hello
RJarett
howdy
zasz
how's it going RJarett
RJarett
okie dokie
just sitting in a dark datacenter waiting for a lun to format

okaratas
oh my god
I am oracle enterprise database is restored.
Finished restore at 07-FEB-10
:)
RJarett
it restored in the future
thats magic
07 doesnt exist yet to most of the world...
okaratas
RJarett, I am from Turkey :)
Turkey date is 07 February 2010
RJarett
Selam. or Gobble gobble. which ever turkey you are from
okaratas
RJarett, selam :)
sorry
How can I do rman backup?

RJarett
what do you mean?
are you in archive log mode?
okaratas
yes
my oracle database archivelog mode on :)
RJarett
Theres many many ways to backup with rman. You need to figure what sort of recovery you need to do
okaratas
and
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/backup/yedek\ora_df_%t_%s_%p' maxpiecesize 2G;
what is the maxpiecesize?
What is the truth maxpiecesizes?
I get a rman backup, but constitute 65 each file..
:)
RJarett
that means if you have a 100gb datafile, itll make 50 file pieces
thats because alot of tape and backup apps cant handle larger than 2 or 4gb
most can now though
so you dont need the maxpiece option
okaratas
RJarett, okey thank you
what is the stable size?
2 GB or 4 GB?
RJarett
doesnt matter these days
okaratas
result?
RJarett
your pieces will be large, but usually just the size of the data in the datafile minus whitespace
or, if you use image copy backups, you have an exact copy of the datafile
in your flash recovery area.
And then if you have a problem, you switch to the copy, recover and are back running in seconds or minutes
okaratas
I am sorry
what is the flash recovery area?
and where?
:)
RJarett
what version are you on?
okaratas
9i
:)
RJarett
ok you wouldnt have it
or the image copy feature yet
its time to upgrade...
okaratas
hm okey
I will make a future time... I will upgrade to 10g...
thank you RJarett, nice too meet you :)
RJarett
10g isnt supported anylonger either
okaratas
what is the support version?
RJarett
11
okaratas
thanks
:)
RJarett, I have a question
Can be used without license 11g?
Do you absolutely need license?
RJarett
no
just like all oracle versions
just dont get caught
okaratas
sorry, what is mean caught?

RJarett
If oracle finds out you run it without a license, they will sue you
zasz
then someone will make love to you in prison
visik7
I just installed oracle 10g on my mac, but I dunno the username to access to localhost:5560/isqlplus
it doesn't ask me for a user/pass
during the installation
is there a way to reset the password ?
okaratas
clear

I have a set of SAN disks which are together in a single disk group in ASM. Can that disk group be used by two different hosts simultaneously to run two different DBs?
RJarett
between hosts if in a RAC install. or 2 dbs if on the same host i think
but i could be wrong. im not a ASM fan.
TomJ
Ok thanks
will look it up
They're not RAC, one is primary one is secondary
I was hoping to start a staging DB on the secondary host, but I wont have any space unless I can use the spare space in my single disk group
s/secondary/standby/
What dont you like about ASM?
I just always assumed it made most sense to give complete control to Oracle when it will have all the disks to itself. a filesystem in the way seems like it can only hurt
RJarett
unless something goes wrong w/ ASM
or you need quick recovery
ive seen enough asm driver issues or raw device mapping issues i dont trust it
TomJ
Fair enough
zasz
don't mind him, use ASM
TomJ
hehe. well I do already
zasz, do you know if it's possible for two non-RAC hosts to use a single ASM diskgroup to run two different DBs?
RJarett
TomJ: run up VMWare and give it a try in 2 VMs
TomJ
hm interesting idea. how would I simulate share storage? Just give both VMs access to the same disk file?
RJarett
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleDB10gR2RACInstallationOnCentos4UsingVMware.php
do that to the point it talks about doing the rac config
and then just run up an instance on each vm
MTecknology
How hard is it to check if a number is divisble by 7 without using MOD() or REMAINDER() ?
pretty dead channel
Reign1
hi, anyone know i heared something of that i must turn off db vault option while upgrading db (RHEL, 11.1 -> 11.2)
if so, what exactly should i uncheck or do
simply disabled vault, nevermind
TomJ
I still can't work out whether, with ASM, I can use a single disk group to host two different databases on two different hosts. Anyone know?
rizzo
not on diff hosts
asm only hosts local instances
otherwise, yes, multiple instances can use the same disk group
MaL0
hi
does somebody have any experience on setting MPM worker on apache's oracle application server 10.1.3 ?
RJarett
well why would it be any different w/ oracles apache than any other apache?
what performance issue are you seeing?
MaL0
RJarett we don't have any performance issue, but every week are going to access +/- 300 users more
RJarett
300 at the same time?
MaL0
and we don't have too much memory free, and I sawk that mpm worker works really good
RJarett nope 170 on the morning and 130 evening
rservers
I would think it's going to depend on the application or whatever you have apache serving.
Or just add in more ram.
MaL0
aha
RJarett
yeah the memory wont be really apache threads but the app server processes
MaL0
one min.
the problem is that I didn't size the server and now say to the "client company" that we need more memory ....
RJarett
And?
was 300users more previously known abotu when buying the system?
MaL0
yes
we have 5 servers with 4 Gb every one
but every process uses 10 Mb of ram and wee need 3000
30Gb of memory only for apache
rservers
wow 4gb of ram per server
uhh
Should make up some good excuse and get more ram.
MaL0
hehhee, yes
4 gb/server more
noway, it's a good idea to use mpm worker or not ? on a normal app
rservers
yeah at least
you could try it, but don't think it would help much.
also ram isn't that expensive, depending on what hardware you have.
MaL0
they are blade
rservers
x86 blades, like intel/amd? dell/hp blades?
MaL0
yeah
rservers
yeah probabally wouldn't be to bad then.
or take memory out of other blades lol
RJarett
this is my MPM settings on a box w/ apache 2.2 that gets flooded with hits at random times (like after a mass mail, or if an exec is on CNBC)
http://pastebin.com/d7bf6860b
but like i said before, its not so much memory related w/ apache. since the app server is where all the memory is sucked through
MaL0
lets see
RJarett
increase your start servers #
MaL0
ok
that's for oas ?
RJarett
thats for a apache/tomcat setup
but apache is apache. its just a listener
MaL0
you define the two settings for worker and prefork ?
RJarett
what apache version do you have in ias10?
MaL0
oas 10.1.3.3
apache version I can't remember now
RJarett
thats not an apache version
apachectl -v
MaL0
yeah, I don't have the access to the server now.
vpn's not working
RJarett
you dont have an ssh tunnel gateway?
hit the server with a bad request and see if its int he 500 or 404 error
MaL0
it's on a private network
I will have access tomorrow
thank you very much RJarett
for your time
TomJ
I am trying to archive data out of a partitioned table. There are 5 partitions I want to archie, which between them have 250 subpartitions. I understand how I can exchange them each into an empty table - those empty tables could then be in a tablspace I take offline. but can I exchange them into one big table?
I mean can I take subpartitions 1-200 of tableA and make them subpartitions 1-200 of tableB?
RJarett
yes. or you could make each subpartition its own table
TomJ
I know how to make each subpartition its own table
how do I make each subpartition a subpartition of a different table?
do I have to do a double exchange? SubPart1 of TableA -> temp_table_1 -> SubPart1 of TableB ?
because I see how to excahnge a subpart for a table, then a table for a subpart. but not how to exchange a subpart with another subpart
