hi there
usn_work
good morning
yogione
anyone know of a hosting company with Oracle database support
Trengo
yogione we'll do it for the right price
yogione
I just need an account - 10 g will do
about 1 GB tablespace to start with
what are the options
Trengo
is there a market for shared oracle hosting?
yogione
well - my dev is really good with Oracle, he doesn't want to learn anything else
where are your servers located
DiscordianUK
XE will do for up to 4Gb of tablespace

Trengo
portugal, but we dont have shared hosting
xe is very nice for smaller setups
DiscordianUK
I run XE happily in 512Mb of RAM in a CentOS VM
Trengo
but its all dedicated
yogione
I was tring to setup xe on 256 slice - slicehost
It was not working
DiscordianUK
If it's a real VM installing XE on either CentOS or Debian should be a cinch
Trengo
rpm install, its all done for you
yogione
Ubuntu is the distro I have - should be similar to debian ?
DiscordianUK
yes should I imagine there are .debs for XE
yogione
yes
Trengo
what will you be serving? a website?
yogione
Trengo - yes
Trengo
php?
DiscordianUK
Yeah I could do an install myself on CentOS but the rpm makes it easy
yogione
java / tomcat
Trengo
oh cool
that makes it a lot easier
yogione
I guess - I can get a bigger slice - 512 slice, choose debian distro and try it
Trengo - what would you charge - just for a small account
Trengo
yogione i wouldnt, i dont have shared offers, dedicated only
yogione
how much is a dedicated - expensive I guess.
Trengo
very
about a hundred a month
yogione
that would be how much GB tablespace
RAM ?

Trengo
80GB 1GB
yogione
ok. Thanks. I will come to you when I need to scale ...
can you give me your email please
Oracle XE on ubuntu on home server (basement) -- using dyndns service -- connect to java app on slicehost - should work for development ?
DiscordianUK
possibly I don't have a clue about Ubuntu
yogione
ubuntu is same as debian - I use "sudo apt-get install"
instead of "rpm"
http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex - works on the local machine.
DiscordianUK
I don't know debian either
(Action) only does RHEL/centos/fedora and solaris
yogione
ignoring the ubuntu part - the concept of dyndns / Oracle xe (home server) / java app on slice host is feasible ?
DiscordianUK
Well I suppose so depending on the data latencies
It'd be much faster if the Oracle instance was local to the app
yogione
thanks.
DiscordianUK
and dyndns takes a while to update
whilst it's doing that your service is down
yogione
I can get a static ip from my DSL provider - not sure how much that costs
Evet
how to install oracle 11g as root on linux?
DiscordianUK
Use the installer
You have to do the install as the oracle user
Death4Life
Do I need the oracle client to install DBD::Oracle?
DiscordianUK
yes
Death4Life
ok :(
I can't install it without X right?
DiscordianUK
but it's part of Oracle server I thought anyway
Death4Life
well
I want to connect to a database on another host
DiscordianUK
generally you need X yes
then you need oracle client yes
Death4Life
I'll go on with figuring out how to get X forwarding to work :p
DiscordianUK
ssh -X user@host
Death4Life
yeah, but on windows? :p
I probably need the 'Runtime'?
DiscordianUK
Depends what you plan to do
on the client side
Do you need sqlplus?
Death4Life
just need DBD::Oracle
DiscordianUK
I know *very* little about Windows
(Action) only uses Linux as a desktop
Death4Life
I'm gonna just install Runtime then
let's see if that works
Evet
DiscordianUK: "oracle" is the oracle user, right?
DiscordianUK
You need an user called oracle in a group called dba
Death4Life
DiscordianUK: Runtime isn't enough. I'm missing some .mk file
ognna install something else now :p
DiscordianUK
heh
Death4Life
to uninstall
do I just remove the /app/.../client/ dir?
DiscordianUK
I told you I don't do Windows
Death4Life
talking linux here :)
DiscordianUK
I have no idea what Linux you're on
Death4Life
ubuntu
DiscordianUK
If it's packaged I'd remove the package
Death4Life
it's not :(
DiscordianUK
Tough luck
(Action) uses CentOS and it's nicely packaged
And if it wasn't I'd package it myself
Death4Life
bah won't work :s
DiscordianUK
what error are you getting?
Death4Life
can I copypaste,
?
http://pieter.pastebin.com/MAFunivH pasted it there :)
DiscordianUK
let me look
That library libclntsh is in the client package
oracle-instantclient-basic
Death4Life
oh
found it
probably has more to do with my environment variables :$
DiscordianUK
yes probably
Death4Life
ok
that's fixed
