I'm running dbua to go from 11gr1 -> 11gr2 , which dbua reports proper binary in new oracle home, but when I run dbua I get a message saying this will upgrade to 11gr1
this makes no sense. is this a typo in the solaris version?
see something in metalink about a nonstandard glogin.sql but that does not apply here
Mainstay
whats the best method for querying segments of a result set for pagination purposes?
boingolov
when doing a dbua, do I have to create a new database for the target oracle_home?
weird...
the 11gr2 installer didn't seem to install 11gr2 for solaris
maybe I'm going insane
yes boingolov, you're going insane
anyone running 11gr2 on sparc64 yet?
KWhat_Mobile
can you use sqlplus to connect to a remote server?
boingolov
KWhat_Mobile, of course
KWhat_Mobile
haveing a hard time getting it to work. I have something like sqlplus accnt/passwd@//ip.addr:1521/hoststring
doesnt seem to work
boingolov
KWhat_Mobile, I use a tnsnames.ora file
generally the easiest way to do it
KWhat_Mobile
k
where do i find that file my locate database is out of date
boingolov
KWhat_Mobile, oracle will look for the tnsnames.ora file in either the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin dir or in the $TNS_ADMIN dir

KWhat_Mobile
something like this http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Tnsnames.ora#Text_editor , boingolov ?
boingolov
yeah
KWhat_Mobile, are you using the instant client install or the full client?
or are you running sqlplus from a db server box?
KWhat_Mobile
instant
boingolov
in the case of instant, the way it usually installs (at least on *nix) is that you don't have an $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin, so the quickest way to set it up is just to point $TNSADMIN to the instant client install dir
or really any arbitrary directory and put a tnsnames.ora file in it
KWhat_Mobile
is that file case sensive to lcase or ucase boingolov
HAHA it works!
thanks boingolov
albert_kam
hello, if i would like to do a fully-working-app demo to a client from a notebook, and the app is using oracle, how can i easily achieve this without installing oracle on the notebook ? perhaps using virtualization ? i just wonder if it's possible for a 'portable' version which can be easily moved around when doing demo at remote places.
boingolov
albert_kam, oracle can install under a vm, I have i on my laptop set up this way. about to probably redo it though since they now have oracle running on mac osx intel bare metal
but if you want to be able to copy the working oracle instance to different laptops etc, vm's pretty handy
albert_kam
boingolov: thanks for the response. may i know what vm you're using .. ? and whether there's an online article tutorial that could help me getting this done ? i'm new to virtualization, so i'll appreciate any pointers.
boingolov
I was able to get 10gr2 working pretty well under centos with 768mb ram
zomoo
albert_kam virtual machines
boingolov
not running X
albert_kam, I am on a mac, so the vm was created under parallels. I've since migrated to vmware fusion, mainly because we are starting to use some vmware in our production environments (esx)
amit
albert_kam install your os inside an os and install oracle in that OS
if you look down all that would be just a virtual hdd file for the virtual machine
which you can take anywhere and boot up in virtual machine
albert_kam
boingolov: ok, vmware .. thanks for sharing :)
amit: yup, i've seen my friend using virtualbox, allocating resources and then boot another OS from there .. maybe i'll try that :) thanks
corpsicle
is 11.2.0.1.0 the latest JDBC for oracle 11g ?
anyone know anything about why ons.jar isnt a separate download for 11g ?
it is for 10g
according to oracle forums its not in the thin client at all, but only in the full one
or in the "instant client" whatever that is
stede
why the oci_fetch_array-function from php don't return the rows sorted as i do it in the query with ORDER BY statement?
e.g.: http://pgsql.privatepaste.com/e339348247
realHans
hi. A funny colleauge deleted all archive files on my instance. May this cause problems ?
TheBonsai
only if you want to restore a backup + roll forward the database
make a fresh backup
(rolling forward == applying the archived redo logs + redo logs to the restored datafiles from the backup)
realHans
TheBonsai: this means, every datum exists three times: in the database itself, in a redo file and in a archive file ?
TheBonsai
no
forget the archives for a while
and only think about datafiles in terms of meaningless blocks (the object logic is applied on a higher level)
you have a datafile number 5, and in there (due to some action on a higher level) the block 12345 is changed
oracle does that change in the cache memory
problem now: if the instance dies, the change is lost
solution: ALSO note down the change in a journaling file
realHans
ok, the main problem was the hdd run full. I'm going to set the noarchivelog flag ...

TheBonsai
result: datafile + journaling file == the whole change
for normal crashes, noarchive will be okay, but
you can't roll forward from a backup
and you need to do cold backups (or complicate hot backups which probably are inconsistent)
realHans
the instance is only for developing, so there is no big savety necessary ...
Thank you for the infos ! :)
nirupama
from where can I download siebel interactivity framework, webclient automation component and siebel GANTT chart for firefox browser
anybody avilable here
mator
nirupama, i think asking google would be a good idea
nirupama
aren't those tools of oracle
mator
no idea, but somehow I'm never knew about this names before
except of a firefox
stede
it is possible, that oci_fetch_array from a php-source-code don't return the rows in correct order? because the rows are not in the order i expected from the query with ORDER BY statement
the sql-developer crashes very often oO
corpsicle
hey guys
how do i install the "full" client for oracle 11g ?
theres no separate download
mator
corpsicle, what is "full client version" ?
corpsicle
im not sure
not the thin client
theres a separate download for the jdbc thin client
but in 11g theres no ons.jar in that
for some reason
and the only way to get ons.jar is to install the full thick client it seems
or so the oracle forums say anyway
mator
corpsicle, but ons is an Oracle Notification Service, which is a part of server installation?
why would you expect it will be in clients package ?
corpsicle
it is in the client installation
we just found it
it was in the thin client even
hidden in another jar
its used in the client mator
mator
k
corpsicle
its definitely used for RAC, but apparently for normal thin client usage too
mator
JDBC client installation
Franek_Kimono
how are you gentleman!
anyone can help me figure out what can be wrong? -> http://pastebin.com/m542fb635
mator
Franek_Kimono, pastebin somewhere "export | grep -i oracle"
does your tns name pings?
Franek_Kimono
mator: http://pastebin.com/m712027df
mator: tns name ping? how can i check it? i've used only simple db's like mysql/postgresql, oracle is kind of black magic for me
mator
Franek_Kimono, i don't see where ORACLE_SID is defined in your environment variables
do you know what is SID for ?
oracle SID
Franek_Kimono
yes, i know
mator
why you don't define it then?
Franek_Kimono
is the 'name of the instance', as i understand
uhm, possibly i forgot it. sorry, i'm really a newbie to oracle
mator: i've added this variable, but now i'm encountering other errors
http://pastebin.com/m2dd1cb21
:/
mator
Franek_Kimono, does you have oracle started or not yet ?
Franek_Kimono
mator: it's started, i can use enterprise manager via https
mator
Franek_Kimono, you can't have ORACLE_SID like a pathname
look for a sid name in EM (enterprise manager console) and export it properly
Franek_Kimono
:D
ok, thank you very much for that info. i'm launching ff
hm, where can i find this SID?
aahm
nope, it wasn't THAT simple. i've exported it as 'orcl'
and ain't helping
geez, http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/ORACLE_SID says that it *should* 'orcl' :/
hali
ps -ef | grep pmon usually helps
Franek_Kimono
oracle 25786 1 0 Nov30 ? 00:00:01 ora_pmon_orcl
hali
yep, should be orcl
Franek_Kimono
http://pastebin.com/m73c92ae
:<
same thing, doesn't work and i don't know why
i'm running oracle 11g on oracle enterprise linux
oel doesn't even support gigabyte nic's :/
mator
Franek_Kimono, pastebin somewhere "export | grep -i oracle" after you've set oracle_sid
phimic
hi all
anybody here who uses Oracle-RAC with sles10 sp3?
Franek_Kimono
mator: it's set already
mator: http://pastebin.com/m75a6e014
mator
Franek_Kimono, http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=270668
Franek_Kimono
k, going there
hah, now i've messed up everything :D
mator: everything should be fine, but now i'm getting ORA-00845: MEMORY_TARGET not supported on this system
mator
Franek_Kimono, first link on google for ORA-00845
usn_work
did one of you ever try to patch 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7 on AIX 6.1?
I tried today
TheBonsai
(Action) looks at usn_work
...aaaaaaaannnnddd?
usn_work
I love it. move fuser away, and the patch works
phimic
usn_work: do you use sles10?
usn_work
sometimes
today: no
today it's AIX 6.1
phimic
usn_work: :)
usn_work
y?
TheBonsai
when you ''srvctl add listener'' in 11g2 grid infra, it it normal that the listener is IPC only (doesn't listen on TCP), although the srvctl config listener says it should do TCP? the generated config doesn't contain the proper statements
no showstopper, just smells a bit
usn_work
smells like teen oracle spirit
TheBonsai
yep. a bit :D
usn_work
cool bug, btw. :)
TheBonsai
no idea if it's actually a bug. on a SLES, directly after install+config grid infra, you need some handwork it seems
usn_work
blog them
TheBonsai
soon :D
usn_work
it's good material and important for all of us
TheBonsai
(Action) was about to write ''handjobs'' wtf
usn_work
mh ;)
Doc ID 287428.1 is the best in the world
TheBonsai
is it the uninstall manual?
usn_work
nots, the fuser move stuff
s/nots/no/sorry
TheBonsai
heh
boingolov
man, 11gr2 upgrade takes forever, seems it would have been easier to just do an data pump export of the schemas I wanted to keep and start over from a fresh install
it's also messy
TheBonsai
messy?
boingolov
well, enterprise manager for instance
it bombed, yet I hadn't done any customization of it at all. I really don't use oem
so if it couldn't upgrade OEM on my setup, I can't imagine what would be involved if you actually cared about your config and didn't mind blowing it awway and rebuilding the repository
usn_work
I'm linking 11.1.0.7 to 11.1.0.6 for 20 minutes now - don't complain
s/to/from/1
boingolov
usn_work, that's nothing, heh
what platform btw?
usn_work
AIX 6.1
hali
nice, i just ordered a p520
with 6.1
pretty good bang for buck for EE licensing
usn_work
yes, it's cool stuff
but never try to buy a memory upgrade
you will go off cheaper with a new server
hali
this machine is about 20k, the 32Gb RAM was 10k of that
lpars gives pretty good seperation of test/staging/prod though
usn_work
if you need next 32GB, they will be 25k
had this with 16GB recently: 16k, the server was 22k originally
hali
ibm did reduce the price of memory last week :)
37% on 8gb dimms i think
MIKMAQ
jello
hello?
boingolov
so does ibm use some sort of specialized memory, or are they just being evil?
sun ram isn't exactly cheap, but nothing quite like that
TheBonsai
handmade
by indian children
bit by bit
boingolov
were they crying when they made it?
