Trengo
how the heck did you manage an OCA when yesterday you couldnt create a database?
RJarett
oca dont need to know sh*t
zasz
lol
RJarett
they just examcram and pay for a class
zasz
he couldn't type dbca ?
i am reading the performance tuning book now... 4 books done
Trengo
thats what i told my boss, i dont need an OCA, it doesnt mean i can do sh*t :P
zasz
that is true trengo
you should still get it though
Trengo
i cant do sh*t anyway!
zasz
oh
are you a dba

Trengo
no
sysadmin
zasz
last 4 chapters in that advanced backups manual was user managed
who does user managed backups anymore
RJarett
<---
zasz
do you think RMAN sucks
RJarett
ahh they mean alter tablespace backups
well snap manager for oracle sort of does that
i love rman
zasz
heh
RJarett
rmans saved my job and many others i have recovered many times over
but user managed backups are still useful
zasz
it's a bit more involved than that, but yea
have you not read the manual
Kaoru_Nagisa
Trengo, if you talk about me and my problems to create a db, it's because i was trying to do it on debian ^^, and i've solved all the pb !
RJarett
zasz: not word for word in like 10 years
when i started at oracle a long time ago i read every manual of every product for almost every os
zasz
i was about to think you were thinking RMAN is the same as it was in 8i
then i'd have to shoot you
RJarett
since then ill just read the upgrade guides, and investigate changes and new features
well the new 10g/11 way is to let oem handle all your backing up
and that terrifies me seeing that
Trengo
Kaoru_Nagisa but the thing is, you didnt seem to know the first thing about oracle a week ago
zasz
no
RJarett
but in oem it says user managed or user specified
zasz
no RJarett i don't think people actually do that
heh
RJarett
zasz: most do nowdays
Trengo
even yesterday you seemed lost trying to create a database
zasz
whaaaat
they use oem for backups
are you kidding me
no that is crazy talk
anyway i'm reading the 10g performance tuning book
Kaoru_Nagisa
Trengo, i know some things, but the problems i got were about oracle AND debian

zasz
after that ill read llg new features
RJarett: you read this:
http://www.amazon.com/Cost-Based-Oracle-Fundamentals-Experts-Voice/dp/1590596366/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1269632107&sr=8-1-fkmr1
the ocm at work said he loves it
Trengo
Kaoru_Nagisa you weren't trying to setup oracle 8i on solaris?
zasz
he is hardcore though, he was a field engineer at oracle
Trengo
how many french guys with japanese nicks are there around :s
zasz
lots of people want to be ninjas i guess
Kaoru_Nagisa
Trengo, a stupid issue i was having, was i'm using x11 forwarding on my windows, and due to java the last windows of dbca to confirm the db creation was not showed... Stupid problem !
zasz
who sets up oracle on debian
Kaoru_Nagisa
Trengo, don't try solaris
zasz, only masochists people
Trengo
Kaoru_Nagisa you sure about it? i've been having the same issue
but since i dont have a license, or a solaris license, i thought it was missing patches
Kaoru_Nagisa
Trengo, no i wanted to say "i've don't try solaris for the moment"
Trengo
solaris is fine
its just dbca that fails
zasz
no dbca is not fail
Trengo
dunno why
zasz
you are the fail!!!!!
just create the database manually then
Trengo
sure
but dbca fails
Kaoru_Nagisa
i've a response file too ;)
zasz
k
Kaoru_Nagisa
but dbca when we can use it, is more friendly ;)

Is somebody looking at that script please? :(
Kaoru_Nagisa
can you audit the table ?
joshuaBoshi
I am not sure. But if I can create it, I should be allowed to put data in it, or no?
How can I find it out?
Kaoru_Nagisa
find what ?
joshuaBoshi
what do you mean by audit the table? I thought you mean if i have privileges
Kaoru_Nagisa
audit the insert statements :)
joshuaBoshi
Sorry, i am new to oracle. I dont know what do you mean by audit :( Its command?
Kaoru_Nagisa
joshuaBoshi, look at this : http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/Auditing_10gR2.php
joshuaBoshi
Kaoru_Nagisa: thanks for help, i thought its a little problem that I just cant see in the script. It was my homework that i had to send until midnight, so its late now... again thanks for help and good night

oh dear
dr0id
has oracle got stored procedures like mysql?
TheBonsai
of course
(if i'm not mistaken, since version 7, about 18 years or so)
dr0id
18 yrs ;-o
:o
=-O
can I use the free version of oracle for my clients?
TheBonsai
you should check the XE license, i don't really know the XE limitations (the instance itself is limited by database size, processors and many features)
dsdel
in one of our teaching rooms is still an oracle 7 book inside the shelf:D
TheBonsai
eew
dsdel
should sell it through ebay as antique
I have todo support now for maxdb too... :/ the customer wanted to spare some money so they haven't bought oracle...
but now they got higher maintenance costs... lower performance and less scalabilty...
(it's an SAP system)
TheBonsai
that's usually the case, yes :)
dsdel
and in long term it will cost them, the double costs as if they would have bought oracle from start...
on the one side, I should be lucky cause I get money for the maintenance - on the other side I would prefer oracle :D
I'm getting nearly 'obsessed' from oracle hehe
and I'm also working with db/2 on mainframes...
usn_work
good morning

bah, searching for ages why an old-style import is so slow in Windows
solofight
i uninstalled oracle services, but the files which occupy around 1.5 GB has not been removed automatically
i just have one empty database
so its not the db size
inside the oracle installation folder there are folders like admin ora90 and oradata
i installed 9i
is it ok if i just delete the entire folder ?
or is there a procedure need to be performed to completely remove oracle from system and along with its files ?
is my question so dumb or its just everyone here are working so busy ?
atealst say that :P
atleast*
usn_work
how did you do the uninstall?
solofight,
solofight
hello usn_work :)
thanks for replying
using universal uninstaller
usn_work
did you delete the Db beforehand using dbca?
solofight
no no
i didnt
usn_work
so it will stay there
solofight
usn_work, ^
no it is ok the db stays
usn_work
as I tried to tell you yesterday, RDBMS and the DB are different things
solofight
but the entire rdbma is in the disk
occupying 1.6 gb
rdbms
usn_work
how did you uninstall it?
or how did you try ;)
did you use runInstaller from $ORACLE_HOME/oui?
Kaoru_Nagisa
