RJarett
there is no GO in oracle
its not tsql
there is no sysobjects in oracle
there is no @ declarations in oracle
there is no @currdate in oracle
thats a script for ms sql server in tsql
KWhat_Mobile
well that explains why it doesnt work ;)
can you do print <variable>; in oracle
RJarett
no
what ever you may have learned about tsql or databases from sqlserver, forget it
you may have as well learned on mysql
its not going to work in a real db
KWhat_Mobile
i need to use the to_char to get things like the day of week of the year right

hi, i did shutdown immediate; but got sql hanging, what do i do as shutdown is not complete yet and i cant wait sql to finish?
TheBonsai
is the sql a writing operation? update, insert, ...?

Reign1
select
i aborted shutdown immediate and now sql is rollbacking, so i cant kill the session as its already marked for killing
and i dunno how long will it take to wait for it to rollback
so how do i solve this?
TheBonsai
it can't roll back because it's just a select (that's why i asked)
kill the database, try a ''shutdown abort'' if you can still connect
Reign1
killed pmon, then started it up killed session and shutdown
TheBonsai
killed session after startup of the instance? the session wasn't there anymore i'd say. the session terminates together with the instance
Reign1
TheBonsai: yep, i meant that, as it was marked for killing
SP2-1540: Oracle Database cannot startup in an Edition session. <--- what the? got this after upgrade from 11.1 to 11.2 and trying to startup
nevermind fixed it
babo1
i've installed oracle on linux. how do i start it up exactly ?
LFC_fan|inactive
Which distro?
babo1
ubuntu
babo@eire:~/Desktop/database$ sqlplus /nolog
bash: sqlplus: command not found
LFC_fan|inactive
do /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
as root
also
you need to edit .bashrc file
wait for a sec
babo1
LFC_fan|inactive, i'm using enterprise, not xe
LFC_fan|inactive
Oh OK
no idea then :P
sytse
set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID correctly, and add $ORACLE_HOME/bin to PATH?
babo1
sytse :i've added it to /etc/profile but it doesn't appear on my path in terminal
sytse
then your .bashrc or whatever apparently ignores the previously set path and sets it to a new value?
babo1
sytse; i comes up empty
sytse
try grep PATH .* in your homedir or something like that
babo1
what's the password for sysdba ?
i never entered a password on install, now it's asking me for a password ...
anyone ?
LFC_fan
Well
you have to run the coniguration script
I am sure it wont be too different from XE's
something /etc/init.d/oracle or something
try typing zat and press tab maybe will work
babo1
no such file or directory
LFC_fan
hmm
ls /etc/init.d/ora*

babo1
LFC_fan: babo@eire:~/Desktop/database$ /etc/init.d/oracledb
Oracle startup: cannot start
that's the only file
LFC_fan
hmm
maybe there is a step here which you missed http://www.pythian.com/news/2329/installing-oracle-11gr1-on-ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope/
sytse
hmmm.. that wasn't the most clueful person to task with installing oracle 11g I suppose :D
