Hi! Did somebody try to install Oracle on Debian?
i am trying to install it from about week, and i have still problems with packages
oracle installer says that i have not any make package, (and 19 another packages too), and gives me expected version, but for all these packages, i have greater versions...

a30a37: Try http://diznix.com/oracle/goal :) (Or Doris if using a 32-bit system)
This is a graphical Oracle intallation preparation tool (for which I take NO credit - it's all Howard Dizwell's work).
Many more articles on that site too. Good luck!

hi, if i wanna use data compression, enough to do tablespace compression? or i must do it on all levels (tablespace, table, row) on 11gR2?
is there any guide how to upgrade oracle from 11r1 to 11r2?
on rhel4/5?
corpxicle
checked oracle.com ?

so do i get this right? if i use compression on tablespaces in 11r2, ill save up quite some space and also will get faster selects, but inputs (inserts, updates) or even deleting will take longer, than noncompressed ?
hm, whats wrong with compress for all operations? http://pastebin.com/m2f89bbb3

Hey folks.. how might i get a list of tables with the rowcount other than executing SELECT COUNT(*) FROM TABLE for every table?
With MySQL i would do something like... SELECT TABLE_NAME, TABLE_ROWS FROM TABLES WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'SCHEMA1'
and that would be from the information_schema database
alter table TABRANDCO
disable CONSTRAINT DWH.FK_TAMODEL_TABRANDCO;
I get the error "Error: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended".
Thoughts?

RuslanPopov
look at 'alter table' docs

RuslanPopov: Yeah i couldn't see any problems with the syntax above :s

DWH.
see modify constraint clause

RuslanPopov: I'll check it out cheers :)]

should I be able to install Grid Control 10.2.0.5 with Oracle Database 11gr2?
on the certification matrix it is saying that GC 10.2.0.5 supports 11gr2, but repository version has to be something like 11.1.0.7

hi i install on my linux an oracle client but when i try to use sqlplus i have this message error :
Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory
mgolisch
did you set ORACLE_HOME?
kok93
thanks for your help
i have not a oracle server on this server i have only oracle client installed
mgolisch
and?
it still needs to know the path to its stuff
kok93
i write : ORACLE_HOME= /usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.4/
mgolisch
and it still doenst work?
is that dir correct?
also did you use export?
kok93
i have the same error and yes i export this variable
mgolisch
it wont be used in the new processes environemt unless you export that var
also that will only work for the current shell
is the requested file present under your ORACLE_HOME?
like in $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/mesg
kok93
mgolisch, :the file sqplus is on /usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.4/client64/bin/sqlplus
mgolisch : are you shure it's variable is not good ?
mgolisch
but is there a $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/mesg/sp1<lang>.msb
if not you probably set ORACLE_HOME wrong

kok93
mgolisch : i have not the file sp1<lang>.msb
mgolisch : i install : oracle-instantclient-sqlplus-10.2.0.4-1 oracle-instantclient-basic-10.2.0.4-1
mgolisch
lang would be something like us or en or something
kok93
mgolisch : ok but actually i have not this file perhaps i have not installed all packages oracle no ?
mgolisch
íis there anything but that client64 dir in /usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.4 ?
maybe /usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.4/client64 would be the correct path for ORACLE_HOME

ALTER TABLESPACE test_ts DEFAULT NOCOMPRESS; <- what does DEFAULT mean? does it go along with NOCOMPRESS or its for something else?
RuslanPopov
i think t means that this tablespace is default tablespace for all users
but you have to check this information within oracle manual
kok93
hi i have a question please i try to connect to a oracle server but when i try with sqlplus i have this error message : ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist thanks for your help
dreamil
hi
I have a problem in my query
My data is like this:
fileid, op, start_date, end_date
1, in, date1, date2
2, in, date3, date4
3, out, date5, date6
4, in, date7, date8
I want to get min and max dates from each group partitioned over fileid first and op later
Is it possible to get that using multiple column names in partition by?
zasz
the old in and out
dreamil
sorry for mistake in sample data, the file id is all same for rows
zasz: can you point me to something which can help me?
zasz
I haven't worked with partition by but if you stick around i'm sure someone will help
dreamil
zasz: ok
(Action) broadcasting my query again in hope of finding someone to help
My data is like this:
1, in, date1, date2
1, in, date3, date4
zasz
don't
dreamil
zasz: ok

hi guys
i have the datafiles from one oracle database, and a fresh install of oracle. where do i start, if i want to restore the database into this new installation?
dreamil
Hi all again
can i use "partition by " using 2 columns in order defined by 3rd column?
Xgc
dreamil: Sure.
dreamil
Xgc: how?
Xgc: should i paste some sample data rows here for ref?
Xgc
dreamil: Just the way you'd expect... OVER (PARTITION BY c1, c2 ORDER BY c3) ...
dreamil
Xgc: doesnt work, I tried this
Xgc
The "doesn't work" problem. I've seen that.
dreamil
Xgc: okay wait, it works
Xgc: now, next is Iwant to select min/max from each of the groups formed
Xgc: actually the query is not giving desired groups.
if my data is like this:
fileid,op,startdate,enddate
1,in,d1,d2
1,in,d3,d4
1,out,d5,d6
1,in,d7,d8
Now, running partition over file_id,op order by timestamp (not shown in data above) should give me 3 groups
but it gives me 2 groups (one of "in" and other "out")
the sample data shown is ascending ordered by timestamp
Xgc
dreamil: You can refer to many of the aggregate functions in windows. You can use MAX and MIN in this context.
dreamil
Xgc: yes, but the group formation is not happening correctly for me
Xgc
dreamil: You probably misunderstand what anaytical functions provide.
dreamil
i get only 2 groups (split over op) whereas Ishould get 3 groups if it honots timestamp
s/honots/honors
Xgc
Sorry. I didn't see yor select.
your
Show the full select you're talking about.
dreamil
select file_id,op,min(start_date) over (partition by file_id,op order by timestamp_in) as start_date,max(end_date) over (partition by file_id,op order by timestamp_in) as end_date from file_journey
Xgc
dreamil: Don't use the term "group". That might cause confusion with actual aggregates of groups associated with GROUP BY.
dreamil
Xgc: ok
Xgc: Ishould say "partitions" probably?
Xgc
or windows.
dreamil
ok
Xgc
dreamil: Did you check any of the online articles on this subject?
dreamil
Xgc: yes, i have been trying for last 3 days and read most of the partition by examples
very few of them using multiple columns for window creation
none using a timestamp for ordering
Xgc
dreamil: Ok. In that case, provide a full testcase, with create table statement, insert statements (so we can test the same data together) and the select you wish to test and the expected output you wish.
I can't really tell what you're misunderstanding from the comments.
dreamil
Xgc: ok wait, i will provide the same
Xgc
A simple example will get us all on the same page.
dreamil
Xgc: hi again
here are sql commands to create table structure and populate it;http://pastebin.com/m54563213
at the end, i have also given sql select statement i was trying

dreamil: If you posted something, re-show the URL. I didn't see it.

Xgc
Did you note the exact results you are expecting?
dreamil
no. i will paste the same
Xgc: check the same url again:http://pastebin.com/md06592
i have pasted expected results at the bottom
Xgc
dreamil: Have you really tried the statements you posted?
Ah. You forgot to terminate the create table.
dreamil
Xgc: sorry for the typos
Xgc
dreamil: The result is as I would expect. I'll look at what you were expecting now.
dreamil
All I am expecting is, as you can see, window should be created based on continuous op values
whenever op changes a new window should be created
Xgc
dreamil: You created windows based on the (fileid, opid) pairs. The output is correct. What you want is something else, that's also based on the date.
dreamil
yes, but i dont want to create a window for each timestamp
all i want is, grouping of rows, based on file id and op, in order of occurance
so all consecutive "in" should be one group, all consecutive "out"another group(window) and so on
Xgc
dreamil: You'll need to do more review. The construct you used does not do what are expecting. There are ways to do this. If you don't find an answer, I'll be around later.
dreamil
Xgc: any hint which function could be useful?
Xgc
dreamil: LEAD() and LAG() might be of help.

hi all
simple question
i'm using v$sesstat to gather CPU usage per user
but i don't know what that number means
i mean, the value in v$sesstat for the '%CPU used by this session%' registers
can that be converted into % of CPU usage? or cycles?
