correct one. http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Oracle-9i-Fedora-3-Install-HOWTO/sect_04.html
Junior
rethorical question: I have a table product_price. except from other columns i have createed a function that queries the product_price_id and product_price quite often. Should i create a index on product_price_id (product_price) ?
iamtrying
scizzo-: i made it hahaha? http://pastebin.com/XY2MKcqf
DiscordianUK
On CentOS 5.4 I'd do an installl of Oracle-XE from the rpm as root
It works perfectly for me
Sets everything up and does the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script
It's what I use in my small CentOS VM
My brief notes : http://discordianuk.wordpress.com/2009/10/07/installing-oracle-xe-on-fedora-11/
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: ok i am keeping a note on this. because i dont know Oracle months ago, didn't had that *rpm file, i intalled it yesterday when you told me, i went back to the site, and i see there is Oracle XE, i was thunderd, they changed it, the mannual that i have is different then, the mannual they have now for Oracle-XE
DiscordianUK
Oracle-XE is their free product , within the constraints of it's license , limited to 1Gb RAM, 1 CPU, up to a 4Gb database
But ideal for anyone learning Oracle
I know that the Oracle-XE works on CentOS,Fedora11 and Fedora12
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: how do to uninstall my whole running oracle?
DiscordianUK
Oracle-XE rpm that is
iamtrying
and put Oracle-XE that you recommended.
DiscordianUK
I dunno how to undo your install that's the problem with installing unpackaged stuff on a packaged distro like CentOS
To install Oracle-XE just download the rpm and as the root user do yum localinstall oracle-xe...*rpm
That will pull in any dependcies as well that Oracle needs
iamtrying
Yes thats the best standard, i liked centos. but .. i want to, problem is now i have to learn how to uninstall my running one.
DiscordianUK
Note that it won't setup a profile for the Oracle user
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: my current oracle doesnt have any service/ its in directory (like portable oracle). should i just remove all files? then its uninstalled!
DiscordianUK
But you can do that by copying the /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/oracle_env.sh to oracle's .profile in it's home dir
iamtrying
ok, let me try that, i dont want unstandard way oracle install inside centos. because yum install is best. i want to do in that way..
brb
DiscordianUK: did oracle allow "as root" to install, i had problem before for install (then i created oracle username).
DiscordianUK
yes I did the rpm install as root
On all 3 installs I've done
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: wow, thanks there is lot of things changed.
DiscordianUK
That should for example have set the TNS listener up so it works
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: Package oracle-xe-10.2.0.1-1.0.i386.rpm is not signed after yum localinstall oracle-xe-10.2.0...rpm
DiscordianUK
yum --nogpg localinstall then
You need to learn yum and rpm well if you're going to use CentOS
iamtrying
ok, trying to see problems, and keeping note to never ask again. its doing somthing now, DiscordianUK
DiscordianUK: hahaha, what are you? some kind of hacker, did you write Oracle & Centos?? My god, GO GO centOS, its fantastic, no headach, its ready to use. Thats what my love with centOS, supper, Thanks a lot.
how can i SQL>show tables; // like mysql
DiscordianUK
You can't exactly
Oracle isn't like MySQL
select tname from catalog; will show you a list of the tables you can access
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: oh, this mysql made me handy cap.
ok
TheBonsai
or table_name from all|user|dba_tables;
DiscordianUK
or those indeed
bencc
how do I know if I need cx_oracle with unicode for python-oracle bindings?
iamtrying
Where can i find the following form designers in my oracle-xe. screen shots: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/9iforms_fov.htm
Yes, where can i get this designers for linux/oracle (which is possible to do WSDL/SOAP/REST/RPC method)? ex: http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/products/forms/viewlets/10g/webservices/webservices_viewlet_swf.html
cofeineSunshine
jdeveloper
iamtrying
cofeineSunshine: could not find it, http://pastebin.com/6h7uz1GP
cofeineSunshine
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/index.html
iamtrying
cofeineSunshine: thanks, just 1 info, its for 11g?????? i have 10g installed. will run?
bencc
what is the simplest way to experiment with oracle db?
iamtrying
bencc: getting windowd operating system (never linux/unix), * i am not expert dont take it serious, just gave my personal feedback.
bencc
iamtrying: thanks but it has to be oracle enterprise linux :)
iamtrying
bencc: people used to say linux/unix is for big hackers. but when i started to play oracle, and linux seriously, i see all those softwares have release versions for Winblows, all experiments are easier in winblows then linux/unix.
TheBonsai
in windows, oracle *also* doesn't behave like mysql.
iamtrying
TheBonsai: hehe, but there is always a readymate cd's cracked version available. Linux no pirates ;o( (if i analyze real hackers are sitting in windows).
Everything available i remember i put ubuntu to my sons laptop. You know what happen?
TheBonsai
it's all a matter of the point of view. maybe you can't imagine that other people have trouble using windows, because they did *nix for 15 years, not windows
iamtrying
to test linux/unix power 1 should test in your whole life 1 time. Golden tips: give a 9 year kids Ubuntu/Fedora, he will kill you whole day, you cant work 1. msn , 2. itune jesus..., i put his computer back to windows 7, he is happy now.
TheBonsai
what's that got to do with what i just said?
iamtrying
TheBonsai: sorry, i should have posted it in #orcale-sociel
TheBonsai
no, you just shouldn't start a new topic every sentence you write. anyways, not my problem, i'm not a 9 years old kid (and again: this was totally unrelated to what i said - at best, just focus at oracle software)
(Action) backgrounding
DiscordianUK
And saying all this you expect those of us have invested decades of our life to unix/oracle to take you seriously?
iamtrying
DiscordianUK: no, thats what i tried, i put all best software available distros, kids those used msn/itunes they never coming back to linux/unix because they want same GUI and afraid of losing there Bible gui that winblows provides.
cofeineSunshine: Ok it works, but again in non packaged way installed, http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/7852/snapshot1ed.png
DiscordianUK
The only rpm package Oracle ships is Oracle-XE and some libraries
