are there specific, technical/logical reasons why empty strings are treated as null, and if so, what are they?

Hi folks,
has anyone here experience with Oracle on Microsoft Hyper-V? Would you recommend to do it? If not, why?
Hi again - netsplits are neat. Has anyone here experience with Oracle on Microsoft Hyper-V? Would you recommend to do it? If not, why?

hi rude
Rudemeister
no experience, @MS/hyperV
usn_work
lucky you :)

i'm using oracle 9i on windows. When I type startup it gives an error 'memory not enough'
Rudemeister
qweeddd: so?

qweeddd
is there any thing i can do to avoid the error
dsdel
hmmm perhaps the memory is not enough!
Rudemeister

RaDz
cmd: host add memory [enter]
usn_work
qweeddd, please copy and paste the error
Rudemeister
why does bpel run on one node?
mamurdian
alter table test_constraints add constraint (CONSTRAINT FK_tempo_id FOREIGN KEY test_constraints(id) REFERENCES tempo(id));
what is wrong here?
it says invalid datatype
usn_work
why not:
alter table test_constraints add constraint FK_tempo_id foreign key (...); ?
RaDz
I have a strange behaviour of command. There are 10xe and 11enterprise, the same set of SQL scripts. If I run these scripts on 11g, all is ok. If I use 10xe, it fails
usn_work
mamurdian, http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/clauses002.htm#CJADJGEC
RaDz
http://dpaste.com/145502/ - first command is for 11g, the second is for 10xe
usn_work
"these are people using random syntax and complian" ;)
RaDz, retry with dropping & recreating the table first in both cases
mamurdian
usn_work> i will try.
RaDz
I did it already, these examples I've got after recreating both schemes
mamurdian
usn_work> tnx
RaDz
I understand that something goes wrong ,but this error is reproduced on 10xe only
usn_work
if you can provide a runable script, I can try to reproduce it
just one table: drop, create, add constraint
RaDz
do you have both db?
usn_work
yes
RaDz
ok, give me a time

usn_work
all you need
RaDz
http://dpaste.com/145509/
I make double of last string to test, if 11g allow apply pk more than one times
usn_work
RaDz, I get the error ibn both worlds
and I can't say that I am surprised
RaDz
may be the error happens because of I did the following: 1) I disable all constraints P,C,R, then I change VARCHAR2 fields to RAW, then I manually set the constraints back
on 10xe the my constraint disable code may work wrong
usn_work
if the constraint EXISTS, it can't be recreated
RaDz
I understand that
can you take a look on my constraint disable code?
usn_work
if you paste it
RaDz
http://dpaste.com/145512/
usn_work
select * from user_constraints where table_name='DEPARTMENT';
RaDz, not sure, but I think I've read that you have to specify %rowtype instead of %type now
RaDz
why?
usn_work
can you check "select * from user_constraints where table_name='DEPARTMENT';" on both of the DBs before executing the alter table add constraint?
RaDz
let me insert an SQL
usn_work
got to go, lunchtime. Will be back in one hour
RaDz
ok
it was magic bug!
ruxpin
I need to read the entire contents of an oracle database on a production server to static fixtures for testing
RaDz
alter system set nls_length_semantics=char scope=spfile;
that was the reason of error, so no constraint were dropped and naturally I can't create new PK
ruxpin
that for I need to first reach the database schema, and go table by table copying their content into fixture format
advice?
RaDz
write your own script on python to export the data into fixture format
ruxpin
I can create the script but I don't know the SQL needed..
I have done this on postgres databases
never on oracle and from my experience every database has their own way to query schema,
so I don't know if this is even possible on oracle
RaDz
desc user_tables, user_tab_columns and so on
ruxpin
ok
I'll google that
http://www.eveandersson.com/writing/data-model-reverse-engineering
ok, got it
thx :)
usn_work
RaDz, hehe ;)
RaDz
yep
pcb-dennis
Hi, i want to upgrade a database from 10g (10.2.0.4) to 11g, is it better to export the 10g and then do a new install or is it better to do a upgrade with DBUA? And is it about the same as installing a patchset?
ecl
hi, Any idea about oracle10g is skipping the sequences are shutdown?
hubidubi
hi
ecl
err, i mean..
Any idea about oracle10g is skipping the sequences *without* shutdown?
it isn't RAC.
hubidubi
I would like to ask some help, I got an ORA-01578 data corruption error in 10g
I try to correct it with dbms_repair
I made repair table and I run checking
I have got 25 currupted items
I also run FIX_CORRUPT_BLOCKS but it didn't fix anything
do you have any idea?
padhu
what is the query to sum the range of entries, for example salary for the period during mar-2009 to feb-2010
TheBonsai
select sum (salary) where date > to_date (........) and date < to_date (........) from bla;
hali
rizzo: seen 11gr2 in production yet?
rizzo
hali: avaia runs it
hali
im just about to kick some SE One instances in vmware lvie
TheBonsai
hali: fine... no ORA-xxxx i can't explain anymore ;) (jumped directly from 10g2)
hali
just thinking if there is anything to keep in mind
this system was on 9iR2 13 months ago, did a 10gr2 upgrade 12 months ago and now they are going 11gr2
TheBonsai
you mean beside default password case sensitivity? ;)
hali
mine aren't :P
dsdel
keep in mind that you need a ticket to somewhere if it doesn't work :)
mamurdian
is no action in oracle similar to restrict?
e.g. ON DELETE NO ACTION
TheBonsai
maybe with a trigger, but... why?
mamurdian
was this answer related to my question?
TheBonsai
gah, i just misread it
mamurdian
np
TheBonsai
i interpreted it like "is there no action in oracle that is similar to restrict?"
mamurdian
k
usn_work
I simply don't understand it, mamurdian
mamurdian
where is the difference between ON DELETE NO ACTION and ON DELETE RESTRICT?

is it possible to create a constraint outside of an table?
shadash
I'm trying to log into a db remotely and getting "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges password file" 11g database is in "startup nomount" and I can log into it with "sqlplus sys as sysdba"
This has to be some 11g security thing
I've got a password file
padhu
shadash: In Linux?
shadash
yes
I'm trying to duplicate a database
padhu
shadash: sqlplus
then
username: /as sysdba
sqlplus command in oracle user
that's all
shadash

see what you think

any ideas?
Rudemeister
re
spcshpopr8r
hi all, is it possible to create a trigger limited to a specific partition of a table
really, what I'm trying to do is figure out a way I can be notified if records are manipulated in (date) range partitions of prior years...I'd appreciate any ideas
RJarett
why a trigger?
use fine grained auditing
spcshpopr8r
RJarett: trigger's just what immediately came to mind...hadn't gotten to considering auditing, thanks for the pointer; if you have a good reference for how to do what I'm trying to do that would be great.
RJarett
http://tinyurl.com/ya46ee5
theres so main samples on fine grain auditing its crazy
Rudemeister
main?

many
alot of conversations going

RJ was here, eh?
zasz
yes
are you two tight Oracle buds?
Dormir
not sure how tight, but buds, yeah
zasz
very toight yes
not like sleeve of wizard
Dormir
don't know what that is...don't think I want to know :)
zasz
i suddenly feel like watching borat again
mfilipe
how do I do to execute a .sql in command line (linux)?
Discordian
sqlplus user/pass @sqlfilename
mfilipe
hum... ok
thanks
Discordian
You can put that in a script if you need to
but you will need to call sqlplus
mfilipe
I think that sqlplus will complain about the big line
I have a line with 3000+ characters
Discordian
the shell doesn't under SQL
understand
mfilipe
I know
sqlplus has that limitation with big lines
zasz
Discordian: you don't need to specify the service name?
Discordian
I assume that's setup in the environment that mfilipe is using
zasz
gotcha
Dormir beats me when I make assumptions :(
Discordian
I answered a very simple question
people pay good money for that kind of thing I'm told, zasz
