DiscordianUK: can I get some help buddy?
I just completed the oracle install and created a new DB
DiscordianUK
Right and?
CBro2007_
am trying to startup the db instance
it says there is something already running
I just want to try and startup and shutdown the thing completely
one sec
DiscordianUK
Is there? ps -aef|grep ora
CBro2007_
will show you the commands
DiscordianUK
what do you see?
CBro2007_
just the java server
DiscordianUK
login as the oracle user

CBro2007_
ok
DiscordianUK
sqlplus / as sysdba
CBro2007_
i am
DiscordianUK
> shtdown
>shutdown
even
CBro2007_
connected to an idle instance now
DiscordianUK
> startup
CBro2007_
ora: 01034 : ORACLE not available
I think I managed to shut it down last time
I am trying to use the dbstart command
lemme paste it on some pastebin
will be easier for you to see whats going on
DiscordianUK
Hmmm this is on which Linux?
CBro2007_
Fedora 11
DiscordianUK
Okay
CBro2007_
www.pastie.org/749361
thats kind of a dump of the tinkering I was doing so far
what I wanted to do was to get the dbstart command to work
following this --> http://staff.in2.hr/denis/oracle/11gr2install_fedora11_en.html
section 4.4 is what I wanted to achieve
DiscordianUK: you see the part when I run the dbstart command... I suppose right after dbca .. its already got the DB running
so I can see why it barfs there
DiscordianUK
Hmmmm perhaps
is your ORACLE_SID set?
and what's in /etc/oratab
CBro2007_
lemme check
pastie.org/749372
its got my env, my etc/oratab and the oracle .bash_profile
can you spot something crazy? :)
do i need to have a service defined in my tnsnames.ora file?
idle_task
Why the NLS_LANG?
CBro2007_
ok don't need it then
DiscordianUK
Well yes but not for access via sqlplus / as sysdba
CBro2007_
hmm ok
so when I do a dbstart why am I seeing that error
and when I start listener I don't see it mentioning my db's sid and that its listening on it
etc
idle_task
(Action) has never used dbstart...
hali
(Action) neither
DiscordianUK
I do su - oracle
and sqlplus / as sysdba

CBro2007_
ok interesting
so you guys log in as sysdba
and then startup?
when I did that
it says " ORA-01081" cannot start already running ORACLE - shut it down first
hmm actually I see a lot of processes
I think I should stop using dbstart
it seems to start up but gives a lot of errors or warnings I suppose
do you guys use Enterprise Mgr Console?
DiscordianUK
I don't
idle_task
CBro2007_: if you want to debug it, use dbstart -T
dbstart is just a shell script
CBro2007_
ok
idle_task
A long and complicated one, but just a shell script
CBro2007_
but I think the sqlplus / as sysdba works fine
and then I issue a startup
it works
just wanted to see the enterprise console
DiscordianUK
But hali has much more serious experience than I do
idle_task
You need to emctl start dbconsole for that
CBro2007_
k
oh yeah I remember him helping me a bit sometime back
I have the dbconsole running
but whenever I go the URL in Firefox: "
hmm weird
anyone have this happen to them before
?
idle_task
Not me
Are you sure about the URL?
CBro2007_
not really
:)
but I would think localhost should work yeah?
I mean I can ping it fine
idle_task
Of course you can ping localhost
The opposite would be worrisome
But since Oracle runs in a VM, it has its own IP I guess
Therefore it is not localhost anymore
(unless you run X in your VM)
CBro2007_
ah I see
is there a way to find out what this IP could be?
idle_task
ip addr
Or ifconfig
(Action) ditches out ifconfig in favor of the ip command
CBro2007_
nah same problem
Xgc
CBro2007_: What browser are you using?
CBro2007_
aha fixed it
had to be https
and I got it from the "emctl status dbconsole" command
showed me the URL there :)
idle_task
Yes it is https
Curious that http didn't redirect to it
CBro2007_
aha
http didn't work for me
i tried
so anyway this stuff works now
idle_task
Well, it should have sent back a 301 imho
CBro2007_
how do you guys start Oracle when you boot up the server?
as a service?
idle_task
Yes
CBro2007_
ah
idle_task
Using, well, $OH/bin/dbstart here
CBro2007_
in that init.d
idle_task
So it looks like it can work
But then that's 10g
Haven't tried that with 11g yet
CBro2007_
hmm so you use dbstart?
http://staff.in2.hr/denis/oracle/11gr2install_fedora11_en.html
check how he does it in the very end
is that correct?
I suppose there are many ways to do this... but is it elegant enough ? :)
idle_task
Erm
You did adapt that script, did you?
DiscordianUK
Step 4.6 is the Fedora way
CBro2007_
whats the RHEL/CentOS way?
idle_task
The same
But look at the script
Look at the oracle home
CBro2007_
he mentions in his installation guide that his stuf is from 10g
idle_task
Yes it is
Did you adapt it?
(and why on earth does he export DISPLAY? I don't need that)
CBro2007_
nope not yet
I am about to modify it so that Oracle can startup when I boot Fedora
you reckon that script is ok or kinda sucky?
is there a more standard script out there that you guys recommend I use?
idle_task
http://dpaste.com/135197/ <-- that's mine
And I don't think there really is a standard
I just pick up an init script and adapt
CBro2007_
ah cool
lemme check it out
it looks good on first sights
:)
whats ORACLE_CFG?
and LSNR_CFG
don't think I need those yeah?
idle_task
Environment files of mine
No, but you need the environment variables then
CBro2007_
do I?
idle_task
I exported the configuration to these files instead of .bashrc because other users on the system needs them
CBro2007_
ORACLE_CFG and LSNR_CFG?
\
idle_task
No you don't
CBro2007_
yeah coz I use this instance only for myself
though I want to be able to connect to my instance from a client
idle_task
You can just put the needed variables instead of lines 16-34
CBro2007_
like do some dev work on this instance
idle_task
Well, you don't need these variables for that, they're only for the server side
Now that I look at this script again, it has some defects as well
CBro2007_
the thing is most of the variables I need are already being exported in the .bash_profile
like?
idle_task
CBro2007_: but the init script won't see them
Unless you source /home/oracle/.bashrc in it
And you should use .bashrc btw, not .bash_profile
CBro2007_
hmm
why is that?
idle_task
Because .bash_profile won't be sourced if you just su, you have to use su -
You can su and not want to open a new session
su doesn't source .bash_profile, only su - does
CBro2007_
k
ok let me chuck the variables in .bashrc
one sec
idle_task
Is there an environment variable to relocate the ADR?
It being in $OB/diag just doesn't fit me, and I'd like to avoid a symlink...
CBro2007_
sorry?
was that for me?
idle_task
It was to anyone who may have an answer :p
CBro2007_
so with your script... can I just get rid of lines 16-34 and keep all the rest and it should work fine?
so I can fit it in with the rest of the instructions on the page I am following and it should be ok
or am I missing something more?
idle_task
(Well, answer to self: there is, I should read the doc further)
CBro2007_: no, replace lines 16-34 with the necessary variables
CBro2007_
hmm but i was thinking that those variables are already in .bashrc
do i need to repeat them in here?
idle_task
Yes, but the init script won't know about them at boot time!
CBro2007_
ah ok I see
so in your ORACLE_CFG file you load in all these variables?
idle_task
You don't do service oracle start as user oracle - you can't do so anyway, since the oracle user cannot write in /var/lock/subsys
Yes
CBro2007_
ah I get it now
13 14 needed?
source fn library
idle_task
And I also load this same file from the oracle user's .bashrc
Yes, this one is absolutely necessary
CBro2007_
k
idle_task
It is the core of SysVinit
