hello all, what would cause oracle to stop writing to it's alert log...the database is still available but I don't have any thing in my alert log since 2am....up to that point I was seeing redo log switches regularly...and then...nothin
ampex
spcshpopr8r: are you sure it's still switching redo log files?
spcshpopr8r: is the filesystem where the alert log should be written ful?
full
spcshpopr8r
ampex: I will confirm
peculiar...http://pastie.org/private/aaw8z4z8p5ivz6lreqzk7q
almost twelve hours of no redo activity recorded...I'm not sure what to make of it...not real familiar with how this db is setup or used
tijnie
spcshpopr8r, make a manual redolog switch. See whether it appears in your alert-log
spcshpopr8r
tijnie
So I guess the system is actually writing to your alert log
(hmmmm that depends on what time it is in your place ofcourse :-))
spcshpopr8r
tijnie: yeah...I'm not sure what happened between 2:45 am and 2pm, but around 2:45 am a long running user process apparently terminated
its 3:15 pm here in lovely Tacoma Wa
tijnie
(hehe..it's 00:15 here in Den Haag, Netherlands.)
Anyway... a long running process can be anything. But the procees doesn't have to be logging.
So, with no further knowledge of the system, I would say everything is fine.
spcshpopr8r
tijnie: yeah...seems so to me...thank you

tijnie
spcshpopr8r, Great...that is a perfect excuse for a midnight beer.
goodnight
spcshpopr8r
cheers! I'll drink to that.
tijnie
:-)
knandan
HI..
i have a query regarding the command option "excluding/including new values" while creating mview log..
whats the difference?
tijnie
knandan, have a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/statements_2002.htm#i2227005 (on that page search for "new values")
knandan, as far as I understood from reading the docu. it applies to materialized view logs.
Never used it, so I can't help you any further.
knandan
tijnie: thanks for the response..
was away for long ..
tijnie
Your welcome. No problem, I hope it helps you along.
phimic
hi all
i have setup a oracle11 client on windows connecting to a oracle-rac via odbc driver
knandan
tijnie: I saw that link earlier..i am new to databases..so a naive question..If this log is for a table on which you have a single-table materialized aggregate view, and if you want the materialized view to be eligible for fast refresh, then you must specify INCLUDING.
phimic
where i can find logfiles for the client?
knandan
whats the meaning of "single-table materialized aggregate view"
MaL0_
hi
tijnie
knandan, have a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96520/mv.htm
knandan, it's a bit of an old link but...maybe you learn something :-)
knandan, Single table :materialized view doesn't contain joins. The join is build from one table.
MaL0_
does somebody know's if oracle application server cluster by default do session persistence ?
tijnie
knandan, aggregate view : aggregate functions are used, like sum() or count() or.....
phimic, What orace11 client are you using? sqlplus?
phimic
tijnie: the oracle 11g client for windows 32 bit
full version with sqlplus
tijnie
phimic, Ah. I'm strictly linux, so I'm not to familiar with the windows cients :-)
phimic, But what is the client called? And why do you need it's logging?
phimic, (I ask it because I never had the need to use the logging of an oracle client :-))
phimic
tijnie: i need the logging for the vsphere4 backed databases which is hosted on a oracle-rac
tijnie
Ah... a cloud. Well unfortunately I can't help you, really have no idea where the logging can be.
knandan
tijnie: thanks again for the help...you are quite helping and friendly...:-)

tijnie
:-)...thats what I like to hear :-)
davo
hi all.
i'm trying to install oracle 10g release2, while configuring my network, the oracle installation instructions say to enter the IP_address hostname.domainname hostname, of my system. how can i find my domain?
mator
davo, from the /etc/hosts file or /etc/resolv.conf
davo, do you have official domain name for your machine designated by network/dns administrator ?
davo
mator: not that i know of. i am just on a simple home PC
mator
davo, windows or linux ?
davo
mator: windows
I am needing to install Oracle10g for an intro database class for college. if i can't get passed the installation warning: Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.. is this going to be a problem ?
nevermind. i disconnected from the internet before installing, and nowi am able to install without getting the DHCP warning. thanks :)
mator
davo, oracle is require machine to have static IP address, or install it just for localhost / 127.0.0.1
davo,
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32002/pre_install.htm#BABIAEEC
sorry this link is for oracle on linux installation
you should read pre-install requisites for installing oracle database on windows
"Database Installation Guide for Microsoft Windows" http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32006/toc.htm
davo
thanks mator
ChrisMcA
Hi all - how would I get a result set of 1 column, where each row is a value returned by SYS_GUID()?
tijnie
ChrisMcA, I probably don't understand your question but how about : select sys_guid() from dual;
ChrisMcA
Hi tijnie, I want to return N rows of sys_guid() in the result set, e.g. 1000 guids in one resultset
tijnie
ChrisMcA, select sys_guid() from all_objects where rownum<=1000;
(assuming that you have more then 1000 rows in all_objects :-))
ChrisMcA
70037 apparently :)
great, that works a treat
cheers tijnie, thanks for the help
tijnie
No problem. good luck

anyone experienced with stuff like : http://mjohal.wordpress.com/2007/01/17/configuring-reverse-proxy-in-front-of-oracleas-10g-sso/#comment-1324

hi, how do i sum counts? i mean lets say ive got select count(*) from... now i use union to get counts from 3 partitions, so i get 3 lines with separate counts from each partition, how about i wanna sum(count(*)) to get one final answer, that is counts from all 3 partitions in total
sytse
select sum(cnt) from (select count(*) cnt from ... union all select count(*) cnt from ...)
btw, I'd use union all and not union to prevent surprises ;-)
(except if union really is appropriate)
Reign1
ok ive lost u, heres what ive got:
select sum(count(*)) as "Total" from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_10) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_11) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_12);
but as you understand, thats not working
sytse
select sum(cnt) "Total" from (select sum(count(*)) cnt from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_10) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_11) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_12));
Reign1
as i only added sum() over count()
sytse
uh
select sum(cnt) "Total" from (select count(*) cnt from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_10) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_11) UNION ALL select count(*) from sysarch.MESSAGES_VB_ACQ PARTITION(M2006_12));
the inline view gives three rows, each with a count, and you sum them using the outer query
Reign1
cnt is temp var?
sytse
it's a column in the inline view
see http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Inline_view for two simple examples of inline views, dunno about a clear and concise explanation of what an inline view does
logically, using an inline view in a from or join clause is equivalent to using a table with the results from that query
(this is quite different from using a scalar subquery, as in http://www.praetoriate.com/oracle_tips_scalar_subqueries2.htm )
monk12
so i have 3 places i see mostly oracle files... doing a search for 'libclntsh.so' finds following: /home/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/client_1, /usr/lib/oracle/11.1.0.1/client/lib/libclntsh.so, /opt/oracle/lib/libclntsh.so
which is the actually oracle client install?
(trying to figure out how previous person installed oracle)
sytse
well, what does $ORACLE_HOME say?
monk12
it says '/home/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/client_1', so guess thats it. what are the other 2 for?
sytse
dunno
mod_cure
does anybody know what this means: OC4J Configuration issue. /home/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_node01_orcl not found. ?
sytse
maybe your /opt/oracle contains a registry of oracle software installed?
Reign1
sytse: thanls, worked
mod_cure
any idea ?
connect / as sysdba <--- when logging in this way. how does it know what the username and password is ? does it say well user from the command line is oracle we will validate against oracle user ?
rizzo
username will always be sys
the os user will have to be in the dba os group
assuming this is on unix/linux
you should see a ops$oracle user in the db in dba_users
or maybe not
ignore those last two lines
mod_cure
rizzo, thank you. i checked the dba group and oracle was in there . cool
rizzo
normally when you install oracle, you specify the oracle user and dba group, so that's normally what is allowed
but any other OS user in the dba group will be able to login as sysdba as well
"sqlplus / as sysdba" is how I normally launch it
mod_cure
cool
I started learning oracle as a hobby(its been a while). now i want to start learning it again. its amazing how the brain forgets. but its easier to pick up the second time. i remember about the user in the dba group etc
tijnie
mod_cure, this type of authentification is "OS authentification"
mod_cure
tijnie, thanks
tijnie
hehe...rizzo gave the answer. I just added some noise :-)
mod_cure
:)
davo
anyone have the textbook, Oracle 10g by Joan Casteel (2006) ?
breakerfall
hi - I'm not sure if this is the relevant place, but I'm attempting to use Oracle Objects and PL/SQL for Oracle 11g
I can't find any documentation stating one way or the other, but I get a warning when trying to create an object with an attribute of type BOOLEAN
I suppose another question may be more useful... how can I enable more useful debugging / error messages via the CLI?
zambaboo
guys, im getting a ORA-19643 and google tells me i should "Specify a smaller incremental-start SCN."
i cant find any info on how to do that if i google that particular string
can someone please tell me what should i be searching for?
tijnie
zambaboo, Are you making rman backups?
zambaboo, Have a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28273/rcmsynta007.htm#i78895 search for "incremental from scn"
