Is there any full proof method for getting a list of all instances of Oracle DB's on a server and if they are running? Especially if oratab isn't populated?

TEST
Cool.
How can I set the primary key of a table when the table is made up of an object type? e.g. CREATE TABLE object_names OF object_type

How can I set the primary key of a table when the table is made up of an object type? e.g. CREATE TABLE object_names OF object_type
I have created a Varray type, CREATE TYPE MULTI_TAG AS VARRAY(10) OF VARCHAR(10); but when I try to do SELECT p.tags.count FROM pg_photos p; I get an invalid identifier error on the "count" part. p.tags is a MULTI_TAG, how can I get the number of elements in the MULTI_TAG?
Is anyone actually in here?
Any fragment of an idea would be helpful at this point.
I am completely stuck.

Hey all. What's the GUI tool that's used by the majority of oracle users?

Evet
;/j #ubuntu
err
sytse
wth.. isn't it possible at all in oracle forms PL/SQL to find the access key used for an item? (eg get_*_item_property(*, LABEL) doesn't work, it returns double ampersands as single ampersands, and doesn't return single ampersands at all)
(there wouldn't be an oracle forms-related IRC channel would there?)
usn_work
good morning
this is an oracle related channel, if you ask about forms, this is fully ok
sytse
that I know, but there are very few people with forms expertise here
usn_work
I'd daresay there are rerely people with forms experienace at all ;) Especially if you are talking about the non-webforms ancestors
sytse
anyway, there's a procedure here that goes through all menu items, and replaces the label in some of them (we have like a string replace policy on some strings, because eg some of our customers prefer 'client', and others prefer 'patient'), but this drops the access keys.. it's very aggravating
usn_work: I'm working with forms 10g atm, so the concentration of people with forms experience in this room is off the charts, but they don't know anything about this problem ;-)
usn_work
hehe ;)
stede
is it possible to select a row which timestamp column is a specific time of each day .. so it returned e.g. row which timestamps are between 8:00 and 8:05 of each day?
sytse
I count 10 people in 1 room with months to years of professional forms experience, including one with many years of forms and reports experience and even forms and reports _teaching_ experience ;-)
though nobody here has extensive experience with extending forms (with java code) sadly
depending on your definition of 'extensive' :)
stede
is it possible to select a row which timestamp column is a specific time of each day .. so it returned e.g. row which timestamps are between 8:00 and 8:05 of each day? <--- okay WHERE EXTRACT(HOUR FROM col) can do the job ... but i don't know if that is realy "quick"
hali
stede: either extrac tthe hour or just compare datcol between to_date(...) and to_date(...)
stede
hali: simple comparing would not work for me, I want to get e.g.each row from 8:00h of each day, from e.g. 1st Jan until now
dmarkey
any siebel heads here?
hali
stede: you can compare on to_char for that as well
stede
hali: like this? to_char(acqime, 'HH24 MI')='08 0'
hali
and include the full date as well if you need
'YYMMDDHH24MI'
stede
hali: no, i only need hour and minute ... so if i want i can fetch any value with the time of e.g. 8:05 from each day
hali: i will test it which is faster ... EXTRACT or to_char
hali: if you want to know, EXTRACT is faster: http://privatepaste.com/0e2c96ce89

Evet
can i freely use oracle 10g express edition for my web apps?
usn_work
yes

higuita
hi... anyone knows if its possible to put a fixed background image in the oracle forms (ie: no background resize when people resize the browser)?
usn_work
Evet, you will experience technical constraints, but if they are ok you are license free
Evet
usn_work: i've just discovered the limits
usn_work
:)
Evet
technical constraints are only resource usage limitations?
usn_work
yes, and missing features
XE is basically Enterprise edition, but resource limits, no java and no RMAN
http://www.oracle.com/database/product_editions.html
Evet
it may still help me to discover oracle database, but it wont make me a dba :(
usn_work
you become a DBA by employment
but if you want to discover oracle, use Oracle EE in non-production, and learn features
learn to use features
Evet
experience will be good
oh, youre right
i've downloaded the ee
usn_work
maybe some certification prep books or DBA handbooks from Oracle Press may help as well
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/homepage
There are good 2-day-self studies to be found
Evet
omg, thats really good
thank you very much usn_work
usn_work
np
Evet
let me ask you something
are dba certs special to softwares?
usn_work
Dont understand.
Are you talking about vendors or version numbers?
Or products?
Evet
usn_work: no, are there common general databased administrating certifications, or all certs are specified to products
like
mssql cert, oracle cert
(Action) is sorry about her english
usn_work
the DBA job greatly differs between the vendors, because the approach to make a RDBMS work is different
so the certs are Vendor-, Product- and Version specific
If you do an Oracle DBA cert, you will have to renew it at least for each major release (1g, 11g, 12x)
If you do a MS SQL cert, it's nearly useless for oracle products
And, my opinion, a serious DBA can't have more than one focus, I hardly find the time to keep up with Oracle's new features. To test them, know them, collect experience with them. Find Bugs, work around them. Really time consuming.
Evet
usn_work: which system administrating certs find acceptance by oracle dba's and their employers? (especially for unix)
i thought rhce, but im not sure
usn_work
I think anything on Unix has its market. Oracle itself pushes its RHEL derivate, OEL, most at the moment. But also AIX, Solaris, Linux in general
More or less useful might be Windows as well
Evet, in what country are you?
Evet
usn_work: turkey
usn_work
mh, no clue about the regional needs there, only know central europe
linkd
Which is faster guys, a function that fetches something via a select or a subquery. Both as part of a parameter for a result column? A coworker asks and I'm not confident but I think that they're the same and the best way really is to outer join. Which is the fastest?
usn_work
Heavily depends. Using afunction keeps oracle from merging the view, which could be way faster if the where conditions are mergeable.
Try to generate an execution plan, and compare YOUR case
linkd
Okay thanks for your response :-) it's hard to easily tell. Especially when multiple columns are being created on the same criterion using cross-tabular data
usn_work
Your only chance is to test it, and do an educated decision based on a real execution plan
linkd
Good call.
usn_work
(do not use explain plan)

hi all
how to fix this error: http://pastebin.com/SUhNTD5B thanks

yes, sorry, easy ...
Thankx

could anyone tell me which scripts do the orainventory mappings after 11g installation?
usn_work
explain "orainventory mappings" please
Rudemeister
yes please
usn_work
miamano!
miamano
yes
usn_work
explain "orainventory mappings" please
miamano
after the installation you have to run fixup scripts
root.sh
and the another one
this made some kind of registartion for the orainventor
z
usn_work
you are confusing something
miamano
maybe
usn_work
root.sh and so on are preparation scripts
they are preparing the environment
and making entries into oratab etc.
But oraInventory is managed by the runInstaller
miamano
usn_work: ok, thx
usn_work: Execute the root.sh script as the root user to complete the
installation, and click OK.
from the installation guide
Rudemeister
yes, it workds

Hello everyone
I would like to create an Oracle Query to return the first two duplicates of an ID
so for example if the data would normally have rows with id... 1,1,1,2,3,3,3,3 I would like to get back 1,1,2,3,3
any suggestions?
usn_work
rek55, what's "first" or "last" in your terms? The order of a table isn#t guaranteed
do you order otherwise?
rek55
usn_work, i figured it out by using row_number() over(partition by id order by id)
and then wrapped that in another select * from ... where row_num <= 2
usn_work
yeah
rek55
ridiculous queries this homework is making me do
usn_work
cool stuff
rek55
i also got this really weird bug with group by
usn_work
tnx for feedback
rek55
i was returning an ID, X, and Y. I wanted to find out how many occurancies there were for each X,Y in an ID
so I did group by id,x,y order by count(*) desc
which worked, except that every x y ended up being the same thing
usn_work
Which version?
rek55
in order to make it work I had to have x and y in an object rather than just as columns
10g
err
maybe 11
the server i think is 11
usn_work
select * from v$version
rek55
11.1.0.7.0
usn_work
ok
Can you give me the whole statement for that issue?
to reproduce it
rek55
yeah sure one sec
hmm
brig
select id, rnm from (
select id,row_number() over (partition by id order by id) rnm
from tmp
)
where rnm <= 2
rek55
i'll need to write it up a little differently
be a sec.
brig
rek55: for you
rek55
yeah brig, i already got that. but thankyou.
brig
=)
rek55
wow i'm having some real difficulty reproducing this error
usn_work, i'll have to just send the whole thing to you
usn_work
sorry, got to go now
cu soon

I have a TNSListener service setup, tnsnames.ora has the info, tnsping servicename returns OK, but when I do sqlplus user/pass@serverice, it says TNSListener can not find service name
Dormir
HeatHawk[AP3]: has the database been started? do you have the right name?
has the instance registered with the listener?
HeatHawk[AP3]
I fixed it
hosts= localhost doesn't work, need the fqdn :\

Hi all. Is it possbile to clone a database from a Solaris (SPARC) platform to a Solaris (x86) platform by copying the data/control and redo files and using a "CREATE CONTROLFILE" script?
