Can anyone help me installing oracle on debian?..
PocketKnives
anybody have experience developing an ASP.NET front end for an Oracle 10g database?
tieTYT
is there a way to drop a materialized view but not error if it doesn't already exist?

hello all
Anyone mind taking a stab at a script I've been writing and cannot get to work?
Myish
So PL newbie here needs a hand. I'm trying to create a report selection menu. I prompt the user to make a selection (1-10) based on their selection I need to gather certain information from them, like an invoice number, or a name, etc. How do I stop SQL+ from prompting for ALL the substitution variables when I just need the ones to fire for the relevant selection?...phew
Any input would be greatly appreciated, stressed to the hills here :)

Is what I'm referring to
any suggested reading maybe on where I might find a solution?
nvm figured it out, 2 scripts and a stored procedure later ;)
JohanSJA
I have tried to build a report using application builder in oracle 10g express edition, I can show a report. However, I need it to accept some input (specify date range). How to achieve this?
mastro
TheBonsai, sorry for yesterday, I was behind a crazy proxy :/
TheBonsai
m00
no prob
did you solve your 942 trouble?
mastro
TheBonsai, the dba did something and then I was able to drop those table, but they did without telling me what
TheBonsai, may it be that when I created some table they got on a tablespace different to the one I should have used and so it did not let me to drop them? (actually what went in the wrong tablespace could have been an index)

TheBonsai
no, due to the SYS object error you pasted yesterday, i guess the dictionary had a problem#
SYSTEM ts full or something
mastro
TheBonsai, so I did nothing wrong?
(i'm totally newbie to oracle)
TheBonsai
i think no

why does the $&/%$ยง&/$&%/$&%/%/& SLES oracle initscript only attempt to start the agent if [ ! -z "$ORACLE_HOME" -a ! -d "$ORACLE_HOME" ] ...?!
(EM agent that is)
pffff
(Action) hacks the script and mumbles something about ''idiots'' and ''better make a private-user linux distribution only''
mator
bonsai they do actually with oracle unbreakable linux :) no idea how it works though =)
you could probably write your own start/stop scripts, they are not that hard
TheBonsai
yea, of course. with 11g2 i need nothing more from this script anyways. i just wanted to find a way to tweak as less as possible after a system standard install

heloo any one here uses oracle sql developer

hi all, smb have a doc about datafile structure ?
hali
there is a very basic guide yes... not enough to reverse engineer the format
djeday
i have bd in noarchivelog, ( 10g xe ) , there was an error ( crc on control file ), i try to recreate it and fogot to set 1 datafile, after it i try to open this bd =(
next time when i recreate control file i'am having this error
ora-01189 file is from a different resetlogs than previous files ( ps: new control file with full list of datafile )
qnix
Hi. I've created a new database and sid with the database configuration manager.
I can connect locally to it (sqlplus). But I got ORA-12514 when I try on another computer
I tried a few things I've found on google but still get the problem. any hint?
djeday
paste list of listner.ora
lsnrctl status
lsnrctl services
put the output here on in privete msg

qnix
ok, let me 2 mins, to paste that.

can anyone tell me how to use bcp to dump a sybase database?
hali
#oracle?
bcp is sort of becoming obsolete

_sho_
hali: oracle bought out and/or runs sybase
hali
_sho_: no
they didn't :)
_sho_
you can run sybase inside of oracle though, i know that
hali
no you can't
unless oracle=oracle enterprise linux, then sort of yes
DiscordianUK
Errr what on earth is this?
_sho_
we have a sybase db running on our oracle enterprise right across the hall
hali
_sho_: uhm, no you dont
DiscordianUK
This is about the Oracle RDBMS
hali
unless above
_sho_
ja, we do. and yes, its oracle enterprise linux
DiscordianUK
not Oracle's rip off linux
hali
still not a valid topic in here
then again, there isn't really a better option so your best bet is probably in here... and people usually don't mind off-topic
_sho_
ive got a sybase db from ages ago i have to somehow get plaintext out of, and i cant get bcp syntax right :(
hali
bcp db_name.object_owner.table_name out table.txt -c -t \\t -r \\n -Uuser
usually
_sho_
ahhh.
hali
i have 'bcp rbs_dupe_issue_sn.dbo.tranche out dog.txt -c -t \\t -r \\n -Usa -P' in a script here
(note how i don't even have a sa password!!!)
and for the record, fu*k i hate sybase!
_sho_
oh wow. thanks man
but man... thats going to be insane to parse into some insert sql statements
(Action) scratches his chin.

have some issue with weblogic deployments updates: it update almost everything but the JSPs that seems to not take the update
hali
mastro: using an azul appliance?
or native jvm
we had horrible problems with azul and jsp compliation
mastro
hali, default weblogic behaviour
hali
update on the deployment or stop/delete and redeploy?
update is known to screw up
deploying from NFS is known to screw up
lots of other things are known to screw up in weblogic :-)
_sho_
hali: thanks dude
hali
_sho_: what are you importing in?
_sho_
hali: exporting
hali
but the destination
_sho_
trying to do a csv dump of a database
oh, importing into mysql
hali
ok
_sho_
i dont have the column names, so they can figure it out on their own
(Action) is irritated about all of this legacy, never-been-updated crap he has to maintain
djeday
hi all , anybody know how to erase information about previos open database with resetlog from dbfiles ?
the error is ora-01189 file is from a different resetlogs than previous files ( no backup no archivelog orcl 10 xe )
all i find out this is the information from http://www.vijaymukhi.com/oracled.doc but this is orcl 8i =(
i'm thy to clean checksum info from headers ( offset db_block_size +15 (01_04 -> 01_01 00 00) ) and recreate control file but the same error has appear

omg the new metalink drives me NUTS!!111
hali
yes
teite
i have to use the html version next time
spheniscus
lol and its not even called metalink anymore
hali
it's almost worth migrating to postgres in terms of time savings trolling through metalink
Dormir
you can't use the html version. they retired it
mastro
hali, (sorry for the delay) well.. i'll try to stop,delete/redeploy. Is there any page with a list of thinks that are know to screw up with weblogic?
spheniscus

i confirmed that a simple shared lib that calls system() works via extproc. another more complicated external function im trying to use in plsql gives "ORA-28576: lost RPC connection to external procedure agent". does the fact that system() worked mean that its not a listener.ora issue?
TomJ
Can anyone tell me about the ora_dism process? I was just reading that: "he ora_dism process must run as root in order to be able to dynamically grow/shrink ISM segments. If it is not present, DISM will work but performance will stink since each access to memory will have to go through a mutex...yuck. So make sure it is there and has SUID root permissions."
I have one DB where I do have ora_dism running as root
but another DB where it is not running at all
is this a problem?
the DB that does have it running has a total of 66GB allocated to it (out of 72GB on the box) - the other one has 28GB allocated out of 32. could that be a reason?
hmm well I can see that both DBs do have a set-uid /opt/oracle/server/10.2.0/bin/oradism process - so I guess the DB that isn't running it must have decided it doesnt need to run it?

PaulFertser
Hey everybody :) My friend is having an issue i can't explain: she starts sqlplus as sysdba user, creates a database, all that works good. Creating tables, insert/select works. What doesn't is "select * from dba_tables;" and any other common tables dba_* and all_* alike. What am i missing?
And yes, i've googled a lot already :D
boingolov
PaulFertser, sounds like the catalog wasn't created properly
you can probably just run $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catalog.sql and catproc.sql , in general it's easiest to use dbca to create the db
even if it is a stupid guit ool
gui tool even
PaulFertser
boingolov: dbca doesn't seem to allow to set utf8 as a database charset. And yes, using gui is stupid :)
boingolov: great thanks for the catalog hint, i'll try it.
boingolov
PaulFertser, you can change all of the initialization parameters
but dbca is advisable precisely to avoid problems like not reading the docs on how to create a database from the command line
PaulFertser
boingolov: not the right solution imho
boingolov
PaulFertser, and who asked you ;)
PaulFertser
boingolov: btw, is it just me or are oracle online docs (from the "library") really not that good, lack "see also", go "up" and enough cross-references? My overall oracle experience is dissatisfying. The installation procedure has plenty of assumptions and doesn't follow the well-established guidelines on where to place the executables, headers, libraries etc. And when i saw a link to an uninstall utility that is >100M large i started to seriously dou
... oracle's sanity.
boingolov
PaulFertser, oracle's documentation is many things, overwhelming in some ways, incomplete in others, downright inaccurate in some places (particularly earlier revisions of installation notes for solaris 10), but in general it's "in there", you just have to learn how to find it
it takes some getting used to regarding where things live in oracle docs, but there are cross references
there is "see also"
and tahiti.oracle.com might be of some use if you haven't tried it
and regarding the installation procedure, oracle wants to live in its own little area of the disk, and this structure will be similar on every platform it's installed on, so to that end it's consistent across platforms, even if on any given platform it might be a bit unorthodox
PaulFertser
boingolov: do you know of any other common convention when include files are not in /usr/include and so on? Isn't it a standard across all unicies?
boingolov
PaulFertser, /usr/include is meant for things that ship with the OS and nothing else
PaulFertser
boingolov: and thanks again for the catalog hint. I now see it's obvious. Unfortunately i didn't check that step myself, and my friend somehow missed that...
boingolov
/usr/local/include would be more appropriate for that matter
that said, you only need those headers if you're using proC or the like
PaulFertser
boingolov: yes, for something installed from 3rd-party. But probably oracle could have provided proper packages for all major GNU/Linux distros and other popular OSes.
boingolov
PaulFertser, there are too many steps that must be done manually for a package installer to really make sense. generally packages don't make changes to kernel parameters for instance
the installer they have is bloated and it still irks me that it's gui only, but that said, it kind of needs to have its own custom isntaller
PaulFertser
boingolov: well, that depends, a very common counter-example would be wine.
boingolov
PaulFertser, wine is nothing compared to the complexity of oracle
PaulFertser
boingolov: it needs tweaking of kernel parameters.
boingolov: gui only, really? Oh my. How is it supposed to be installed on remote servers then?
boingolov
PaulFertser, you do a remote X, either by ssh forwarding etc
or NX
or just plain xdmcp
lots of ways
PaulFertser
boingolov: for that i'd need to have at least xlib and other dependencies installed and i doubt that's common for servers.
boingolov
PaulFertser, it is for oracle servers
if you don't like it, use something else
PaulFertser
boingolov: sure, i'm not here to argue, just wondering why is it so strange comparing to everything else i'm used to.
boingolov
PaulFertser, I often wonder that myself, hah. but it is what it is , and it does what it does very well
PaulFertser
boingolov: and 100M for an uninstall utility can't be justified by anything imho. Any kernel hacker would laugh at that i guess.
;)
boingolov
so you have to take the weird and the bad with the good or look elsewhere. that's kind of how it is with oracle
PaulFertser
boingolov: i see. Thanks a lot again, i very appreciate your help and clarifications.
boingolov
my guess is the gui installers are an artifact of them supporting windows, and not much point in having separate installers for each and every OS, so they write one big bloated gui installer in java and use it for everything
a lot of oracle functionality is implemented in java, actually
PaulFertser
boingolov: what's your personal opnion on modern PostgreSQL?
boingolov
I like postgresql
it's my favorite of the free rdbms'es
though mysql has gotten a lot better of late
PaulFertser
Yeah, the 5th version was a breakthrough in mysql world :)
boingolov: can you imagine nobody among the applied math and IT students at my loosy university can prove the retrograde teacher that using postgresql or mysql5 instead of oracle for their primitive course work is ok and in fact should be appreciated...
(Action) wants another world to live in
Ahroun
Is there a way in Oracle to dynamically create a list of, oh, say, integers, from X to Y? For example, SELECT my_id, my_data FROM table_my RIGHT JOIN <somecode here that generates a list from X to Y> temp1 WHERE my_id IN temp1 ?
In this case, my_id might be {101, 103, 104, 107} and I want rows out to be ( 104, data_104 ) (105, null) (106, null), (108, data_108)
boingolov
Ahroun, you could use a table function
Ahroun
boingolov: I'm looking at some documentation right now about using a temporary table sub-select, via a stored proceedure to populate it. I was kinda hoping there's a more elegant solution.
