do i need to add constraint to a column that i had already defined as Primary Key
Dormir
if you have it defined as a PK, that is a constraint
TheBonsai
Dormir: i'll souble check the proper settings. it makes no sense for me, since i can't imagine anything in the environment that causes this error
*double
CBro2007
guys I just downloaded the Oracle 11g docs from their website.. how do I make sense of all these cryptic folders
:)
DiscordianUK
I suggest reading the docs
(Action) ducks
CBro2007
:)
yeah I would love to.. if I can find them that is
TheBonsai
no index.html to click on?
CBro2007
like I said I downloaded the zip file and it unzipped me this whole load of crap
can I not get them in PDF format?
like they used to be in the past
Developers Guide
DBA guide
etc
or is this like a new thing?
TheBonsai
(Action) gets the zip to see

DiscordianUK
E11882-01.zip?
CBro2007
one sec lemme check
sorry renamed the file
lemme check on their site
DiscordianUK
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/homepage has various manuals in PDF format
CBro2007
hm I am wondering where I saw that link
one se
sec
TheBonsai
the zip contains html + pdf
and a index.html
so.. what?
DiscordianUK
I'm lost then as to what CBro2007 's problem is
CBro2007
oh sorry I see the index.html now
in the folders
I was just browsing through the folders
and the names didn't make sense to me at all
DiscordianUK
man find is your friend
CBro2007
its more like offline browsing of that site
I prefer just a collection of PDF documents
anyway thats cool
for creating a bunch of users the manual suggests using the Emctl
isn't there a manual way of doing it too with the CREATE USER?
DiscordianUK
yes
TheBonsai
CBro2007: yea, the zip seems to be a copy of the website
of course there's a CREATE USER. or what do you think EM does? ;-)
CBro2007
so for creation of users etc I would be looking at the DBA guide?
I know it does that behind the scenes
:)
TheBonsai
SQL reference maybe, too
CBro2007
But I just prefer typing out these commands directly in sqlplus
TheBonsai
same here
CBro2007
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10897/users_secure.htm#CHDDCIGA
this is what I see in the docs
TheBonsai
this is not the SQL reference
CBro2007
ok will check the command in the SQL ref
TheBonsai
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10592/statements_8003.htm#SQLRF01503
CBro2007
got it
yeah found that .. cool thanks TheBonsai
ah much better
also I am wondering about this other bit
I want to create a new user called say DEV
would I have to create a service so dev can connect to the DB

TheBonsai
you have a service, hopefully
CBro2007
in my tnsnames.ora
TheBonsai
at least an instance ID to connect to
CBro2007
yeah I do
TheBonsai
lsnrctl services
you can add more services, of course. these can be used internally for a number of things (like limiting ressources and so)
CBro2007
yep I see my service listed there
next I basically want to have PL/SQL developer installed
the thing is I installed Oracle 11g R2 on my Fedora VM on my Mac
so have no Windows at all
so will have to use Wine for installing PL/SQL developer on the Fedora VM
would I need to install Oracle Client on my VM? or because its on the same machine as the Oracle server install it should be ok yeah?
TheBonsai
the database package has a client
CBro2007
thats what I thought
TheBonsai
is "SQL developer" something else than "PL/SQL developer"?
CBro2007
so if I installed PL/SQL developer on this machine I should be ok
yeah it is
TheBonsai
ah k
Discordian
If it works under wine
CBro2007
I am not talking about Oracle SQL developer
PL/SQL developer tool by Automation
thats the bomb
:)
TheBonsai
cause sql dev is a java hack, it should run "everywhere" (with the usual java exceptions...)
CBro2007
hmm yeah I know
but its kinda sucky in comparison to PL/SQL developer.. I am more familiar with that tool too
TheBonsai
well, i'm not a developer
i'm quite happy with sqlplus & sqldev :)
CBro2007
DiscordianUK: yeah heard it works under wine
Discordian
Good luck then
CBro2007
different horses for different courses
:)
no problemo .. will give that a shot
TheBonsai
(Action) copies back his exports to the local disk and promises he will kill the application guys on monday...
1.7T export files
*shakes head*
DiscordianUK
Uggh
That's not fun
TheBonsai
no. i replaced the mass storage subsystem, it could be "fast", but still... :(
the "plan b coldbackup" i made took 10h
DiscordianUK
Ouch
TheBonsai
new backups will be faster *smaks 11g*
your twin?
:D
Discordian
Crappy wifi connection here
CBro2007
I just downloaded and installed PL/SQL developer on the mac
using crossover
wondering whether I should get the "Instant Client for windows" or macosx?
or the full client version
what do you guys suggest?
DiscordianUK
I do not know
I don't use either Windows or OS X
CBro2007
hmm
would it be better to get the full client? or instant client should do?
I think the one for windows might be a safer bet maybe
TheBonsai
depends on what you want to do
the full client has the tools and stuff
exp/imp and so
sqlplus
etc
CBro2007
ok
yeah I would need to be able to say load in an external file into the DB
using External table construct in the code
I want to install the client seperately on my laptop on the mac... so I can connect to several Oracle servers
rather than installing it only in the one VM
thought its better to get PL/SQL developer working on my macosx somehow
I just forget what is needed from the client end
once I install the Oracle client... what configuring do I need to do in the client in order for it to talk to the server?
do I have to put in an entry in the tnsnames.ora file or something?
I remember there are a few things required.. is there a doc for this connectivity sort of thing
any ideas? :)
TheBonsai
external table... mh, the file must be accessible by the instance
not the client
you need to do a sqlnet configuration
i.e. sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora
CBro2007
ok any docs for that?
for the 11g client for windows... which Oracle doc should I look under?
I know with the external file I basically place it on the server and then create a DIRECTORY in Oracle to access it
giving it the right privs etc
TheBonsai
and the DIRECTORY must be accessible by the instance
i.e. a path on the server
CBro2007
yeah will give it the correct grants
TheBonsai
i'm not talking about grants
CBro2007
but what doc for the configuring client?
then what?
TheBonsai
i said it must be a directory in the server's filesystem
CBro2007
which is what I said too
place it on the server
TheBonsai
no idea for oracle client on windows. i guess it's not much different to any other client package
CBro2007
yeah true shouldn't be
but does it tell me how I can configure it
TheBonsai
the usual suspects (in case you don't use easy connect ids)
sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora
CBro2007
hmm yeah but the problem is what the entries must look like
:)
I will do some googling around now
TheBonsai
compare it to DNS, at least the naming stuff
sqlnet.ora =~ resolv.conf
tnsnames.ora =~ hosts
http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Sqlnet.ora
http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Tnsnames.ora
Dormir: btw, i just checked, the spfiles they use are the same. it must be the environment (or something i don't know that influences this)
*scratches beard*
yeags
heya
i have an 11g instance that someone has configured tracing on, it is generating a lot of trace files in oracle/diag/rdbms/database/database/trace
yet I cannot find where the trace is configured so I can remove it
i've tried adrci, but this seems to only display information, not allow me to configure the traces themselves
what is the easiest way for me to diagnose where these traces may be configured?
my init.ora contains no trace config
restarting services don't have any effect
sqlnet.ora and other network/admin files contain no configuration for tracing
i can't figure out where this has been setup
DBMS_MONITOR doesn't seem to have a way to list all traces either
anyone awake?
hi mike
hi ezal
ezal
hi
yeags
i've got a problem trying to find where a trace is configured in an 11g instance
it is generating a lot of trace files in oracle/diag/rdbms/database/database/trace
yet I cannot find where the trace is configured so I can remove it
i've tried adrci, but this seems to only display information, not allow me to configure the traces themselves
you any idea where I might look for where this trace is configured?
init.ora has nothing, none of the network/admin files contain tracing info
DBMS_MONITOR doesn't seem to have a way to list all traces either
i'm a bit lost
ezal
you should try to query UDUMP (user dump destination) paramterer
yeags
ah ha
a show parameter trace returns
trace_enabled boolean TRUE
it would seem if I disable that parameter, it should stop tracing
and a "alter system set trace_enabled=false;" seems to have solved the problem
do you know if the alter system commands are permanent?
bah
now my enterprise manager server.xml file is blank
no idea what happened ther
oh well, time to sleeo

Does oracle run better on a 64bit or 32bit OS?
Hi I am looking for some advice/pointers for upgrading an 10g2 database to 11g1
