yello ;)
solofight
hello all, am stuk in a critical phase, just now installed oracle 9i in my system, uninstalled because some optional features failed to installed, and reinstalled, now everything got installed but the initial step where it used to ask for the database and sid was skipped because it found the prev database and sid itself, now at the end of installation its asking for sys password and select init.ora flie , i gave password but theres no init<sid>.ora f
ile in my database directory
how can i proceed
am stuck in that screen
need to get this up urgently
anybody there ?
room dead ?
null action :(
TheBonsai
if there already was an empty database, it's better to completely reinstall, since the features you installed afterwards are in the database, at least partially.
so no matter if you will be able to access the db or not, the features need to be installed inside
solofight
TheBonsai, reinstall again ! !
TheBonsai, how do i reinstall ? using the universal uninstallation wizard ?
KeiKurono
morning
TheBonsai
solofight: and btw... why a 9i?!
solofight
TheBonsai, uninstalling products started
because thats the package i have right now
i can upgrade anytime right ?
TheBonsai
solofight: i just said it would be better. you don't sound like you would be glad to do it under database runtime
there are upgrade paths, yes
solofight
TheBonsai, how do you completely uninstall the installed services and everything ?
i uninstalled using the universal installer and uninstaller
but when reinstalling it showed me the prev created db

usn_work
an existing Db is something diffferent that a RDBMS installation
solofight
so howd i delete everything including the existing db
usn_work
runInstaller installs the RDBMS, uninstalling the RDBMS will not touch your databases itself. They can be operated with a new installation again
solofight
to make a new fresh installation
usn_work
use dbca to delete the existing DB before uninstalling oracle
again, "installation" and "build a DB is something entirely different!!
you can perfectly make a new fresh installation and keep existing DBs
it's not MySQL ;)
solofight
:P
i am from that background
usn_work
I know
solofight
lol
usn_work
:)
solofight
ok will start installing and let you know once done
please hang on
usn_work
one hint, solofight
NEVER install & create DB in one step, ok?
solofight
oh.
usn_work
do your install, without creating a DB, and after install succeeds, use dbca to do exactly what you want
solofight
when installation a personal version its asking for creating anc configuring a inbuilt db
usn_work
if you want to patch to another patch level, do it before creating the DB
personal is crap
install std or EE
solofight
oh
ok
will do it now
usn_work
ask if you need further advice, but allow some delay, there's work to do
solofight
okkie :)
now am starting new instllation
and the first screen "File locations" shows me all possible paths i have tried and go an error saying no spaces allowed in previous installations
how does it keep track ! ! though i deleted the residue folders before starting this installation
they got automatically created again
usn_work
did you read a bit about Oracle concepts?
it's not intuitive, and you need a good theoretical basis
we can't fill the gaps here
solofight
please suggest some links

usn_work
What version do you install?
solofight
9i
usn_work
uh
old crap
solofight
yeah
usn_work
I#d suggest using 11g
solofight
i do not have any other versions with me now
usn_work
don't you have a chance to download from technet?
solofight
usn_work, it would take me weeks to complete with my net conn
usn_work
ok
mom, link is coming
solofight
mom !
usn_work
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/homepage
"getting started" should be what you need
solofight
yes
thank you very much
will go through it right away
usn_work
in general, use tahiti.oracle.com for docs of any kind
solofight
usn_work, by providing oracle for free, what does the company gain ?
mysql was a open source, developed using community based approach
unlike oracle which maintains a huge company employing so many people to develope and provide it for free ! ?
whats their revenue model ?
usn_work
eh
Oracle is free for testing purposes
and a reduced version is free for every purpose
but the REAL versions, like SE and EE are really expensive (10000-30.000 EUR per CPU)
but they do not waste time with license key bullsh*t and so on
You usually can download the basic releases just per registration, patches are downloadable via closed support portal
solofight
oh
usn_work
but to use Oracle DB in production, you have to pay the license fee
solofight
hmm
usn_work
?
Oracle's nothing for a "housewife" ;) - in means of money and effort / learning curve
solofight
:p
KeiKurono
can you see errors there? (oracle 8i) datafile '/export/home/oracle/oradata/test/system.dbf' size 500M autoextend on next 10M maxsize unlimited extent management local
hali
can 8i have local extent management?
it's a bit before my time, but check the docs
KeiKurono
yes thx
solofight
usn_work, i installed oracle 9i without database, at the end it says end of install, The installation of oracle 9i was succesfull , but instead of finish button it says next install ! !
does that mean something ?
if i click that it iterates the same procedures from begning
:P
and if i open SQL Plus inside application development it asks for username, password and host string !
where am i suppose to get those from ? while installation it asked nothing regarding these
KeiKurono
solofight try with: conn / as sysdba
solofight
KeiKurono, sorry didnt get you, where do i get username, password and host from ? are you tell to use / as host ?
KeiKurono
i meant from sqlplus commandline, otherwise i'd try user: system, pass: manager, host: your service name
but i'm noob too with oracle
solofight
KeiKurono, can you please explain gthis part host : your service name ?
KeiKurono
the one in tnsnames.ora
usn_work
hey
solofight, you can exit from runInstaller if you have installed
just kick it
now you need "dbca" command
solofight
done
yeah
dbca
usn_work
to create a DB
should be intuitive
at least a bit ;)
solofight
usn_work, clone database creation in progress
usn_work, whats the difference between sys and system password ?
once the db creation was complete it asked me to change both
and i did
usn_work
sys is the owner of the dictionary
system is a root user for the DB
thus both are powerful and dagerous
KeiKurono
when i create a db manually (create database etc....) i have to explicity set the same control files (.ctl) specified in init<db>.ora ?
solofight
owner of the dictionary ?
usn_work
solofight, all dictionary information in oracle is stored in tables
KeiKurono
because i got ORA-00205: error in identifying controlfile
usn_work
they are called "the dictionary" and need an owner
dictionary is database metadata, like object lists etc.
KeiKurono, did you create some scripts with dbca as you have been told?
Do it and learn from them
KeiKurono
i can't do that
usn_work
you can
KeiKurono
don't have X in that machine
usn_work
Use SSH X forwarding, or do it on your workstation and copy the scripts to the machine
SQL is OS platform idependent :)
KeiKurono
i don't have ssh either..
usn_work
do it on your workstation and copy the scripts to the machine
KeiKurono
i don't have oracle in my workstation
usn_work
change this
or use a test server
anything else is useless
solofight, what platform do you use? In means of OS
solofight
usn_work, in that case why do we need seperate user and permission for db and dictionary ?
usn_work, windows for now
cant we have a single user controlling everything ?
usn_work
mh
you can use sys for anything, but it's not recommended since the risk for the dictionary is too high
best practice would be to create a user with DBA rights and lock sys and system
one thing you need sys for, is to shut down / start up the database,it has to be authrenticated as SYSDBA
solofight
usn_work, i agree, my questions is why have two users sys and system ? why not one user to manage all, ofcourse i need to create a seperate user with dba rights
usn_work
SYS is the super-super-user and system the desired operator if you want
it makes sense to seperate the dictionary owner and the operator, doesn't it?
just think about "lets drop all my objects"
brb
solofight
when i open Oracl SQL* Plus, and give username as system, password as mypassword and host as my global db id which is db1st its not logging in
says could not resolve service name
what should i be giving in host ?
host string ?
usn_work
are you on the system you installed the DB?
on
or is it a remote connect?
solofight
yeah
am working on my localhost
usn_work
ok
try sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
in case of an error, please copy&paste command and error in full length
solofight
usn_work
you don't read carefully
"in case of an error, please copy&paste command and error in full length"
COMMAND and error
in full length
I am no clairvoyant
solofight
usn_work, when i open SQL* Plus i get a dialoge where it asks for username, password, and host when i enter system, systempassword, / as sysdba it gave me the pasted error
but when i give ok with plain fields and enter the console where it asks me for username and password, and when i use the same system and systempassword it logs in
am confused
usn_work
please type in
sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
literally
exactly as I typed it
and if there's an error, copy and paste ANYTHING
otherwise I#m out, I become tired
solofight
usn_work
do you use a cmd window?
if not, you souhld :)
open a cmd window
please type in
sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
exactly as I typed it
usually it looks like C:\> sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
solofight
usn_work, yes connected
usn_work
(Action) rolls his eyes ;)
solofight
:)
usn_work
do you get a SQL> prompt?
solofight
yes
usn_work
nice
you are now connected as user SYS AS SYSDBA
