RJarett
why cant you mass deply new tnsnames.ora?
boingolov
RJarett, a lot of our java apps don't reference tnsnames.ora
RJarett
why are you changing SID/service names of the new DB?
boingolov
RJarett, we're not, we're migrating schemas to an existing db
RJarett
did people hardcode the thin connect info?
boingolov
RJarett, bingo
RJarett
are they now fired?
boingolov
RJarett, it's in source code, it's just in a connection pool. and as far as fired, it's another group that has nothing to do with us, other than they are very important and we have to make our db's talk to their apps
it isn't in source rather
it's a config file that can be changed. but apps using jdbc often don't use a tnsnames.ora file
RJarett
if they didnt use config files or something to pull in db connect info they should be fired
i know how thin works
itll be alot easier to change configs or tnsnames vs trying to proxy connections like you want

boingolov
RJarett, anyway, I'm not here to debate with you about the right way to do naming
RJarett
the SID in the string instructs the listener about how to hand off the connection
boingolov
RJarett, and I know how the listener generally works
but I'm trying to bend over backwards to keep the peace
and if that isn't possible, then so be it
RJarett
its not possible
boingolov
not even with gateways?
RJarett
everything has been created to handle it a different way. Even TAF (transparent app failover) is setup in a way to preconfiger the secondary system
boingolov
the other db server is going away. I suppose another option would be to configure a second instance, but I really don't want to do that
RJarett
or change the config file
boingolov
change what config file?
RJarett
the one the java apps pull the connect info from
boingolov
oh, right
RJarett
like i said, if peopel hardcoded db connect info into source, i would find a way to get them fired before i spent time on finding a workaround for what they did.
boingolov
well, that's certainly not out of the question, but definitely want to make sure I don't have an easy option
RJarett
you have no easy option if the SID is different
alan_andrade
hello
I need for school make a distributed env. with 3 databases. Where do I begin?
I use Rails.
Oracle can manage the 3 databases in the same computer in a way that I can connect with Rails just to one database, and oracle retrieves the info from the others?
RJarett
Rails? wtf are you talking about?
alan_andrade
RJarett, Rails is an Agile Web Development Framework
RJarett
yeah a crappy fanboy language
whats that have to do with oracle or mulitple databases?
why do you need 3 databases anyway?
its not MySql
alan_andrade
Rails is not important right now. The thing is that I have questions about multiple databases
RJarett
you dont need a DB for each small task

alan_andrade
RJarett, because is for school
RJarett
#1 i dont give 2 sh*ts about your homework
#2 oracle isnt mysql and instances arent anything like mysql
do you keep saying 3 databases just because you need 3 unique places to store different data stuff?
alan_andrade
RJarett, Well. I know you don't give a sh*t about my hw. But I guess you may guide me to some good info to do it.
RJarett, If you could help, I would be grateful. If you cant. Is ok!
RJarett
why dont you bother answering what i asked
alan_andrade
The example is a Bank. That has different locations.
North, south, Center
RJarett
And?
Why would each bank need its own instance?
alan_andrade
So, the main point to make use of ORACLE is to see how the data is retrieved from the 3 databases with a single select * from where
RJarett, About the why... I have no idea.
RJarett
use a dblink
alan_andrade
Is that an special future of ORACLE?
RJarett
thats a feature thats been around for a good 15 years
alan_andrade
I will google it.
I'm still thinking about the why each bank needs its own instance
That would be a good question for my teacher
RJarett
he will say something stupid which will require a foot up his ass... sort of like.. well what if the internet connection goes down
alan_andrade
YES
Something about that said last clas
s
!!1
RJarett
but compared to licensing additional DB servers and support, internet redundancy is better
and then you have centralized management and support
alan_andrade
:O
RJarett
because if you have 3 DBs and then you need to use dblinks between them
you still are screwed if your link goes down
so then you have to deal with replication or oracle streams for bidirectional syncing
and in that case you wouldnt use a dblink to query over, since to the apps they see each as individual units
and this is why your teacher is a stupid idiot who need a foot up his ass
his example sucks
alan_andrade
Well, to be honest, I think the same about her. We have been using ORACLE for.... no time! We have just installed it. And she is asking for this project that at first seems kind of impossible for my grade
I'm in 6th semester of Computer Engineer
RJarett
wow you fail at finding solutions for being a few years in
a intro to oracle website would have told you how
If you want to be in the computer industry, you seriously need to learn how to find basic answers yourself
alan_andrade
You make me clear about you don't like the multiple DBs. But, What would you think is a good example or real example for make use of multiple DBs
RJarett
A RAC instance
Or when you need logical separation
Or a prod/stage/dev setup
Or when you only need a tiny subset (datamart) off a large data warehouse
alan_andrade
Sounds as a heavier WHY
RJarett
why what
alan_andrade
WHY to choose a multiple DB env.
RJarett
because some systems just cant handle it as one giant one
or you want some physical separation due to legal requirements
alan_andrade
My laptop is almost melting with ORACLE running!
Thank you for your time man.
RJarett
use oracle XE if your requirements arent too high
alan_andrade
RJarett, You sound to have a lot of expertise
RJarett
yeah
alan_andrade
RJarett, Where you from
What you do
Just if you can answer... I mean, I don't want to bother you
RJarett
PA.
Run a datacenter and all the systems/dbs for a company
alan_andrade
My respect
RJarett, I really appresiate your time. Thank you very very much
Gotta go. The Library is about to close
Thank again.

Hello. While trying to import a dump created by the EXP utility, I am retrieving error 922. This error has been observed to only happen when the "NOCOMPRESS" keyword is present within the queries.
Is there any way I could remove "NOCOMPRESS" from all of the queries within the dump file ?
Or maybe is there another way to fix this such as installing a compression module?
vmnew
Oracle's data is on dbf files which comprises a tablespace, right? schemas and tables are placed physically on those tablespaces. When talking about table size, if its in bytes it means the hdd size that that table takes of its tablespace? and if its in number (ie, 9000), it means the number of rows in the table?
in Oracle 7, max extents can go as high as 512. What can I do if I reach that on a certain table?
hali
don't use oracle 7?
vmnew
right, it's in planning. For now?
hali
quit your job and work for a company that doesn't use 7? :)
vmnew
actualy, thats in planning too :P
but for now? as I am still loyal
there's supposed to be a quick fix for it but I forgot it..
mns-kesem
Hello. How can I edit database options in Oracle 9i? To be more specific, I need to enable Compress option.
mator
what is 'compress' option?
mns-kesem
There are database options, as it seems by this report.
A few examples would be: Spatial, Parallel load, Java, Application Role etc...
My database misses Compress in that list.
hali
compression is not an option in that sense
it's in there if you install EE
and you enabled it on a per table basis
mator
hali, and tablespace also?
mns-kesem
I did install EE, though as it seems I do not have the ability to enable it per-table.
hali
mns-kesem: it's a 10g and up option
mns-kesem
I have another 9i database that has it.
For example if I add "COMPRESS" at the end of a CREATE TABLE query, I get error 922, specifying that there is no such option.
hali
mns-kesem: when issuing what command?
mns-kesem
CREATE TABLE "TEST" ("COL1" NUMBER NOT NULL, "COL2" NUMBER NOT NULL) COMPRESS
^ for example
hali
and what version of 9i?
mns-kesem
Hold on.
hali
9ir1?
i thought it was 10g, but may have been introduced in 9ir2
mns-kesem
9.0.1.0.0
hali
and the working version?
9.0.1.0.0 is pretty old
mns-kesem
Actually this might be the problem
We used different CDs for each install..
hali
and 9ir1 used to be quite buggy as well
you should try to get up to 9.2.0.8
if you *have* to stay on 9i

I've got a slow ASM instance here. It has 8 disks in normal redundancy, seperated in two failgroups with four disks each. With dd on os level I get 80MB/s per disk, if I start one dd per disk with if=/dev/zero and bs=100M.
If I create a tablespace, each disk writes with less than 20MB/s
mns-kesem
I see
Anyhow, if I do not use COMPRESS, this will be seemlessly for any software using the database?
usn_work
What can be the reason?
idletask
Hello
I've had a training course on dbvault in the last two days and boy was it useful...
In 10 minutes' time I was told about the fundamentals of the way realms operate
I understood more in these 10 minutes than days of reading through the official documentation
Tells something about the quality of the documentation :/
usn_work
:)
idletask
In fact (and nevermind if I talk in the void), what dbvault realms really do is prevent the use of _system privileges_ on the objects it handles
In addition, it also prevents the use of DDLs and grants on said objects
It does not prevent, however, _object level_ privileges
LFC_fan
OK what steps I have to prepare for setting up Oracle Developer Suite 10g in Debian. I didnt find a tutorial by searching :/
usn_work
OK, Debian isn't supported. Thats why. OK
LFC_fan
Not possible to set it up?
usn_work
maybe
did you try?
What error did you see?
maybe someone tried it with *buntu
and left a howto in the net
LFC_fan
I am currently downloading it
Using this time to find a tutorial/howoto

in Oracle 7, max extents can go as high as 512. What can I do if I reach that on a certain table? besides recreating the table?

hello. anyone know about sqlldr on a mac? seems to not exist, but certainly it has to. not like no one has never used oracle on a mac...
RJarett
dont touch a mac to anything oracle
use a linux vm or windows vm
macs were never designed to run real software
just Warcraft and adobe apps

Greetings Gentlemen
that's a better entrance
on a new customer running 11g , i found this query http://pastie.org/818756 is strangely taking hours. I remember we had a slowdown problem too with this query on 10g that was solved with an "alter session _btree_bitmap_plans=false" before running that query, but iirc on 11G btree_bitmap_plans is set to false by default (i set it to false, and nothing change though). So would you have an idea why this query that looks "simple" have such a slowdown impact ?
idletask
Hello
Anyone using TDE?
boingolov
idletask, we are using it in testing environment right now
idletask
boingolov: at what level? Column encryption, table encryption or tablespace encryption?
boingolov
tablespace
idletask
In fact, we have used it successfully but I had a question
Namely, initially you have to alter system set encryption key identified by "somepassword"; -- is the encryption key itself already generated at this time?
Our client requires that it be the only one to have the encryption wallet password, and the answer to this question is important
boingolov
idletask, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking
