TheBonsai, informative =)
sidh
greetings gentlemen
on a windows client platform, if i "sqlplus user/passwd@sid", it's ok , but if i "set ORACLE_SID=sid" and "sqlplus user/password", then it doesn't connect to the sid that i set, and i get in error , why ?
TheBonsai
because user/pass@name is not what you think
the thing following the @ is a TNS name
sidh
yes they are the same name
if i tnsping sid, it is ok
TheBonsai
then it should do
er
no
i mean
ORACLE_SID is not related to some TNS name
that's your misunderstanding
ORACLE_SID is the local instance identifier name

not long time ago I was complaining that doing a complete refresh on a MV disorders data in the MV (because you can specify order by clause only on creation time), and the index on this MV will have a high clustering factor
but i found a solution: the NO_USE_HASH_AGGREGATION hint will sort it by group by implementation (if you have a group by in the MV)
TheBonsai
blog it
milan
i was just going to write "i should start a blog"

oracle vs sql server: go!
TheBonsai
would need some years of development on MS side i'd say
but in a while they surely can compete
razym
oracle vs mysql server: go!
:p
do you think so, bonsai?
milan
interestingly enough, it turns out the data is not entirely sorted, and you should not use this technique instead of order by clause
TheBonsai
razym: setup a RAC-like system
milan
but it's sorted just enough for my needs
razym
i think oracle is better for scalability, performance, and probably speed
but not for ease of use or cost
hmmm.
TheBonsai
so...
if you need scalability, performance, and probably speed, you take?
razym
oh nothing, just wondering what others think
TheBonsai
if you need cheap stuff, you take?
;-)
razym
engineering triangle, bonsai
TheBonsai
no, never mind
i'm not that serious
razym
lol
mattboll
hi
I've read a lot of docs but still don't understand listener well& I can connect using sqlplus GEFR/password@orcl but not from a java application using jdbc, ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor
I've got a quite simple listener http://pastebin.com/d67db3205
TheBonsai
look at the listener log what the client tries to request
mattboll
(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=ORCL)(CID=(PROGRAM=JDBC Thin Client)(HOST=__jdbc__)(USER=mattboll))) * (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=192.168.0.45)(PORT=57097)) * establish * ORCL * 12505
TNS-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor
(it writes the same when host is 127.0.0.1)
TheBonsai
lsnrctl services
mattboll
except for PORT=Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cyrnos.les-isles.org)(PORT=1521)))
Service "ORCL" has 1 instance(s).
some other stuff, I don't want to flood here but i can pastebin if you want
Newbie

Newbie
how can we configure timeout setting
pls help
mator
TheBonsai
*mumble* i just had a 10.2.0.3 RAC where both instances had the ASM pmon at 100% CPU and the database reaction times were 2-5 seconds higher as normal
sinesio
hi guys, having oracle database installed on a solaris system what do i need to get this to send snmp traps to another host
mator
"_this_" ?
echo this | snmptrap
sinesio
I want oracle database or enterprise manager do send snmp traps to another host
i don't know if i have to install some kind of subagent
but when i try to follow some tutorial I allways end up missing some files :(
mator
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/doc/em.102/b16244/chap1.htm ?
sinesio
thats what i've been reading
the same as this http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/doc/em.102/b16244.pdf
When I install oracle database with enterprise manager i don't have any sub-agent installed, right?
mator
define "missing files" ?
no idea.... check with your installation and oracle inventory
sinesio
e.g: $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/snmp/peer/CONFIG.master
http://tinypaste.com/a916a
mator
sinesio, does your oracle inventory lists something with snmp|agent or you've not installed it?
Install the latest patchset. In 10.2.0.1 the emsubagent binary was forgotten, apparently (!!!)
http://www.held.org.il/blog/?p=56
sinesio
that was one of the tutorials I was following
you are asking if i have installed oracle Inventory?
no I haven't
where do i find the latest patchset?
mator
on metalink
sinesio
looks like i don't have a support identifier
mator
i don't have either... :(

delewis
nope.
sinesio
when I check the inventory I have this:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/779/oracle.gif
it looks like I have oracle database installed in one location and oracle management agent in another one
but these two are not linked together, and i don't have a sub agent in the oracle database installation
jetsaredim
can someone explain how to do nested if statements in a trigger?
Dormir
it would be the same as a procedure or an autonomous PL/SQL block
MapsRus
How do insert a date in this format into an Oracle Date field? "2009-12-08 11:17:01 PM" I have tried this TO_DATE('2009-12-08 11:17:01 PM, YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS AM') but failed
I get this error when trying to insert my date - ORA-01861: literal does not match format string
TheBonsai
the function takes two arguments
you supply one
to_date ('...', '...')
