Hi, i'm trying to install an OracleXE on a windows 2003 server. But after installation i can't connect via sqlplus. And i noticed that the oradata files where not created.. any suggestions ?

good CET morning
a question: I am testing to resize datafiles at the moment
trouble is, sometimes there is space in lower areas of the datafile, but some objects still reside in higher block IDs, so I can't shrink beyond them
alter table move did not change this, how can I move objects down in 2lower" block ID regions?
dsdel
usn_work: you can reorganize the datafiles or exp/drop/imp
coalesce perhaps is that what you wanna do
usn_work
I tried
but shrink/coalesce has not the effect I wanted to have
exp/imp is the only thing I don#t want to do
uh, sorry, I only coalesced the indexes

dsdel
HWM? :)
lol k =)
you could also create a new tablespace and move the tables there
usn_work
tablespace coalesce only combines free extents being neighbours :(

Hi all - I've installed the Instant Client on Solaris, but can't find tnsnames.ora - where would it normally be located - or can I just create it myself and configure OIC to point to it?
ikonia
guy, I'm trying to install the Oracle 10R2 client only, the installer appears to be only offering me the option for a database, the install guides from Oracle.com I'm reading seem to only cover a DB install, normally when I've done clients before you just select the components you want, but I'm not getting that option
usn_work
ChrisMcA, $ORACLE_HOME/ADMIN/NETWORK
ikonia, you need a client install package
in 10g the client is seperatly shipped
ikonia
usn_work: again - a hero, thank you
I'll re-check the download page
just found it, it was staring me in the face, idiot
thank you
usn_work
;) np

hi .. i have a problem with the functions of the instant client which i use in php: http://pgsql.privatepaste.com/aa36aab2be is it possible that are some bugs in the oci_bind_by_name function? have some other trouble yesterday (cant use ":long" as tag)
ChrisMcA
thanks usn_work
usn_work
stede, what version are you using?
ChrisMcA, np
stede, because Oracle changed some OCI functions some time in the past
stede
usn_work: from the instantclient? 10.2
ChrisMcA
is it normal to not have an $ORACLE_HOME dir set? This is a customised package of the OIC that a colleague installed and there doesn't appear to be an $ORACLE_HOME set. I have sqlplus binary + other libraries in /usr/local/oracle/instant_client_10_2/. Should this be my $ORACLE_HOME ?
stede
usn_work: and i just learned that i can only replace values! in a query with oci_bin_by_name and not other statement parts
usn_work
the client does not need the oracle home set, but it's usually the install directory, yes
stede
usn_work: but anyway .. ":long" as tag don't work yesterday
usn_work
stede, simply don't know :(
ChrisMcA
usn_work, last question (hopefully!) - if I have an OIC installed but no tnsnames.ora or sqlnet.ora - can I just grab the .ora files from the server and drop them in $ORACLE_HOME/NETWORK/ADMIN - and will sqlplus then pick these up when I run?
usn_work
yes
if the IPs are right, and if the server you need is in its own tnsnames.ora
ChrisMcA
neato
usn_work
anyway, instant client is nasty ;)

ChrisMcA
cheers
yeah, it's a pain, but I'm using another program which uses it, so.. no choice :)
usn_work
you have a choice
install one of the other client flavours, up to the admin client
they're compatible
ChrisMcA
ah ok, might look into that
wooooooo
got it working
had to export TNS_ADMIN variable too
ntmartin
Hi, quick question, is it possible to denote sizes in megabytes/gigabytes in the init.ora file for 10gR2? I've always used bytes before but that is a bit of a pain to read sometimes.
usn_work
ntmartin, usually: yes. You can easily try: Set your parameter with alter system this way. If alter system accepts it, the init does as well
ntmartin
usn_work: Cheers

Hey guyz. We have oracle server - and accidently one of emploeyees kicked router - so the connection was lost. Than info showed that oracle stopped to work
after we fixed the connection it started to work again
is it normal ?

hali
stede: not commited?
stede
hali: donÄt matter, i think something wrong on my apache ;-) just crashes completly

I'm looking some lectures on oracle DB, and some query contains this function: SYSTEM.GENERATE_MD5('admin','admin'). I tried to execute this query on my local Oracle XE (10.2) and it doesn't recognize this function. Is this function builtin in some Oracle release??
Or it's some custom fn

okay i just solved out the problem but i don't know what caused it !!
i had a (!) on the reference (Oracle.DataAccess) i removed it and added it again and it's working
i think it came from the fact that it was generated in another machine !! (noob) :|

I know a bit, how the ITL in a block works. One next question arises: How are ITL entries blanked out again? Are they blanked at all?
