hi, i am wondering what the use of the grouping function is. Isn't the use of nvl easier than interpreting the 1 or 0 with case first?
example: select case grouping(division_id) when 1 then 'All divisions' else division_id
end as div, nvl(division_id,'All divisions'), sum (salary) from employees2 group by rollup(division_id);
ah, i found a solution myself: http://www.remote-dba.net/pl_sql/t_sql_grouping.htm
grouping is able to distinguish between nulls that were inserted by the rollup/cube and stored nulls

invalid entry size (expected 2127341 but got 2127370 bytes)
Spec
hrmm.
One of these (init) parameters makes EM not able to authenticate SYSDBA accounts, but I'm not sure which: remote_os_authent(FALSE, which is also default), remote_os_roles(FALSE, which is also default), or remote_listener="" (but EM should use the local listener...)
so all those are defaults...but when I manually define them in the init.ora (really, the spfile), EM can't authenticate sysdba users no more
and in fact...the settings I removed from the init file....if I use "show parameter", it confirms the defaults are what I set 'em too...
how does oracle work :(

The good news is that Oracle is highly configurable. THe bad news is that Oracle is Highly configurable.
zasz
lol
Dormir
Spec, you're trying to log in to a remote database with sysdba privs?
Spec
Dormir: no...local db with sysdba privs via WEM (oracle enterprise manager)
Dormir
the db and EM are on the same box?
Spec
yeap
no rac/grid/crazy

Dormir
so sqlplus sys@db as sysdba works?
Spec
sqlplus / as sysdba works
Dormir
not what I asked
Spec
Dormir: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
zasz
lol
Spec
yeah, i know why taht is
Dormir
what's remote_login_passwordfile set to?
and do you have a password file?
you're using dbconsole?
Spec
yes
_password file is set to EXCLUSIVE
and yes, i has password file
TheBonsai
i has password, nom nom :)
corpunk
:)
Spec
Dormir: i can connect via: sqlplus SYS@"<global name>:<port>/<instance>" as sysdba
i'm glad oracle is consistent....re-added those values to the init file(spfile), and now i can authenticate as sysdba via EM
zasz
are you all fixed up then
Spec
doing the same thing multiple times and expecting results = insanity...what's this then?
Dormir
added what values?
Spec
well, it seems it ;)
Dormir: the ones i added originally which "broke" it
zasz
only the insane administer Oracle
Spec
Spec>>> One of these (init) parameters makes EM not able to authenticate SYSDBA accounts, but I'm not sure which: remote_os_authent(FALSE, which is also default), remote_os_roles(FALSE, which is also default), or remote_listener="" (but EM should use the local listener...)
I added those, EM wouldn't let me authenticate as sysdba, removed them, collected you guys information, re-added them, and magic, it's all working.
zasz
why are you screwing with them if you're not sure
Spec
zasz: there's only one good word to answer that one
zasz: policy
(although, I'm defining their default values...so my changes really shouldn't have changed anything, whatsoever.)
Dormir
did you bounce Oracle at any time

Spec
after making the changes, yes
Dormir
just the last time you made changes, or each time?
Spec
Dormir: each time
also bounced the listener
Dormir
hard to say then. don't have an issue here. I would think if you couldn't connect remotely as sysdba, you wouldn't be able to connect through EM as sysdba
but I haven't tried, so I'm not sure
Spec
remote_os* only affectes the remote-os authentication mechanisms, not remotely authenticating users
(as in, don't rely on a windows client to authenticate itself for database access, because that's dumb.)
zasz
spec did you read through your alert logs
Spec
zasz: yeah, nothing
and nothing in emoms.log either
(if that was the right place to look)
zasz
don't bring her into this
Spec
zasz: sorry :( so attractive.
zasz
lol
well i'm glad I helped
i'm logging off your db now
Spec
why's it full of horse pictures now :(
zasz
Dormir has to keep himself entertained somehow
Dormir
don't pull me into your deluded fantasies
zasz
sorry about that, sleepy
