so oracle db seems pretty neat. But it seems the people at my employer doesn't quite get database design =\
this cmdb has like 40 tables, and 12 of them duplicate the same information + one more thing
it's a great way to learn sql heh
SilSila
is it necessary to provide the licence details to metalink while buying support?

I'm reading User's guide for Oracle VM server .. I can't seem to find the location of /extra_kernels - I'd like to convert a full-virtualized guest to be paravirtualized. Does someone know this location?
It's supposed to be on OracleVM Server cd, but there's nothing like it there.. no kernels for xen guests at all
is there some other channel for OracleVM ?

hi, how can I add some ms to my variable of type TIMESTAMP ?
idletask
Hello
Does anyone use TDE here?
A client requires that we use it at the tablespace level and we need to open the wallet at db startup time and close it at shutdown time without knowing the password... My question is, do you have to be sysdba to open/close a wallet?
Or are there any privileges that can be granted to a specific user so that this user can manipulate the wallet but not have sysdba privileges?
tombee
hello, just wondering if there any methods of controlling a database deployment via SQL scripts.
Usually have a list of all the scripts in a file prefixed with @, but need it to halt if there's a problem.
noticed there's the WHENEVER SQLERROR, but it still might be a bit primitive, is there a method of doing more conditional operations upon failure?
mamurdian
can someone tell me what catalog in oracle is?
idletask
Hello again
Is there a way to grant a user the permission to open an encryption wallet via "alter system set encryption wallet open/close" _without_ granting sysdba to said user?

RuslanPopov
make pl/sql package for it and grant execute?
idletask
Err
Won't oracle check underlying permissions?
(and tbh I don't know pl/sql at all)
monteiro
hi all, is anyone going to assist oracle's webcast?
idletask
Not me
monteiro
but you know when it's starting
because i'm in a different country and the hour is different
and on the oracle website it appears a strange hour...
idletask
URL?

idletask: by default pl/sql procedure works with rights of owner & it will have access to the wallet. You also can make procedures that works with access of 'user who calls it' : http://alloracletech.blogspot.com/2008/07/authid-definer-vs-authid-currentuser.html
idletask
Michael_Knight: will read and try to understand
Michael_Knight
idletask: it is easy. By default pl/sql procedure has rights of owner. If you compile it (some_procedure) as user1 & you call it as user2 (who has execute right to some_procedure) procedure has the same rights as user1. It can use tables of user1 even user2 has no access to them.
mamurdian
can someone tell me what a database instance is in oracle?
mator
mamurdian, http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_an_oracle_instance
mamurdian, http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28301/intro002.htm#BHCCGABJ
mamurdian
ups
the 2nd is good
i searched for catalog and i found nothing useful.
mator> tnx
is it possible to have several schemas per db instance?
mator
yes
mamurdian
probably
k
mator
read more about what schema is
mamurdian
i know that a schema and user is similar in oracle
mator
and the oracle is multiuser db, so there's many schema's in oracle
ikonia
any of you chaps using Oracle DB (10/11) on HPUX 11.31 on intergrity, I've used it in unsupported integrity VM's which had massive memory problems, however I'd love to hear experienced dba's/users views of Oracle on the HP Itanium platform pros/cons
mamurdian
k and an oracle dbms can have many db instances right?
my script is bs.
idletask
Michael_Knight: interesting!
Dormir
an oracle database has 1 or more instances
you should read the concepts manual
mamurdian
k
i will do
Dormir
it outlines everything you've asked
mamurdian
k
sorry
Dormir
no need to be sorry
just letting you know
mamurdian
i learn from my script and sometimes it is hard to understand
fully qualified should be something like this: catalog.schema.object
but i can't find something like a catalog
maybe it is only in SQL92 standard
Dormir
probably so
if you look in the docs, it'll have the Oracle way
docs.oracle.com
mamurdian
can i see the name of the instance i currently working on?
rizzo
select instance_name from v$instance;
mamurdian: ^^^
mamurdian
or here: http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/database-solutions/whats-in-a-name-naming-and-idenifying-oracle-databases-and-instances-7178
guys, tnx. i don't want to drive you crazy with my beginner questions.
rizzo
mamurdian: beginner questions are all we can handle
just try to find the answer yourself first
mamurdian
does not work, he says table or view does exists
but select * from v$version works
rizzo
what version
mamurdian
select * from v$instance;
i used this
wait
rizzo
what version of oracle are you on
v$instance should always be there
mamurdian
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bi
rizzo
unless your user doesn't have permission to query it
mamurdian
but then i would except something like this: permisssion denied
:)
rizzo
not necessarily
mamurdian
expect
hmm
rizzo
I assume you are not sysdba or a user with dba role
or select_catalog_role
mamurdian
i use an account with SQL Developer, the db resides in the school.
nono
i'm an unprivileged user
rizzo
I think you at least need the select_catalog_role to query the data dictionary
mamurdian
is it normally possible to do something like this:
select * from dba_users; ?
rizzo
dba_% views require dba priv
iirc
mamurdian
in my script stand it is possible but he says tab or view does not exists
i only can do all_users; and user_users;
rizzo
yaeh you won't see it if you don't have dba priv
mamurdian
yup
now it makey sense
s/y/s/
rizzo> tnx
rizzo
no prob
giusef
can anyone help me on make an attribute searchable in OID

Hello, anyone know how to change the default DemoTrust.jks keystore that gets loaded before the security realm please?
Thanks.
This is concerning WeLogic 10.3

hi guys. is there a way to declare and use a cursor inside a stored procedure to perform a mass update?
Xgc
yi3: As you approach the speed of light, the time required goes to infinity.
yi3: You can't use a single update statement?
yi3
xgc: well I suppose I could but the update statement needs to have 4 joins and I'm not sure how to do that either
zasz
if you have mass in theory it would become infinit when you reach the speed of light
yi3
I don't really like the idea of my body approaching the speed of light just so I can have more time to work on this problem
Xgc
Also, the problem becomes rather large.
yi3
argh! I figured out it... I was using 'FOR rec IN dr_cur' and then referencing dr_cur directly in the for loop rather than using 'rec'
dumb mistake... at least it compiles now
rizzo
anyone here have any suggestions for doing Oracle authentication without a password, besides Wallet?
Wallet worked great, just want to make sure I've evaluated everything else worthwhile
this would be for a perl app using DBD::Oracle on a diff machine than the server
Trengo
rizzo i dont know myself, but why no password?
rizzo
the auth requires a password
we just don't want to have to have a password coded in a text file
secure external password store is a great solution
but doesn't work with just instantclient
Trengo
protect the text file
rizzo
yes I'm aware you can change perms
the task is to find a solution that doesn't require coding the password
Trengo
i cant think of any, over the network only
TheBonsai
