I can't figure out what is wrong. Both of my types in this file ( http://pastebin.com/YiBqi6n6 ) are giving me the error "the decleration of the type of this expression is incomplete or malformed"... Could someone take a look and possibly give me some advice?
PGUSER and PHOTO are created prior to this
and both are also valid

Hello
Grim147
if you update a BLOB column in a row to null does it free up that space ?
idletask
It marks the space as unused, yes
Grim147
idletask: thanks
hali
you can manually shrink the lobsegment

hi, lets say ive executed sql and i dont need it, how to do a rollback?
hali
reign1: 'rollback'
in sqlplus
reign1
hali: i did commit and ended session
how to solve this one?
hali
if there are other people using the tables, you can't really
if not, and you have flashback enabled, just flashback the tables
last case, write a few sql statements to undo what you did (if you can)
you can use workspaces to test statemetns
statements*
if you create a lab workspace you can do whatever you want to the data, then either merge it back to live if you are happy with it or just disgard the workspace
reign1
hali: so you are saying the only solution right now is to invert sqls?
hali
if you can't flashback/restore from back/etc
idletask
Hello again
(Action) has ditched the redo log generation problem for a while
sinesio
hi guys, i'm running a RAC with ASM, if I want to have Dataguard to synchronize this RAC with a single node, do I need ASM on the single node too?
Dormir
sinesio: no, you don't have to have ASM at the dataguard site
hali, you around?
sinesio
ok, and on the RAC site can I have the archived redo logs on my file system? Like /u01/app/oracle/oradata/
hali
depending on what storage they are on, it's possible yes
Dormir
hali: do you know of a way to recreate a controlfile for an rman restore?
I'm drawing a black. I thought for sure there's a way to do it
black=blank
tijnie
Dormir, what version? did you make backups of the controlfiles :"CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;"
Dormir
no, didn't have autobackups on, but that wouldn't help
we're hitting a bug on a restore and the solution is to recreate the controlfile. however, you can't recreate it without the datafiles
I'm missing something, just not sure what
we may have to recreate it in production, but in a restore scenario, that wouldn't work. I'm hoping for a solution that doesn't involve that
hali
Dormir: you can issue CREATE CONTROLFILE from sqlplus without an instance running
Dormir
but the datafiles need to be there, right?
hali
yes
not sure actually, never tried without
i used to run 'backup controlfile to trace' in all my backups a few years back
with generates the statement
Dormir
yeah, that's the problem. we're doing an RMAN restore, so the datafiles aren't there yet
yep, same here. but that was with scripted database backups, not RMAN
I know it's still a supported way to backup the controlfile, so how do you restore an RMAN database to a new server with a controlfile that was backed up to trace?
kiuma
hello, a short question: is it the same at performance level to execute these two queries : "select a.id, b.id from a, b WHERE a.id = b.a_id" and "select a.id, b.id from a join b on a.id = b.a_id" ?
idletask
kiuma: should be

kiuma
thx
sinesio
does anyone know what agent do I have ton install to get SNMP traps working for my oracle DB?
I need to receive traps on an external platform like HP openview
I'm running oracle db 11gr2
hali
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/em.102/b16244/chap2.htm#CHDCCEFB
first hit in google if you search for oracle snmp trap
sinesio
yes I know google :)
but that is for version 10g Release 2
and like I said i'm running 11gr2
dont even have those required folders
mentioned on that tutorial
markl_
sorta a n00b here, if i am in sqlplus and run shutdown immediate - shouldn't dbshut do the same thing?
sqlplus shutdown works but dbshut doesn't
ah looks like i don't have any oratab entries
onkara
hi is there a way to do truncate with nologging hint /*+ append */ ???
Dormir
why would you need to?
onkara
bcoz I don't want any logging on truncate
Dormir
truncates don't log
well, let me change that. truncate has minimal logging compared to the delete
truncate is considered DDL as well. when you truncate, there's an implicit commit. delete is DML. there is no implicit commit

hello, does anyone know if oracle offer an SQL certification and if so what it is called? i have been searching but all the links i follow lead to the oracle university site which is currently down >.<

rdg
oracle noob, and not at all a DBA.. my Oracle jdbc is throwing exceptions claiming lack of available resources (ORA-12519).. I suspect someone else's application is hogging available connections.. can someone tell me what I need to search for to figure that out
screv
thanks dormir
onkara
Dormir: thanks
rdg
if I get ORA-12519 "TNS: no appropriate service handler found"... what does that mean exactly
the database in question is in oranames.tns
my application does 27 inserts before the oracle jdbc throws this exception
it a connection limit being hit? too many sessions? something else in the DB that could be wrong?
Dormir
ORA-12519 means the listener doesn't know of the service you're connecting to. does your app make 27 different connections? Have you tried a simple connection, select from dual. then exit?
MaL0
rdg, it's a rac db ¿¿??
rdg
the listener being a listener service in the oracle instance, right?
and it's saying whatever my app is looking for it can't find it?
I don't think my app makes 27 different connections.. i'm using the oracle jdbc per their docs, i would assume it creates a persistent connection
even if it creating 27 connections.. the code closes it at the end of each iteration.. so it shouldn't be a connction leak
i'm confused because the same bit of code works for a bit before the exception kicks in.
MaL0
rdg it's oracle 10 ?
rdg
10g
it might be that it's not caching the connection.. i'm gonna explicitly set it to true in my code and see if that fixes it
MaL0
rdg, how many processes di you have set on the db ?
did
look at this: http://fherrerav.blogspot.com/2007/06/ora-12519-tnsno-appropriate-service.html
rdg
i know nothing about the DB
we don't have a DBA.. it was installed and turned on by a programmer
and we all live within it's poor confines
so .setConnectionCachingEnabled(true) was not the solution
MaL0: what am I supposed to be looking at in there (for starters, mi espanol is muy mal)
