*droole* :)
Hootch
hi, i'm looking for beginner books (for dummies or something else) any ideas?=
zasz
hootch
Are you looking to learn 11g?
Hootch
sorry, i didnt saw the topic .. i looking for 10xe docs
today is my first day to start with XE :)
oracle 10g XE - but i think the documentation for 10g (xe or not) should be the same, or?
zasz
there is a documentation site for xe
why don't you start there?
what is your goal
Hootch
i've the starting guide and the installation runs fine also the sqldeveloper. my goal should to get reference documentation for further usage of the database. Basic knowledge about Triggers, Sequence, Views ... the basic stuff
zasz
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19188_01/doc/B15920/toc.htm
Hootch
I'm come up from mysql and would to decide a change to bigger database. Next lesson will be to learn PL/SQL i think
zasz
you know you can just get the full database right
if you want to move to a "bigger" database and learn what it can do
i would suggest you download 10g or 11g and read the concepts book
which illustrates what the rdms can do
and how it works

Hootch
Could i use 10g oder 11g full version for education study?
zasz
yes
i would start with 10 because it's the most pervasive version
read the manuals, concepts, administration, backup and recovery, performance tuning, developers guide, utilities
this way when you learn 11g you'll understand why they added the features they did
Hootch
oh men, i'm just a normal java developer ;)
zasz
or you can dive right into 11g if you want'
nobody is perfect
Hootch
no i think to understand 10g is enough for now. I know the basic of oracle as user / developer but as admin or pl/sql developer.
i want to see/learn the benefit of oracle
Thx for help ;) i start with the 10g docs
zasz
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/homepage
Hootch
and look futher
zasz
i would read the manuals in the following order
concepts, administration, backup/recovery, performance tuning, application development, utilities
setup virtual machines if you can to test things out
that will give you some well rounded knowledge of oracle
stay away from that 2 day crap
Hootch
ok and you explain my wife ... why i'm cannot leave my room ;D
zasz
to be profient with Oracle demands time
If you don't have it... move on :)
bpmuckian
is it possible to "create index...global...partition by range...subpartition by hash"?

hi, who can help me with advice on oracle sql injection ?
pcb-dennis
Hi, i have a licensing question: if i have a license with maintenance for a 10g database, am i allowed to upgrade to 11g with that licence/maintenance?
dsdel
pcb-dennis: if you have a maintenance contract with oracle you are free to use every version/patch you can download
that's why you pay monthly maintenance fees
but to get sure, check with your sales team
pcb-dennis
dsdel: okay i will call them, atm i have several CSI's and several licenses, but i think its best to call my sales-partner
dsdel
yes :) irc and licensing is not really safe - especially if there are individual contracts
pcb-dennis
dsdel: thanks :)
dsdel

This error is raised if you try to run the application under an Oracle user who does not have access to the Headstart database objects. <-- what does that mean?
what are headstart database objects?
O-Zone
hi all
i need to execure a query that contains a subquery that return multiple rows
and i need to fetch all those :-P
mfilipe
hi all! i have a number variable in procedure and i want increment it with + 1. how do I do this? variable := variable + 1;
srm
O-Zone: fetch all those what? general SQL-questions might also go to #sql
NeosVortex
hey
need some syntax help
im trying to update an ldap query on table name ofproperty column name = name and value = propvalue can anyone give me the syntax?
when I execute this I'm getting a 00972 error
mamurdian
how can i see which constraints on table r defined?
NeosVortex
this has to be one of the worst rooms to come to for help
dsdel
mamurdian: go with desc all_constraints
select constraint_name from all_constraints where table_name = 'TABLENAME';
mamurdian
i got something: select * from user_constraints where upper(table_name) = upper('pers');
but i can't see the code of the constraint
:/
srm
code?
mamurdian
ah dsdel, tnx
something like not null
check in
contraint_type = 'P' maybe means PK
srm
column SEARCH_CONDITION doesn't help you?
mamurdian
in SQL Developer you can get the same through clicking... interessing.
srm> maybe, here it is NULL on the specified table.
srm> yup that's it, tnx

having a brain fart - in sqlplus, how to disable chained transactions? (having to explicitly commit is driving me nuts)
Dormir
chained transactions?
Rudemeister
Dormir: ?
news?
anyone: how to reset the admin password in B2B
?
Dormir
news on DP - RMAN?
we're testing today. doesn't look like we have to relink, which is good
PM me your issue again. lost it in the scroll
jason_froebe
with Sybase ASE 12.5 t you can access tables/stored procedures using a webservices front end (included with the base license) - is there a similar option in Oracle 11g? my brain is simply not working today
I'd rather not use the full Oracle app server if I can help it
Dormir
depends on what you're trying to do
dbconsole might work, or APEX
MrWax
Hello
Anybody is here that is familiar with the Oracle Academy?
mfilipe
what is wrong with it ? http://pastebin.com/d51caa471 . I get the "ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement" error
jason_froebe
thanks Dormir (I went to Starbucks so I didn't respond earlier) - basically I want to be able to just pull data from a few tables but via a webservice so I don't need to have Oracle client installed on the app side
it's just a few tables with a tiny bit of data (data is in oracle for political reasons not technical) so it doesn't justify putting a full blown app server inbetween
Dormir
isqlplus would work for that
what version of oracle?
jason_froebe
isqlplus (web) is a bit top heavy I think... 11g
Dormir
hmmm, did they include isqlplus with 11g? don't remember
APEX would be an simple download and configure with the listener, I believe
jason_froebe
it's on 10g for certain - we don't use isqlplus (web)
doesn't apex require separate licensing though?
Dormir
don't know
I thought APEX was free, but I could be wrong
