Ceendat
Hi all
if I had a 24 core machine, 128 gigs of ram, what would os would I install to run oracle?
windows? linux?
I have a liscense for data center edition
I can make it work on windows
bonsai
are you alive?
Dormir
I would stay away from Windows
but that's a personal thing
Ceendat
what about open suse?
Dormir
to me, Linux is Linux
I'm sure there are differences between them, but as long as it's an Oracle supported distro, I think it's good for production
for dev/personal use, any distro will do. I run my personal one on Gentoo
Ceendat
im a microsoft guy but
this machine has 24 cores, 128 gigs of ram
what can utilize all of that more?
Dormir
maybe Solaris x86?
Ceendat
i was reading that would probably be my best option

Hello. Can a BFILE point to a file in a subdirectory of an oracle defined directory?
SilSila

TomJ-
Is it possile to have a listener that will only answer for a particular SID on a particular IP address?
or do I need two listeners for that?
basically I have SID1 which I want only accessible when the DB is hit on host1, and SID2 which I want only accessible when the DB is hit on host2
dsdel
TomJ-: 2 listeners, iirc =)
TomJ-
dsdel: ok thanks
dsdel
the listener itself is the network service, which gets then the databases configured
TomJ-
Yeah I understand - but the config file supports the naming of SIDs so I thought I might be able to associate a SID with a host. but I guess all I can do is configure one listener which has only host1 + SID1 and another listener that has only host2 + sid2
can I configure two listeners in a single listener.ora?
jagadish
when we created a rman script using create scritp

when i install oracle (10g) what is difference between havignh create starter database on or off? wondering what all gets created? and what would need to be done if didnt use this paramter to Yes.
rizzo
winegoddess: it creates the sample scott/hr/emp schemas
or wait no
when you install oracle, you can install just the software without creating an instance
or you can choose to create an instance as part of the install
dsdel
winegoddess: in general the database which is created at setup time is a 'sample' database
if you use a database just for testing it is ok - but I wouldn't use that for production =)
steelnwool
hello
question about the directory paramater for the expdp command. I know how to set it, but how do i query it, to see what it is currently set to ?
Dormir
steelnwool: what are you trying to do?
that question isn't totally clear
steelnwool
i found the answer
select directory_name, directory_path from dba_directories

is hugepages use deprecated when memory_target (shmfs) is used?
rizzo
hali: you can't use them both
memory_target includes PGA
it's not "deprecated", it's just not available
we set memory_target=0 on our linux instances
hali
i can't say i trust memory_target yet
installing the first 11gr2 prod cluster
rizzo
make sure you do it for ASM instances as well
hali
not using asm
but thanks for the reminder
rizzo

Dormir

Hello there! I am using Oracle SQL Developer to export a database to an SQL file using one connection. I would like to import the exported file to another connection (Database). I see the export menu option but there is no import option. What am I missing? Thx
winegoddess
Dormir Question - i dont get it. you cant use . when its an escaped character?
Dormir
not sure, haven't used regular expressions much.

anyone ever had a killed process stil consume 90+% of the CPU? tried killing and disconnecting it...and it just keeps ticking
rizzo
eric256: kill the spid?
eric256
i was worried about trying that...just kill the os process right?
rizzo
the os process of your session
not just any os process
eric256
lol yea got that part
rizzo
is the entry still in v$session?
join with v$process to get the spid
assuming this is on a *nix os
eric256
alright looks like its gone after doing that
yes i did a kill -s 9 psid
spid, whichever, lol the os process, did a ps -aef and found it first...now to see what happens
thanks that did the trick
apparently it had been running for 60 days and eating up one entire cpu that entire time

how did you like oracle when you were just starting Dormir
Dormir
I started out at Oracle in one of their training programs. tons of info to learn in a very short time
6 months to give a presentation about Oracle based on a topic chosen randomly from a list of 20 as you walked to the podium
in front of a room of people who were Oracle experts
and could ask you anythign they wanted on your topic
zasz
nice
this job just landed in my lap and i have 3 other dbas to help me learn
